Mr. Hoodbhoy,
What is the point of having an emergency/martial law? Would it not be better to simply have another rigged elections with PML-Q/MQM alliance winning hands down and elect him as the Presdent for another 5 years with overwhelming majority. Why risk opprobrium by having martial law?
Regards

Dear writer
This article is extremely biased and prejudiced article among current article on front page......
What`s the point of showing these pictures in your article?
Clearly you are trying to dissolve the actual issue here. You must be MQM and in favor of Musharaf`s dictatorial regimen.......
You had nevers to cut and paste these rather benign pictures, but, you don`t have any intellectual honesty to cut and passte the pictures of the blood shed of innocent Pakistanis @ the hands of your favourite MQM......
You have the nerves to ignore the killings of hundreds of innocent Karrachiits @ the hands of MQM gundaas and instead posting these pictures....
Who are you fooling here? You can not fool us....Musharaf`s days are gone...
MQM have played it`s cruel role in killing those poor Pakistanis.......
Nothing wrong with Hafsa girls....they did not kill innocent people, they just did a great favour in eradicating the big nuisance from a shareef neighborhood, onlyif you can understand....I hope you have your family too.How will you feel ,if, your family is being affected in exactly the same situation?
How will you feel,if, Police won`t support your right?
Anyway, that is a separate issue....the main issue is MQM and Musharaf`s bizarre regiment.........
I truly believe that CJP has all the rights to have peaceful rallies, they did their peaceful demonstrations throughout Pakistan with no riots, with no blood shed. CJP`s right to go to Karachi is within the constitution of Pakistan and no one can snatch that right from him or from other citizens of Pakistan as long as they are marching peacefully.
Now, Karachi is not a separate country, Karachi is an integral part of Pakistan.
MQM ( so called champions of democracy and champions of poor people`s rights) disrupted CJP`s right to come to Karachi and started attacking and harrassing other peaceful people of Karachi who set the stage for the demonstrations. Not only harrassed them, they started gun fires and started killing innocent Pakistanis for NO reason at all.
And the most tragic and shameful aspect of all this tragedy is MQM( a political party) did all these killings purely for the support of Musharaf, the worst dictator. Why?
Obviously,Musharaf and MQM are from the same ethnic background. So, MQM`s shameless support for Musharaf proves one thing for sure, that MQM was/is/will never ever be a sincere and loyal political party...A political party means who works for the establishment of pure democracy.
What kind of crap party is this? which is supporting an illegitimate Army dictator, just because of his ethnicity and in this process MQM puts Mushy`s dictatorship above democracy.........Sad haan.
Few days back MQM has had their rally against Mullahs....Mullahs did not kill anyone at least, they just broke CDs and closed some music stores......they made a big fuss about it and label it as law breaking Mullahs( I am not in favor of those Mullahs either)
Now, who broke the law more, those who killed innocent Pakistanis or who broke few CDs?
Who broke the law, those who are supporting an illegitimate dictator based on his ethnicity and killing and brutalizing hundreds of innocent Pakistanis?
Now, who broke the law more, those who illegally snatched CJP`s right to come to Karachi or those who wished to have peaceful rallies?
Now , who broke the law, those who are doing everything to sabotage the democracy or those who wished to furnish democracy?
Now, who sabotaged the law and created all this lawlessness in Karachi....MQM and Musharaf.......
We will never ever forgive both of them for the blood shed of poor Pakistanis........they have to answer ..........sitting in London and ordering for all these riots doesn`t give us the answers........
Altaf Pai and MQM are the gifts of Zia ul huq to Pakistan and now Pakistan has to suffer and Karachi is burning since then......................
Musharaf and MQM are just a disgrace to Pakistan.......Musharaf`s son Bilal is safe in Boston.......
But, those who got killed on the streets of Karachi, their mothers are crying tonight and their children might not get any food tomorrow,b/c their fathers are gone....they are now orphans, they will go hungry to beds....with tears of helplessness...................
sad, sad, sad................
Media is helpless, Geo tv is helpless, Pakistanis are helpless...Musharaf and MQM are in power..........Let`s see how much more blood shed these monsters will suck before leaving their dictatorship.......
Go Musharaf go..Go Musharaf Go...

