shandana:
You seem to quote the following Indian incident, appraently with approval:
``We also have non political violence, such as the movement by women in the Indian state of Bihar to ‘demolish liquor vends and toddy pots’. Fed up with the constant drunkenness of their menfolk, they beat them, shaved their heads, garlanded them with shoes and paraded them around their villages (BBC news story in 2006) till they vowed to give up alcohol. Their efforts have resulted in swathes of dry land in generally wet India.``
It would seem that the police did not act against these women either since what they did was considered socially acceptable. May I suggest that the same applies to the case of Hafsa Jamia girls. The police did not act against them as they seem to be doing something that has a high ``approval rating`` and the disapproval is limited to the English speaking chattering classes, some of whom may also be patrons of aunty Shamim.

dost-mittar #82: With all due respect, I think the Pakistani ``english speaking chattering classes`` have nevertheless a better understanding of the realities of Pakistan than you do. After all - you seem to confidently assert opinions on Pakistan based on a few days visit - while Pakistanis (chattering and non-chattering types, english-challenged as well as english-not-challenged types) have spent decades there.
You would be on more solid ground providing some insights on India, rather than Pakistan.

shandana #80 great Writings on the Road!! This is truly the irreverant spirit of the average Pakistani (as opposed to the handful of islamist ideologues)!!

Hazoor, you probably did not notice the opening words, ``it would seem``. The basis of the second paragraph is the first paragraph, not my visit to Pakistan. Please read it again.
(btw, even in a few days, I can claim to have seen more of Pakistan than you have - on foot, on buses, on train, in car and by plane -:-).

the point is that vigilantism and force-feeding your idea of a society to others is well and good as long as it is your idea of what is right and wrong. Since, in Pakistan after 60 years the lack of institutions has brought to this: every Pakistani has its own unique idea about Mohammad, Jinnah and Pakistan. It`s like Paki army as the biggest corporate band destroyed the system and now eveyone who knows three chords and strum a guitar is a punk rocker.
Also, notice how hamidm who was very recently throwing hissy fits on kashmir and how ``tribals`` wouldn`t go and focus on kashmir militancy is now again doing his best in hissy-fitting on taliban and jamia hafsa girl brigade.
When Taliban was commiting a massaacre of Shia Afghanis in Mazar Sharif, enforcing hardcore-Hafsa-brigade variety of Islam on Afghanis and doing other nasty things with the total support of peeps sitting in the neighborhood of Laal Masjid (ISI), it was all Afghan`s fault. Now, when talibani islam comes and disrupts the party in Islamabad, somehow, it is wrong.

First of all I find the title of this article absurd and ridiculous.By using the word``wild`` for those respectable and brave ladies show that we ourselves are ``gone wild`` that we have lost the vision to see the difference between right and wrong. We call ourselves civilized on what basis? We act like self righteous all the times while ignoring all the worst corruptions and immoralities happening in our native land, called Pakistan.
This title shows extreme biasedness, prejudiced and discriminatory attitude against certain groups of people.
The question is why those ladies stood up against Madam Shamim(the head of the the brothel house) who was operating this illegal business of prostitution openly among a respectable residential area for years, where gentle neighborhood people were getting uncomfortable and being harrassed by this insanity for years and inspite of filing millions of reports to the local police they were unable to eradicate the Madam Shamim`s nuisance from their neighborhood. Poilce was openly supporting and protecting Madam Shamim`s brohtal.
The neighborhood people even sent millions of complanit letters to higher authorities, but, invain.
At the end these brave clads decided to eradicate this garbage of Madam Shamim to clean the gentle neighborhood of such scums like Madam Shamim who can grow and flourish in Pakistan anywhere under the protection of Police............what a shame...
I applaud the brave act of those Jamia Hafza clads, all the neighborhood thanked them personally and is supporting their brave and civilized act.
Pakistani people should learn that Garbage needs to be eradicated immediately and be dumped, if they won`t it will spoil the whole society which will stink and will cause millions of diseases.
This act has got nothing to do with Islam or any religion. B/c in every civilized country/society people will do the samething, if, proper action against people like Madam Shamim would be delayed by the Police.
And even if those Jamia Hafza clads got this insight by their religion that is the best insight one can get under the light of any religion. If their religion guided them to see the difference between wrong and right, then I am proud of those brave clads...............they did the right thing and there is NO doubt about it.
Let me give you the example of American society. American society is viewed as free for all kind of society........Few years ago, I moved in Richmond Virginia very fine neighborhood, all residential area....
I saw a stripper(Go Go club) in the middle of that neighborhood, all those people were extrtemely unhappy about that stripper club in that neighborhood and used to have local meetings to eradicate that club from that neigborhood. The owner of that club was very iunfluential and Police action was being delayed. and mind it stripper clubs are legal in America...........One day all the neighborhood got together , called the owner of the stripper club and beat him up. Police came , people got arrested and released, as a result stripper club got closed.
Prostitution is illegal in Pakistan and even in America. I am really surprised why Pakistani police was supporting Madam Shamim`s brothal(prostituion insitute) exactly under the nose of General Musharaf( the great)?
I think what Jamia Hafza clads did would have been done long ago by all the neighbohood themselves.....why did they wait? they knew Police won`t file charges against Madam Shamim and they knew Pakistani Law and order situation is very weak and they are mostly corrupt. All those neighborhood men and women should have gotten together and should have dumped Madam Shamim and her brothel from their neighborhood.
Anyway, All gentle Pakistanis should support Jamia Hafza clads brave action against the scums of the society. And help them eradicate more scums........I wish they should continue such efforts to clean Paki society from all kinds of corruption................We need more Jamia Hafza spirits in Pakistan.
I salute Jamia Hafza Clads for their insight, bravery, civilized action, and spirit.
Mind it I am not a burqa clad myself, but, I will always support the right action taken by whoever.........You go girls........
To call them lunatics show that we`re lunatics ourselves who are supporting illegal criminal activity in a residentail ``sharif`` neighborhood.

