A Profile In Courage

In India they say, ``There is only one MAN in Pakistan and his name is Asma Jehangir``

Indeed Asma is a beacon of hope for the oppressed classes of pakistan and women who unfortunately arn`t aware of their own potential in most cases. She deserves the gratitude of the ones who understand the sad plight of pakistani nation`s ideological problems.

Asma is a ray of light in the sea of bigotry, ignorance and barbarism. Her courage and undaunted efforts to raise voice for the rights of oppressed and presecuted are laudable. She is one of handful of persons, the nation can rightly be proud of.

Thanks for reminding us about an icon who is well known all over the world for her activism, courage, brilliance, and insights. In recent years, the number of women lawyers of Pakistani origin has also increased tremendously. I am sure Ms. Jehangir is a source of inspiration to many.

The issue of human rights is no longer specific to one country. As a result, there are global organizations who try to assist various countries all over the world to handle their internal chaos. Asma was also invited by various UN organizations in the past few years. She is indeed a multi-faceted talented woman who is well regarded even beyond her area of expertise.

I was in my teens, the 1st time I heard both sisters at the Business and Professional Women`s Club in Lahore. My aunt was one of the key organizers and had invited a few of us who were studying engineering to attend this session. We came from a very different mindset. The participants included poets, writers, businesswomen, lawyers, teachers and a few doctors. The energy level was amazing. The poets, writers and lawyers were very vehement about their dislike for the mullahs and their thought process. At that time, we were too young to decipher the tussle. We never even knew what it meant to have mullahs or juhulas (to be more appropriate) twist and tweak the lives of many women. Looking back, I can see why it was and is necessary to continue to raise awareness on issues pertaining to women`s lives in a suffocating society.