Also for the eyes of Hypocrites who are now blaming everything on religion....while supporting the real killers, and they are MQM........My message is, what goes around that comes around..right now, you`re playing ethnic tunes with MQM and trying to dissolve their brutal actions by diverting them in to these benign pictures...while hiding actual brutal pictures, when humans were shot dead on the streets of karachi and there was no one for their protection.........and here are the people who have audacity to equate those killings to few CD burnings and closing of few Music shops......tsk,tsk,tsk........
Human blood is cheaper than water....b/c it is not their blood , it`s the blood of those poor Pakistanis who got killed for NO reason.......at the hands of MQM gundaas......
Nero(Mushy) was playing his fiddle, while Rome(Pakistan) was burning....
Yes, I watched Musharaf`s addressing a rally in Islamabad and it was quite obvious that the rally was a pre planned Mushy`s chamchaa rally (funded by govt. @ the expense of poor Pakistanis taxes). This man, musharaf( the dictator) was just doing a kutputlee tamasha with a dugduggi in his hand, he reminded me of an acrobatic and juggler trying to make his puppets dance on his own dictatorial tunes.......
He calls himself President of Pakistan, well, he is NOT...he has just hijacked this the most prestigious and honorable status by hook or by crook..........He was never given that honor by the people of Pakistan. He just looted and plundered the People of Pakistan, ransacked them and became Pseudo President of Pakistan....
He also calls himself, Chief of Army staff..Well, he was given that prestigious status by Pakistani Army, when his role was meant to defend Pakistan @ the Pakistani borders.
He was merely a servant of the people of Pakistan being fed @ the taxes of Pakistani citizens...............
But, that was then...Now,by becoming dictator and tyrant...he has lost his original title as Army general technically b/c Mary chief of staff is supposed to be the security guard for their countries, NOT a tyrant like Musharaf.....
While he was addressing his own khabees chamchaas...he was acting weird, bizarre and like a third rated street style gangster who has lost his identity and didn`t know what was he uttering ...his words were just incoherent....he was wearing shalwar qameez..LOL
And was trying to imitate his close political lotas..........or he was trying to be the leader of Pakistan( father of the nation)....LOL...
Yes, he is father of nation....My foot.
He was absolutely not in his right mind, he was in his own state of confusion...just praising himself.....he was just jumping here and there on the set stage.....exactly like an acrobatic monkey...........All he was saying was just a big slap on the faces of all Pakistanis.........he was actually bullying all Pakistanis...but, in reality he was bullying himself...........he was smiling and laughing with some up beat music...........
And @ the same time Karachi was burning, Karachi was turning in to another massive grave yard, another Beirut.....Peshawar was burning......
Musharaf reminded me of Nero, playing his fiddle while Rome was burning...........
Musharaf was playing his monkey tamasha, while Pakistan was burning...........

In Pakistan only Musharaf`s life is important, everyone else is just flesh and bones, so what, if, they got killed innecessantly .....
And I started laughing, too...may be I wanted to cry, but, seeing his acrobatic drama...instead I laughed and specially when he started advising lawyers to stop playing politics......
So, General sahib is NOT playing any dirty politics...LOL
Look who`s talking?.....
After seeing innocent people being killed on the streets of Pakistan ........
I can only wish,if, someday someone could drag Musharaf out of his black staff car and keep him dragging on the streets...how will he feel?
Honestly, all the dictators deserve such dragging..........
Musharaf days are over....Musharaf era is gone......he has had enough looted all Pakistani money and now his next seven generations will live like queens and Kings...No problems....
Just like prior dictators, Ayub Khan, Zia ul Huq, etc, etc....their generations are living like kings and queens......and now Mushy`s turn.....
Let`s see, Pakistani people will remain sleeping or will wake up out of their slumber.....
This is a big slap and gift from Musharaf for Pakistanis...this is a big wake up call and an eye opener.........
Musharaf, you have to exit.......but, not via proper door....you have already closed that proper front door.....run as far as you can....via back door, if, any left........or why don`t you get a Canadian visa( the way you suggested it for other Pakistanis).....remember..I hope you don`t have dementia.....
Musharaf,``you have to add one last chapter in your book(in the line of fire) or may be you wish to change the name in to,``Mushy playing fiddle while Pakistan was burning in the line of fire.``
Very true.........sigh*