That was exactly my point. We do not seem to mind when the law is broken in support of what we want and condemn the police inaction only when it doesn`t suit us.

#87 janaab muhtaram dost sahib #87: you say I can claim to have seen more of Pakistan than you have
This is indeed the notion I most humbly seek your re-consideration - that in a few days you think you have seen more of Pakistan than any Pakistani. Indeed - even in a given day as a visitor flying god-like on a jet plane over a thousand miles of Pakistan, you would understand Pakistan less than a even one Pakistani child who spends that day as a student in a Pakistani school or as a member of a Pakistani household.

also, we don`t mind as long as the Islam is inflicted on poor Afghanis and Kashmiris for our defiance against Allah`s will (sins).

My comment was not meant to be taken seriously (did you miss the smiley icon?) and in any case referred to the geographical areas visited by me - from Khyber Pass to Karachi.
More seriously, my original comment was based on the desi psychology, which I do not think is that much different in Pakistan than it is in India. We tend to look approvingly on taking laws into our own hands when we believe we are dealing from a position of moral strength - as defined by the society in which we leave. Thus, when we catch a thief red-handed, the reaction is to catch him, give him a good thrashing, maybe even blacken his face rather than hand him over to the police. And when the police appear on the scene, they will rarely take any action against the people who had taken the law in their own hands.

R these people for real? Zeena prostitution exists everyhwere and societies that are so called more conservative also have worse cases of sexual abuse and exploitation typically along class lines. Gulf states are prime examples, do you know how many servants, nannies get raped?
Also I am absolutley positive that some of the self-righteous twits on this site have themselves indulged in these behaviors but they are the type to blame the ``Aunty Shamims`` of this world.

so what is next ?
...... here is what the ninjas will be saying after the next election as they go on a rampage killing bey-hijab women and beardless men in islamabad :
There is no democracy because the only source of power is Allah through the Koran, and not the people. If the people vote against the law of God, this is nothing other than blasphemy. In this case, it is necessary to kill the non-believers for the good reason that they wish to substitute their authority for that of God
................Ali Belhadj, vice-president FIS, algeria
and here is an example of what the jamia hafsa girls will do to their `godless` neighbors in G/6 :
..........the Rais and Bentalha massacres in particular shocked worldwide observers. Pregnant women were sliced open, children were hacked to pieces or dashed against walls, men`s limbs were hacked off one by one, and, as the attackers retreated, they would kidnap young women to keep as sex slaves. Although this quotation by Nesroullah Yous, a survivor of Bentalha, may be an exaggeration, it expresses the apparent mood of the attackers:
``We have the whole night to rape your women and children, drink your blood. Even if you escape today, we`ll come back tomorrow to finish you off! We`re here to send you to your God!``

Yes, I agree prostitution do exists everywhere and also I do agree with your point on gulf states........
But, please re read my post #89 carefully and you`ll get the gist of my pov.
It doesn`t mean we should condemn Hafza girsl right action and should start supporting scums like Madam Shamim............
My whole point is why Mdam Shamim was operating her prostitution institue in a sharif neighborhood? She could have gone to ``heera mandi`` type area..........
Nobody in any society will be comfortable , if, scums like Mdam Shamim will start their brohtals in our neighborhoods.
Even in America, if, I see such illegal activity going on in my neighborhood, I will report to the Police and I will have meeting with my all my neighbors to get rid of such scums from our neighborhood. Period.
