Pervez Hoodbhoy December 13, 2006

The problem of Pakistanis is right here in one paragraph of Dr. Hoodbhoy`s long essay. Yeah baby! dish out the leftie-commie schemes of tax the rich schemes.
Professor Hoodbhoy may be great is physics, but unfortunately he is nill in economics and here are the golden quotations.
Dr. Hoodbhoy - First, we need to bring economic justice to Pakistan. This requires that it possess the working machinery of a welfare state.
This ``ill-fair`` welfare state concept is a dirty mixture of made up Islamic history and modern day show-shaw-lism.
Yeah we all heard about Hazrat Umar (rah) making sure that even stray dogs got fed in the evening. Hazrat Umar was able to achieve this based on the immense Maal-e-Ghanimat (war-booty) filling the coffers of Islamic emirates.
Pakistan unfortunately do not have access to the Maal-e-Ghanimat. We instead kill our rich, destroy their industries, and then live off on Bakhsheesh of the Europeans.
Dr. Hoodbhoy - Economic justice is not the same as flinging coins at beggars. Rather, it requires organizational infrastructure that, at the very least, provides employment
Government providing employment is the most misunderstood concept among the commies. They feel government is the big-Moma baring its ``teets`` to every young man in the country. They feel the big-Moma can lay there, and all these little country men can go suck the sustenance out of her.
Time and again this big-Moma theory has failed in Pakistan, and still the likes of Hoodbhoys are parroting the age-old show-shaw-list mantra.
Dr. Hoodbhoy - Incomes should be neither exorbitantly high nor miserably low. To be sure, “high” and “low” are not easily quantifiable, but an inner moral sense informs us
OK so the good doctor hints at the commie concept of state-controlled ``high-low`` big-Moma system. Fortunately he quickly accepts his fallacy but then again relies on show-shaw-list ``inner moral sense`` to ``inform us`` that go out and kill the rich. This is nothing but petty copy of Big-Moma revolutionaries aka Fidels, and Chavezes.
Dr. Hoodbhoy - that something is desperately wrong when rich Pakistanis fly off to vacation in Dubai while a mother commits suicide because she cannot feed her children.
Funny that our professor is so good in Physics research, but then quickly throws out all the concepts of surveying and research when it comes to the economy. Does this good doctor care to quote how many Pakistani families are flying off to Dubai for vacations? and then how many ``mothers`` are committing suicides because ``they cannot feed her children``.
Sad indeed that Dr. Hoodbhoy has thrown caution to the winds, and dumped all his practice of research straight down the drain.

All of you guys are wrong. Only that dear boy Yasser Latif Hamdani is correct.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with Pakistanis or indeed, for that matter, with Muslims. Before the casteist racist pig Gandhi brought in religiosity into politics, Muslims were the most advanced people in the subcontinent, if not in the entire world, who were peace-loving, progressive in their outlook, prosperous, creative, inquisitive with a scientific bent, tolerant and anything else you could wish in a modern human being. It took just one man, the casteist racist pig Gandhi, to convert such an advanced civilization into today`s heap of human misery in both Pakistan and India. But for the casteist racist pig Gandhi, the subcontinent`s Muslims would be monopolizing the Nobel Prizes from 1947 onwards to the total exclusion of the hated Jews who would be begging for mercy from the Ummah and of course the subcontinent`s Muslims, true to their heritage, would have been generous toward them.
The casteist racist pig Gandhi caused Pakistan to pass the Hudood Ordinances. The casteist racist pig Gandhi caused the Pak army to overthrow the elected governments. The casteist racist pig Gandhi sowed the seeds of secession in the black hearts of the East Bengalis whose women volunteered ``comfort duty`` for visiting Pak soldiers. The casteist racist pig Gandhi has even caused the Pak army to kill civilians in Balochistan. In fact, it is the lingering influence of the casteist racist pig Gandhi that got Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, the greatest patriot Pakistan has known, hanged. In fact, Yasser Latif Hamdani wouldn`t be surprised if DNA tests establish that Gen. Zia ul-Haq was fathered by the casteist racist pig Gandhi through one of his nieces.
Casteist racist pig Gandhi murdabad!
Pakistan Paindabad!

Pak GDP falls to 6.6pc from 7.8pc: WB
By our correspondent
ISLAMABAD: The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in South Asia is estimated to have expanded at a very rapid pace of 8.2 per cent in 2006.
India led the way with its GDP growing by an estimated 8.7 per cent, backed by non-agricultural growth in excess of 10 per cent. The output in Pakistan is estimated to have slowed from 7.8 to 6.6 per cent, following a return to more normal agricultural production in the wake of a bumper harvest in 2005, says the World Bank in its report titled ‘Global Economic Prospects 2007: Managing the Next Wave of Globalisation’.