This whole article is based on hypocrisy...there is not a single truth here...this article is pre planned to hide MQM`s cruel and brutal faces by projecting religious issues in which there was not even a single killing occured......
This article is another slap on the faces of Pakistanis......who are already blinded by Musharaf`s brutal regiment......
This article is another shallow try to dissolve the actual situation in Pakistan........
So, MQM`s are Talibans..............MQM`s are jihadis...MQM`s are fascist Mullahs who killed innocent people for their own motives.......
Now that MQM has shown us it`s real ugly face and has openly supported Musharaf(just b/c of their ehtnicity) and MQM( champion of democracy) has supported army dictator against democracy...which shows how much hypocrite anyone could be.......
This article merely used two words for MQM and Musharaf`s brutality and the rest of the article is full of false propaganda against Pakistanis......to deviate the exact situation..... they are mere violent allies of musharaf...and that`s it........
Why this hypocrisy?
Why these double standards?
This article is just another disappointment...............just a self mockery.....
Just to save MQM`s face value this article is even unable to criticise MQM, instead merely calling them ,``violent allies`` and trying to make an excuse for their brutality..........
What should I call this?
Karachi is burning, Karachiits are being butchered and people are just making an excuse that this is nothing serious, just a little violent bout of MQM in support of Musharaf.......
Wawawawa, Hypocrisy...thy name is this article!!!!

``If at all it is to be prevented, resolute opposition from its citizens will be needed to prevent more Lal Masjids from creating their own shariah squads. ``
I doubt Pakistani liberals have the guts to do so because they also share those dreamy arabian night fantasies. Just a show of a few dandas from these burqa clad gundis and a few gaalis from the mullahs is enough to turn them into choohaas.

Several other writers have also taken note of the Mullah-Army nexus and it is both a fascinating and vexing issue for anyone interested in the dynamics of civil society and state formation, but especially so for the Pakistani state`s financiers overseas. By promoting Musharraf and the war on the Taliban simultaneously, George Bush has actually managed to bring the army even closer to the mullahs. But the situation is not sustainable and Hoodhboy argues that the army knows this and is planning a crackdown in order to secure long term backing from Washington -- this is a bold assertion and exactly what makes Hoodhboy such an interesting read and an eye opener about Pakistan`s reality.

The professor is now getting really paranoid.
I agree with ``The responsibility for the current bout of religious (terrorism?) in Islamabad falls squarely on General Musharraf’s government.``, except for substituting `activism` for the actual word used. Though not with the thesis suggesting Musharraf being a partner in the Lal Masjid game. That is at best a conspiracy theory and trying to trivialize the activism of a civil society organisation (yes ... Jamia Hafsa is civil society too ...) in playing its role of checks and balances upon the state within the confines of the mandate it is awarded by the people.
Musharraf`s responsibility simply rests in his invasion of Waziristan, and then later his continuing to be an ally of the war-on-terror while his own citizens in FATA were subjected to air-attacks. This resulted in :
1) the demise of whatever administrative control Pakistan had over FATA in the form of Political Agents and their exercising of the Frontier Crimes Regulations Act to maintain law & order,
2) in turning the guns of the existing militant outfits upon itself which had so far been busy fighting NATO in Afghanistan in Waziristan`s case or Kashmir in case of Punjab.
3) in turning the non-militant madrassas into militant ones (e.g Hafsa) in sympathy.
The central thesis of this essay appears to be that Musharraf is as much in league with Lal Masjid Clerics as he is with MQM, and now he will set Islamabad ablaze with the help of the former because setting Karachi ablaze with the help of the latter did not buy him enough time.
But the author forgets that Maulana Falur-Rahman, allegedly the cleric most influential over the Jihadi outfits and a participant in Musharraf`s political set-up, was the foremost in condemning actions of the Jamia as `unislamic` and even called a conference of the federation of madrassas to announce a formal resolution in this behalf.
Besides, the Hafsa movement was no more than a peaceful sit-in in January i.e. much before the CJ crisis emerged on March 9, but turned militant only when rangers were called in and stationed around their premises. That prompted them to challenge Govt writ forcefully by abducting aunty shamim and shutting down the brothel timed just as the CJ crisis hit and was gaining momentum. Their role was always clear in weakening Musharraf.
However, curiously, one wonders why the abduction of aunty shamim carries so much sympathy by the Hafsa critics. The girls abducted four policemen as well at the same time. Is it by omission or is there more to it? It appears to me that aunty shamim more closely represents the Pakistani State and civil society in the mindset of these critics than those policemen who were meted out the same treatment.
Then, the author`s ire is on ``The Pakistani state has shown astonishing patience.`` ... and interprets that as ``which has clearly chosen to secretly sanction it.`` But I wish he would have listed what choices did the Pakistani state have?
He does mention cutting off electricity, water, gas etc (i.e. laying siege) but that`s just being naive. The Hafsa is reported to be well-provisioned with generators and fuel as well as food supplies to last months. In the meantime their supporters would begin to march. Storm it in an armed action? Sure, but that`s exactly what the girls want. A couple of girls` bodies riddled with Govt bullets and the country will be plunged in all out Civil war. So the Gov`t rightly did all it could in exercising patience and sending in their chief trouble-shooter Choudhary Shujaat to call them his `daughters` and talk peace.
Lastly, the author states the purpose behind all this to be imposition of emergency or Martial-Law by Musharraf to ensure his survival. That action, if taken, would remove whatever semblance of State`s writ remains and will result in anarchy, civil war, and a certain UDI by at-least FATA. Musharraf is not that reckless nor his corp commanders would support it, and obviously no political party either.
Best course for Musharraf right now is to withdraw the reference against CJ, resign both his positions, appoint a caretaker Government, and announce elections before schedule.
It increasingly seems he is prepared to do the latter two but not the former, which is the contentious point and may result in more bloodshed before he`s forced to do it.

