Arjun dont forget ther eal statics of Indin education
Muslims constitute about nine hundred thousand individuals, or 20 per cent of the total population of the Calcutta Municipal Corporation area, 80 per cent of whom are Urdu speaking. The total number of boys and girls of school going age in this population is estimated to be 140,000.
The total enrolment figure of boys and girls of this linguistic group in all the 27 recognised school which cater to their educational needs did not exceed 14,663. If all the other kinds of institutions are taken into account we find 5,090 children enrolled in madrasas and approximately 15,000 in maktabs. The total number of enrolment does not exceed 35,000. This means that only 11 per cent of the Urdu speaking boys and girls go to school and if enrolment figures in institutions of all kinds are taken into account, not more than 25 per cent of Urdu speaking boys and girls attend some sort of educational institution. In terms of absolute numbers, 105,000 students belonging to the linguistic group do not attend any school, largely due to extreme dearth of educational institutions.
Out of an approximately total number of 600 to 700 schools in Kolkata Municipal Corporation area there are 43 Urdu medium schools (Junior 16, High 21 & Higher Secondary 6). Only 27 of these schools are recognized and the remaining are unrecognized, while one H.S. and two junior schools are run by the state government. These two junior government schools are over a century old but have not been upgraded till now, nor do we know of any such plan for future.
Incidentally intensive survey of a slum in 1997 showed that percentage of illiteracy was higher than what it had been on the eve of independence in 1947. This is an index of the downward mobility of the community in the field of literacy and much more in the field of education.

anil,
........ i do not have any delusions about the `altruistic` instincts of the bania, but i have faith in his instinct for making a buck .......... a number of paki institutions are willing to pay top dollar to qualified faculty (not masadi) and someone said there is a surplus of phd`s in india - so it thought it is a win/win situation ......... and regardless of the odd suicide bombing, lahore and islamabad are much better places to live than delhi and kolkata

Sir, you have an exaggerated opinion of the altruistic instincts of your neighbors across the borders. Why, pray why, would the eminently qualified of the land of Jai Jawan - Jai Kisaan would risk their necks to go the path of the Perl when they can make good money right inside India and stay physically safe at the same time?
Just imagine - (1) getting a visa from the Pakistani government agents who have perfected the art of beating up even the Indian diplomats to pulp form, (2) crossing the border, looking back and wondering if you are seening the motherland for the last time, (3) walking past those jihadi donation boxes on the way to the classroom, on a day in and day out basis, (4) looking over your shoulder every minute - wondering which of your students is planning to blow himself/herself in the classromm on that day!
No sir-ree Baab!

It`s a problem with muslims...I`ve read about dozens of muslim marches against Israel, the war on iraq etc etc...I`ve never heard of a muslim march for better education...
regardless, even with indian muslims dragging the overall numbers down, India is ahead of Pakiland...

what makes anyone think pakis actually want to pursue knowledge instead of 72 vigins? Look at brit-pakis...they have access to a good education system, almost free health care etc etc..
And yet they`re way behind in the education game and way ahead in the jihad game..the simple fact is that pakis prefer jihad over java...
Internet Spreading Dangerous Ideology?
The terror raids in Birmingham Wednesday have prompted much anger among the area’s Asian community. But they have also made local mosque leaders question the source of the rise in Islamic fundamentalism among Britain’s young Muslims.
Shabir Hussain, the imam of a mosque near one of the homes stormed by anti-terror police, believes that the dangerous ideology of radical Islam is coming not from a small number of imams sowing anti-western sentiment at secret meetings, but from the Internet.
``The children are not learning from the mosques, not learning from the parents,” he said. “Young kids, they see the news and see the Internet. They think, ‘something`s happening in Iraq, in Afghanistan, in Palestine, in Kashmir, and Muslims are oppressed everywhere and some injustice is happening in the world.’”
The personal — and some might say secretive — nature of Internet use could be creating a sense of paranoia that is being felt inside the homes of British Muslims.
``Something is happening in the house,” Mr Hussain said. “Father is looking at son, `What are you looking at on the Internet? What are you watching on the TV? Where are you going? Who are your friends?’ These kinds of things are already happening.``
A London based producer who monitors daily a range of jihadi Web sites for CBS News, believes there is a host of factors contributing to the groundswell of anger evident among many young Muslims in Britain.
``They`ve lost a sense of belonging. Integration doesn`t work. There`s the recent spate of arrests,” he said.
But it could be the easy access to militant Islamic websites that is increasing and channeling this anger.
CBS News` producer said that young British Muslims are “more politicized than others their age, simply because of their background” and that some seek the unsanitized view of the world offered by the Internet, a view that many feel is lacking in more mainstream news.
``There`s no barrier between the youngsters and what occurs in the world in terms of conflict,`` he said. “You go into a website at random and put in ‘beheading clips’ and you will find them, starting from Daniel Pearl in Pakistan to Ken Bigley in Iraq.”
The alleged plot by the nine terrorist suspects arrested yesterday to kidnap a serving British Muslim soldier, behead him and broadcast the footage on the web is chillingly similar to the media-savvy tactics employed by jihadist groups in Iraq.
The fighters who construct these Islamist websites have even taken to calling themselves ``electronic mujahideen.``
``Every operation they make, there`s a camera filming it and then it`s posted on the Internet,`` the producer said. ``There`s messages from al Qaeda, and now they`re going on Arab satellite channels and American security centers.”