TaikoNUT,
U seem to be an omniscient???
OK. As for welfare state, he`s not wrong. If that`s the case then Jinnah was wrong coz Jinnah wanted Pakistan to be welfare state.
As for people flying-off to Dubai and ignoring the dying mothers. Is it an irrational concern? I dont think so.
In Europe the ordinary people contribute small amounts for care agencies who in turn channelise money for better causes like helping the homeless, destitutes, orphans, diseased and many more welfare causes. If we look at our societies we dont have that kind of network of social service organisations. Infact charity is a multi-million £ public activity in UK atleast. I guess similar chairty activity happens in all the developed western countries. Collectively India and Pakistan are failures on this count.(People can jump-in and say abt Zakat but western charity networks and desi Zakat networks are qualitatively world apart).
Dr. Hoodbhoy`s concerns on economic issues are learned opinions than show-shaw-listic (in ur lingo) mumbo-jumbo.

Dr. Hoodbhoy,
I forgot to commend you on your making a sincere effort of trying to start the ``educated`` people of Pakistan BEGIN TO see reason - albeit in small dosages!
Good luck to you!

Pakistan is a decent place if you have the connections and are willing to use them. Being a failed state, Pakistan`s institutional vaccum is filled with figures and power structures that can only see force as the ways and means to an end. In such conditions, creativity, discussions, and most of all, a sense of civic responsibility is forcefully discouraged. Primarily because allowing such will intefere with the functioning of the power structure that holds the constitution and rules of law in gross contempt. This is a vicious cycle which has strategically eliminated most elements of Pakistani society from wanting to participate in creating a nation.
We see a repetition of the 60`s in todays Pakistan where many actually believe the boom times are evidence of emerging success. The 60`s were a far superior time in terms of how far and fast Pakistan was economically progressing, yet the country hit a dead end. The lack of civic responsibility and active participation in politics for a variety of genuine reasons gives evidence to the rulers - much like it did to the Basic Democrats of the 60`s that the people are swimming in economic bliss. Much like the 60`s we`ll end up at a dead end.
What is boggles the mind is that these rulers and their supporters want us to believe that Pakistan can be `re-imagined` (if I may use the good profs words) without any land reforms, without institutional reforms, without a standardized quality education system. The evidence against their flawed logic is striking. Being an agri-economy, the area offers a good example. Pakistani section of the Punjab (West) was irrigated by the Brits to be the place to grow crops while East Punjab was meant for services and small industry etc. Today, East Punjab`s crop yields are, according to some quotes, five times those of West Punjab. Granted there are many benefits farmers in the East extract from their state, but the huge discrepancy reflects the unreformed, neglected and broken down systems in Pakistan.
There are no substitutes for rule of law and independent institutions. Ayub thought there were, Musharaf believes there are. These insincere rulers continue to fuk up a nation for self-glory. These rulers exist at the expense of Pakistan.
But, as they say, let the good times roll...

Hoodbhoy will always remain a one-trick-pony: Pakistan cannot
be, all that it can be, while most of it`s citizens continue to practice
Islam. We cannot progress socially, economically and culturally
unless we adopt the ``Don`t Ask, Don`t Tell`` policy on religion. It`s
the religion, stupid.
He makes the most common mistake of nerds and geeks, when
they come to the west. They assign a causal relationship to the
seperation of church and progress of the state. If these morons
had studied the Quran and history of early Islam, as closely as
their textbooks, they would know that Islam is the most engaging,
tolerant and progressive of lifestyles which encourages science
and research.
Whenever Hoodbhoy has participated on a panel with Islamic
scholars and found wanting, he has been quick to affirm his
ignorance of Islam. For a man who spends so much time trashing
it, you would expect him to get acquainted with the subject first.
With time, as his repeated claims, cautions and prophecies
have come to naught and his judgment stands exposed, he
withers on the vine and will ultimately fade into nothingness
--just like his career in Physics.

Re#114:
There is a striking similarity with the former-Pakistan of 1960s. Musharraf is really Ayub the Second. The recursive exploitative nature of establishment that is sucking the rump state as if no tomorrow is bound to blow up once again in their faces like 1971. With the accumulation of legal precedences justifying all sorts of coup on the civic society, my hope is to see the rump-state break apart (completely this time).
May one day, the glorious rivers of punjab and sindh turn red with the blood of faujis and their minions.

