dr hoodbhoy is right in focusing on the real threat to pakistan (and mankind) ....... mqm thugs, military goons, the jiyalas of ppp and even the abomionable chaudaries of gujarat are schoolyard bullies compared to the suicidal and hiomicidal jihadis coming out of mansoora, akora khattak and jamia hafsa ........... they have to be exterminated before there can be any meaningful progress towards democracy and decency .........
....... before holding the next elections, the religious parties must be banned and the mullahs sent on a paid vacation to club gitmo, members of the thunder squad and other lashkars executed, and the ninjas of jamia hafsa gainfully employed by sister shamim ........... otherwise the next election will be the last election for a long time to come ................ i have no desire to say, `i told you so` ......... the stakes are too high ........
``Voting is underway in Algeria for parliamentary elections which are being held amid heavy security following a series of bomb attacks. In the latest incident, one man was killed and five people injured in an explosion in the city of Constantine.
The interior minister said the blast was an ``act of sabotage`` against the Algerian democratic system.
An Islamic group said it carried out suicide bombings that killed 33 people in the capital, Algiers, last month.
Voters will elect 389 members of parliament in the general election, in which more than 20 political parties are taking part.
The Islamists are still banned from politics since elections they were set to win in 1992 were annulled, and militants have called on Algerians to boycott the polls. ``

``Whisky giant sold to billionaire
Mr Mallya`s United Breweries Group confirmed the purchase
An Indian billionaire has bought the Scottish whisky distiller Whyte & Mackay in a £595m ($1.2bn) deal.
The spirits giant United Breweries, which is headed by Vijay Mallya, announced the all-cash acquisition to the Bombay Stock Exchange.``

{Conjecture? Maybe, but not by me. So what is the correct figure and how do you get it?
According to the 1998 census, Urdu speaking population in entire Pakistan was 7.57% of the total of 132.35 million. How much does that come to? A little over 10 million. Given the estimated population now of about 150 million , it would come to 11.3 million. Unless of-course they have somehow taken to breeding a lot faster than all other ethnic groups since 1998 :) }
1998 census that too by a PML (N) rural chauvinistic regime (trying to avoid Poonjabi slants). Granted, you have a valid point based on official stats.
Arrey Bhai don`t count MQM (Haqiqiq) seats. They kill you if they find you remember?
{All my facts are correct. You haven`t been able to dispute a single one with facts of your own. Hot air does not count as you obviously are aware}
I chose not to dispute them because they are nothing but fabrications, your insistence does not make them true, I know, I was there.
{I`m not talking about the Major who was kidnapped in Hyderabad and later released. I`m talking about the armyman who was killed and there`s an FIR personally against Altaf Hussain for that murder. I may be mistaken about the rank}
ISI Major was kidnapped in Landhi, u have the rank correct.
{It is public knowledge that the present Governor Sindh Ishrat-ul-Ibad is a murderer, and the respected crime-fighter and CPLC chief, Jameel Yousaf, had revealed details about him to the press when he became Governor, for which he was removed. How many other examples do you want? On whose orders was Azim Tariq killed because he was getting too popular in his own right and rivaling Altaf Hussain?}
Public knowledge? Zee sahib, such melodrama. Iam not aware of what Jameel Yusuf had to say, but knew Ishrat from DMC, he is not the typical Liaqat Baloch, Hafiz Salman Butt kinda badmash norwas he in any ways like the other shareef looking thugs, beyond that what happened in the nineties was abnormal by any standards, I will not make any claims but this much I do know that he (Ibad) was also a victim of state terrorism. And its sad that the ``general public`` has completely forgotten the state sponsored terrorism against mohajirs.
Azim Tariq (mahroom) was a decent man, whomsoever killed him or gave the order for his assassination shall burn in hell till eternity, that goes for anyone.
{Sure. If you don`t like the facts, dispute the source. Whatever is stated in explicit detail on fas.org is what the entire Pakistan knows anyway, and now the truth has been refreshed in public memory by events of 12th May, that MQM is an anti-state, murderous crew of thugs.}
I have posted what Fas stands for, I know u r a gentleman at heart and wud not like me to repeat it, so do me a last favor in figuring out how does a science based institute in the US get involved with a small party like Mqm out in another country.

hamidm #65 You are jumping at the low hanging fruit - the islamic fascists and the ethnic fascists - rather than on the tree itself (Rule of the Generals, rather than of the Rule of the Law).

Good Professor has hit the nail in one of the heads of a 12 headed monster known as Pakistan. The heads (challenges) of Pakistan are integrated and inter-related; lawlessness, dictatorships, intolerance, ethnic hatred, gender inequality, but the torso of this 12-headed monster is what unites all these heads. Yes, it is Islam. Kill it at the core. Else, new heads will keep popping up.

