Vaccination row brewing in Britain
By Rauf Klasra
LONDON: A new controversy has surfaced in the United Kingdom after a top Muslim doctor urged the Muslims not to vaccinate their children against diseases such as measles, mumps and rubella because these contained Haram ingredients.
It is feared here that the fresh controversy now even in life-saving medicines might put the lives of millions of Muslim children at risk around the globe. A report in the British media has claimed that in Pakistan, Nigeria, Afghanistan, and parts of India, Muslims have refused to be immunised against polio after being told that the vaccines contained products that the West has deliberately added to make the recipients infertile.
The warning from Dr Abdul Majid Katme, a psychiatrist, who has worked in the National Health Service for 15 years, has been criticised by the Health Department and the British Medical Association, saying that Dr Katme risked increasing infections ranging from flu and measles to polio and diphtheria in Muslim communities.
Dr Katme, the head of the Islamic Medical Association, is now telling Muslims that almost all the vaccines contain products derived from animal and human tissues, which make them “Haram”. He said Islam permits only the consumption of Halal products, where the animal is slaughtered in Islamic manner. Dr Katme has asked Muslims not to vaccinate their children with vaccines being produced in the West as they do not meet the Islamic criteria. Katme says some of the vaccines have been made using pork-based gelatine.
Moderate Muslims are concerned over the potential impact because other Muslim doctors will have to confirm vaccines are derived from animal and human products. A report said that there is already evidence of lower than average vaccination rates in the Muslim areas, reducing the prospect of the “herd immunity” needed to curb infectious diseases such as measles, mumps and rubella.
Dr Katme said he was bringing the message to Britain after analysing the products used for the manufacture of the vaccines. He claimed that Muslims must allow their children to develop their own immune system naturally rather than rely on vaccines.
He argued that leading “healthy lives according to Islam” would be enough to ward off illnesses and diseases. “You see, God created us perfect and with a very strong defence system. If you breastfeed your child for two years — as the Holy Qur’aan says — and you eat Qu’aanic food like olives and black seed, and you do ablution each time you pray, then you will have a strong defence system,” he said.
He claimed that many vaccines, especially those administered to children, are full of Haram substances — human parts, gelatine from pork, alcohol, animal/monkey parts, all coming from the West, which doesn’t have the knowledge of Halal or Haram. It is forbidden in Islam to consume any of these Haram substances, he argued.
Dr Katme singled out vaccines such as MMR as ones to avoid, despite doctors, saying these are essential to keep a baby healthy. Others included those for diphtheria, tetanus, acellular pertussis and meningitis.
Dr Shuja Shafi, a spokesman for the Health and Medical Committee of the Muslim Council of Britain, said: “In terms of ingredients in vaccines, there are so many things that are probably Haram, but in the absence of an alternative we are allowed to take it for the sake of our health.”

Please, refrain from using personal remarks for zeemax. I will never call anyone retard or crazy. thanks
Other than that, Yes I do agree with your POV. Not only that I have seen in Pakistan that it is normal routine for all these govt. officials to show up late on work, don`t show up at all with out any leave of absence. And, truts me they are being paid a lot for the laziest services they are giving.
The whole Paki society needs a big revolution . (AAWAAY KAA AAWAA HII BIGRRAA HOOAA HAIY)

don`t listern to zeemax, he is crazy... he has been thru my clinic so many times - i have lost count... :)
this theroy of ``underpaid gov`t worker`` doesn`t hold good in pak or india... because they atleast have a job and a regular paycheck where million others don`t... from that perspactive, the govt workers are being paid very handsomely for the paper-pushing work they do.... so there should do their duties for which they are being paid for from tax payer`s money...
There should be a ``thank you`` session every day morning before work starts where each and every of these gov`t workers should line up and say thank you to the people for their livelihood... anybody missing that session should be ``lightly`` thrashed 5 times... :)

So, You are favouring GUNDA TAX and not only favouring, but, supporting this evil with all your strength @ hand.
Alright, for a moment GUNDA TAX is acceptable. I am willing to pay that with no regret.
GUNDA TAX is easy to be payed by privileged Pakis and they can easily have anything they wish via this gunda tax. Now, come to reality, Who are we favouring here?
We are favouring only 20 % of privileged Pakis by agreeing to pay this GUNDA TAX. So, we`re the part and parcel of this corrupt Paki culture. WoW!!!! Wonderful!!!
What about rest of the 80% of really Poor Less fortunate Pakis? How will they pay this GUNDA TAX?
I am NOT worried about 20% really corrupt Pakis, all I am ranting, raving and feeling is for 80% poors who have to pay bribes or else face harassment in their daily lives..........be it getting a check or passport or license or any kind of normal routine work................so far these 80% poor Pakis are helpless.
And the dilemma is they can only curse the system and do nothing for the eradication of this evil.....................tsk, tsk, tsk...........................each one of those 80% Pakis wonders that there would be ever a time in their life times when they would get rid of this curse and would lead their routine lives lil easier.......................
Corruption has had real deep and dramatic effects on the lives of poor Pakis, they are enslaved by this corrupt culture...........Pakistan has become a hell to live for these poor Pakis who are deprived of even the basic services like electricity , b/c they can`t afford a GUNDA TAX...........................there is no light in their homes, no warmth for their kids and unfortunately no escape from this hell.......................
Corruption has engulfed their daily lives and nobody is willing to eradicate it...................
And even more disturbing aspect is, majority of Pakis have lost their insight , have given up to raise voice for their basic rights.
They have silently accepted the corruption as the part of their normal culture. For them corruption is normalcy. They don`t defend or they don`t get offended by such corruptions.
Individual corruption has had deep impact on general poverty of the poor Paki public. They have lost their self esteem, their sense of fairness, their bravery, their insight.
Zeemax
As for as helping earthquake victims is , yes I admit Paki citizens have shown a great solidarity in those times of need for those victims, but, why only those times?
Isn`t this kind of solidarity needed for every aspect of Paki society?
Why Pakis are unable to eradicate CORRUPTION from their society which is the MOTHER CANCER, and everything else is CHILD CANCER.....................IF ONLY WE CAN realise and feel with our SENSITIVE SIDES........................................thanks

Fielty (my spelling mistake, actually spelt fealty) means giving loyalty as a vassal to a lord. Umar grasped Abu Bakr’s hand in this gesture after the latter made an impassioned speech at the site of Mohammad’s pbuh death. Other muhajirs who were gathered there seeing this as an act of fealty followed suit and soon there after the Ansars did as well. This was an admission of loyalty once the leader had been selected.
No formal process of selection took place when Abu Bakr became Caliph.
I did not say nor imply in any way that Abu Bakr was democratically elected. Nobody knew that he was a candidate for the office. They only rushed to him to give him their loyalty once they realized that he had already been appointed. I hope you get it this time.
The only way any discussion about history is possible is if all sides are interested in getting at the truth. I will be very happy to admit my ignorance and learn from you if you have better historical facts. But if the aim is to just score points by trying to side track, using words out of context, then it doesn’t add to your growth or mine – and I am definitely not interested in a pissing contest.