Observation: good
Analysis: dumb
Conclusion : Dead Wrong
Ayub figured out that being part of the CETO, CENTO, RCD will help Pakistan. And it did. Pakistan enjoyed enormous growth in his period. You ask an ordinary Pakistani (who had lived through his time), that Ayub`s period was the best for the region in the post-1947 era.
BTW Hindia while signing ``friendship treaties`` with the West, is doing exactly the same what Ayub did in the 1950s.
Hindia learned about outsourcing office services from America in the 1990s.
Ayub got the outsourcing of defense services from America in the 1950s.
So say Salaam to the guy who was 40 years ahead of any major Hindian leader.

In Ayub`s time, E. Pakistan got 46% compared to W. Pak budget.
Now BDesh revenue is 28% ($5 billion) compared to Pakistan ($18 billion).
In Ayub`s time, E. Pak had ``zero`` obligation buried in its budget.
Now BDesh has $3billion deficit in its $8billion in the budget.
40 odd years of post-Ayub period means drop of full 18% in the money flow for E. Bengal. Still Commies love to throw $hite on their benefactor. Such is the close mindedness of the commies.
What a shame.

....there are two things i cannot figure out........actually there are quite a few, but at the moment two are coming to mind.......
1) how can people be more famous outside there profession than in their profession
2) is it necessary to follow everything Jinnah said
..........i am a strong believer that a person should, first and foremost, achieve something in their profession of choice and the move onto other areas......i am always a bit cautious of individuals who are known more for activities that have nothing to do with their profession.......noam chomsky is a world authority in his profession...........and now he is known for his activism.......that is the correct sequence.........
.........secondly, one should never be famous just for talking or being opinionated.......anyone can do that..........the easiest way to do so is to become anti-``something``...........anti-religion, anti-secularism, anti-Pakistan, anti-India, anti-men, anti-women etc.............there will always be a group of, ``anti`` individuals who will be looking for someone to articulate their, ``anti`` views, and will hail anyone who can present their anti view eloquently, as the true messiah...........
..........much better to actually achieve something solid and be known for it, then to be known for opinions.........the problem is that it is easy to have opinions, but difficult to achieve something solid..........
2) ...........now to Jinnah..........the guy did whatever he could...........moreso than any leader in south asia....india would have come into existence, even if there had been no nehurs, gandhis, patels etc.........however, there would have been no pakistan, without Jinnah.........i think, he must be exhausted and it is time to let him rest......
.........it is, thus, pointless, to try to follow everything he said........time to move on........Pakistan need not be Jinnah`s Pakistan.......it should be the Pakistan of the people who live there.........and if their views contradict Jinnah`s then it is their views that should take precedence..........
for those who don`t believe me, Jinnah said the following also, ``Pakistan must build up her Air Force as quickly as possible, it must be an efficient Air Force, second to none.`` .........now should Pakistan spend over $400 billion to make its air force better than the US air force, which has a budget of over $400..........if Pakistan should do everything Jinnah says, then the answer is yes...........otherwise no...........
........Hoodbhoy is an opinionated man..........that is his right........however, that is neither anything to hail him as a leader nor anything to declare him an idiot.........in my opinion, he is comments indicate an average individual, with strong views (who happened to get a Ph.D. from MIT)........that is about the category that all of us on Chowk fit into (without the Ph.D.)
............and Jinnah is dead...........i doubt he is going to wake up again..........so it is time to stop quoting him and to move on...........

More responses...
a clarification of 124... I feel neither Hoodbhoy nor Chowk staff understand that the two things can be compatible...
Furthermore... those who are speaking of academic credentials... merely googling and coming up with the good professor`s ``papers`` (tell me one PhD who doesn`t have ``papers``) is not enough of an answer to my question....
My question has been very simple... will Hoodbhoy be remembered for ground breaking work in Physics or his rootless political activism well intentioned as it may be? Please produce the groundbreaking work in the field of Physics that Hoodbhoy produced...
For example... the firm believer in Faith Unity and Discipline (Yaqeen-e-Muhkam, Itihad aur Tanzeem) .... Dr. Abdus Salam has the following
... SU(4) × SU(2)L× SU(2)R or ( SU(4) × SU(2)L× SU(2)R ) / Z2 (The Grand Unification Theory i.e. Patty Salam Model)
Lest I mention the electro-weak... forget it.
To quote Salam...
``Thou seest not, in the creation of the All-merciful any imperfection, Return thy gaze, seest thou any fissure. Then Return thy gaze, again and again. Thy gaze, Comes back to thee dazzled, aweary.``
This in effect is, the faith of all physicists; the deeper we seek, the more is our wonder excited, the more is the dazzlement for our gaze.``
Thus ... one could say the whole thing was Unity Faith and Discipline....