You are so naive...Where is the evidence that all those were suicide bombings? And even,if, they were suicide bombings ,they are equally CONDEMNABLE.......
Wherever butchring human lives happened,they were vampire acts.....
You see, now you are, too quick to judge religious person to do such acts.....
Where is the evidence that any religious person was involved in those acts of brutality?
It is so very easy to jump and blam religion for everything now-a days.......
I strongly believe, anyone involved in butchering humans is just vampire......and those who stay quiet and start making lame excuses for those vapires are equally involved in those acts.......

It is not 32, it is 49 now.........
Ditto......
If, someone comes up with their own extremist views about certain religions,why start blaming religion for that?
This writer has just tried to diffuse the whole brutal situation in Karachi.........and those who are making excuses for this situation and blaming religion for that are equally brutal............

And why everything that Pakistani police states is true, while Pakistani Police`s record is so very stigmatic itself.......Police department in Pakistan is th eworst department and that`s also one of the main reasons of lawlessness in Pakistan.....tyhey are extremely dishonest and they can butcher anyone any time just for the sake of money......
So, my point is again where is evidence and data that all those killings were commited by suicide bombers based on some religious basis?
You have no clue what you are talking about? Sorry....

#73 Zeena: I agree with you that by dragging in the islamic fascists, the writer seems to have deliberately tried to deflect attention away from the ethnic fascists. However, that does not mean that the islamic fascists are anything more than tools used by musharraf to stay in power.
#76 Posted by Folio on May 17, 2007 6:49:37 am
The good professor had a range of concerns. The article is a medley of concerns, not necesarily abt Karachi alone. As I read it, Dr. Hoodbhoy sees it from the pov of Musharraf failing the Pak nation.
Having seen a couple of conflict situations, I find Karachi no different. It`s the devil in people.......greed for power and pelf.
The same subcontinetal ppl behave well in UK an north America. Sometimes I find some banks, business establishments manned almost entirely by our men/women. They deliver the first-world services. Nobody bothers abt the colour or denomination of the people they work with or they serve.
Coming back to Karachi; Altaf shot himself in the foot.
Bulleya,

T Saab…that’s the dumbest cop-out, the Islami fascists are not the tool used by the dictator, but a nuisance on their own. Do you think they will be any less fascists had there been a Civilian power? Think of how many religious riots perpetrated by these fascists were conducted under the Civilian rule. Zia may have legitimized them, but they are born like that, with their heads up some divine hole. 3 dozens killed in Karachi is a sad series of events, but don’t you think that in a city as big as Karachi, it is not really that bad (not to make light of it). Look at what happens in Pee-shower on daily basis?
I don’t think that the good Professor has absolved MQM of any other terrorist. He is just presenting his views on the current pathetic state of the nation, which shouldn’t be. The funny thing is that all the closet Mullahs see nothing wrong with anything and are trying to shut a voice of reason, pretty rare in a place called Pakistan.

#77 Kulharee: What was the outcome of the Hafsa episode? The maulvis were allowed to roam free in Islamabad, intimidating shopkeepers and ordinary citizens. And the government acceded to the outrageous demand that Lal Masjid be allowed to issue laws that the government would enforce.
What do you say to that?
What do you say to that?

American scholar holds that manifestation of islamophobia in the west connected with the absence of inter-religious dialogue
Every year about 20000 Americans embrace Islam. It was said by scholar on Islamic researches from US Denver University, professor, Lakat Takim at press conference in Baku. He came to Azerbaijan via US Department of State aiming to make acquaintance with religious situation in the country (“Turan”). As L.Takim underlined after 9/11 acts of terror in US a part of America was aggressively set against Islam. But major part of Americans defended Islam. Another consequence of 9/11 was increase of attention of America paid to Islam. On the other hand, organization structuring of US Muslims started with the purpose of making active their participation in public life of America.
Accordingly to Takim, currently in USA there are over 7 millions Muslims and 1900 mosques, including 1700 sunni and 200 shii ones. American scholar believes that manifestation of islamophobia in the west connected with absence of inter-religious dialogue. He doesn’t agree with the calls which come from some European states on changing Quranic verses. “For Muslims Quran is Allah’s word. And nobody, even Prophet, can change them. But there are interpretations of Quran written by people, and they can be changed”, Takim holds.
He declared that it is impossible to give explanation to insults against Prophet as freedom of speech, practiced in some European countries. In USA it is prohibited by laws. Scholar doesn’t accept the term “Islamic terrorism”. “In Northern Ireland Protestants, Catholics commit acts of terrors against one another, and nobody calls it “Christian terrorism”. At least such expression as “Irish terrorism” is used”, scholar said. At the same time he reminded that when India created
A-bomb it was called “Indian bomb”. And when Pakistan got nuclear weapon it was called “Islamic bomb”. L. Takim abstained from commenting relations between America and Iran.