Well actually, being buried, or burnt to a cinder with that awful smell, or thrown into a dirty river to become fish meal, it`s all the same isn`t it?
If death ends all, then why should you care? If you`re scared of being buried alive, you could be burnt alive too .. so the reasoning does not stand. Or do you mean to say some part of you will remain alive while being buried? I don`t really get what you mean.
The best would however be what O`Leary did. Scattered in space. Have you considered that :~)
Or there are the cryogenic chambers .. perhaps someday we`ll be able to wake you up and bring you back to Chowk ... :)

tehsin gadhay,
``By this logic 40 percent of Muslims who are sent to America for higher education should be humanities graduates. You are crazy if you think any of them go back with such degrees``
... oye bewakoof ! ........ we don`t want people with humanities degrees to go back ! ....... remember syed qutub?..... he came to america to get a humanities degree and this is what he learned about you :
`` Jazz is his preferred music, and it is created by Negroes to satisfy their love of noise and to whet their sexual desires ... ``
......... then he went back to join hassan al-banaa`s al-qaeda ......... and if i am not mistaken, hassan turabi, another shining light of al-qaeda, has a phd in law from the sorbonne ......... and let`s not even talk about sir muhammad allama iqbal who studied philosophy in germany and returned to cause more havoc than masadi can ever dream of ..........
............ look, you imbecile, the islamic world is full of scholars who can recite socrates and aristotle backwords - the libraries in qum are reputed to hold every single piece of garbage written by western philosophers and the ayatollahs have read all of them ........ from what i understand, any ayatollah-in-training can run cirles around most philosophy professors at harvard ......... but what has that brought them ?......... as long as they continue to believe in the book, all other knowledge is superfluous ........
...... and stop making nonsensical statements like :``great science graduates like you who went back to their respective Muslim countries, did not bring about a scientific revolution in their societies``......... first of all, in case you didn`t notice, most great science graduates like me do not go back - heck, even mediocre ones like urstruly stick around to work on designing horns for jeeps .......... but the few that do go back keep the lights on (albeit intermittently) , build the motorways, teach at lums and agha khan, work at nespak and descon, and most importantly make atom bums and the missiles to take them to kolkata ........
................and people like dr hoodbhoy risk their life and limb everyday to save one or two young minds a year (mention hoodbhoy`s name to any jamatia in islamabad and you will see what i am talking about - it is a wonder the man is still alive )......... a good friend of mine who gave up a very successful career in industry in the us to go back and teach computer science in pakistan summed it up for me when he said, `` i have accomplished more in the last two years here than i accomplised in fifteen years of research at cray and ibm - i have trained half a dozen brillliant bachas`` ......... of course he was disappointed that he is still unable to save their souls which their parents sold to the devil`s nemesis .......... the faculty at agha khan medical college is another good example - they have raised the standard of medical education to the point where their graduates can simply walk into the best residency programs in the us ...... it might not be a `revolution`, but it sure beats the heck out of what all thiose ma`s in islamiyat, pultical scance, philasaphy and sociolology have accomplised .......... i believe sheikh rashid has an ma in pulitical scance from gordon college !
.......... now get out of the house, read the wsj and the ny times instead of the greenwich time and jewish news, and for god`s sake stop reading socrates - you are getting insufferable ......... i might have to come up there and beat the crap out of you ........... but really, we should stop quibbling amongst ourselves while civilization is threatened by the likes of zeemaz, urstruly, osama, and masadi ...........