I cannot understand why this tirade against MQM has been going on, forgetting that MQM is a represntative party of more than 15 million Urdu-speaking people of Pakistan. A mistake might have taken place by our political players, as was the case with Congress and All India Muslim League in 1947, or Awami League and Pakistan Army in 1971 in East Pakistan, but that doesnot mean that we should just branding a terror outfit to a representative political party.

I find the This picture.. Victory for the virtuous] ..really humourous. The well known colomnist Irfan Hussain called them, Chicks with sticks who perhaps need lots of underarm deodarants inside the Burqas.
I wonder if Pakistan has halloween`s day! you know when these creatures fly through the night skies on a broom handle!
I know lots of countries ranging from Bangla desh, India, Nepal etc have their share of domestic mess. But Pakistan seems to remain Numero Uno.

Ditto.....
Exactly, that`s the main reason, I called this article incoherent.....first this article talks about Norht( two words) and then all of a suddne, everything turns in to south.......
I don`t see any difference between this article and the confused and clueless article written by some haji007 kartoos....
And that`s the reason, this article needs some threashing for either being clueless or being ignorant or being prejudiced ,but, making no sense ....utter non sense........gibberish...

Dear writer,
Offering a contrarian view while Pakistan is gripped with this tsunami of anti-Mqm/Musharraf sentiment certainly deserves top marks for bravey and professional integrity.
Top down view is always ignored when momentum favors complete annhilation of the enemy. Tablighees/Jamia Hafsa motely group smell blood and are going for the jugular, they want to finish this feeble attempt to rid Pakistan of this religious monstrosity and see this opportunity offered by Mqm/Mush as a god sent blessing even though it may have come from Altaf Hussein sitting comfortably in London.
Sound of anti-Mush drums are getting louder and louder, soon we will hear the sound of soldier boots racing towards the belleagured Presidency and then the curtain will rise for another saviour. Imran Khan, NS, BB, Qazi Hussein et al will celebrate for they have once again shown the world that Pakistan is their fiefdom, little do they know that each step they take pushes Pakistan ever so close to another bloody civil war and eventual breakup and this time the world will not only stand and watch, this time rest of the world will decide when and how this Godforsaken place is to be divided so it never rears it ugly head.

........I think one needs to stop trying to use every incidence to push one`s political agenda......From what I have read the responsibility of the killings in Karach is being placed on MQM.........If this is correct, then it should be understood that the MQM is the most secular party in Pakistan.......It would have then committed murder - a crime far larger than burning CDs.........
........Musharraf, Jamia Hafsa and MQM need to be tamed.........It is not a question of religion and secularism.........It is a question of people trying to get power, through various illegal means..........
