Abu-Safwan:
There is this mentality among a certain class of Pakistanis that they equate good-looks, height, white-skin, gora-accent, with ’’smartness’’...
No wonder the Pak-army has gotten its ass kicked everwhere except where it excels: in conquering..its own country. When they go for training to Sandhurst & West-point what else you expect from these Alsatians. Will they ever bark at their trainers?
This Amritsari-Panjabi guy ( you don’t get more Panjabi than that) who had such the hatred & revulsion for his fellow Panjabis...seething hatred because of the baighairtee they had shown in always having a co-operative, compromising, loyal attitude with their paymasters.
This guy was on a very senior position in a multi-national.
About Ayub Khan (No Pathaan, he was a Chhachhee, a mongrel like this hamidm2 here)]
he used to say ’’ O meiN edday tikkay , kabaab kar kay khavaaN’’ [O i want to feed on his flesh-kebobs]
He told me of how he heard some Panjabis say after the Tashkent agreement:
’’ Look at Shastri..the puny tiny man in a dhoatee, dark color, speaks english in Hindi accent........., ’’
’’ An then there’s our Ayub Khan: Goraa-rUnG, Blue-Eyes,6 feet tall;...resembles Darpan!
[a Pak movie actor]
For Pakis:
working for someone & getting a job where they can feel goraa-ish & act goraa-ish is the ultimate achievement. They try to impress their paindoo kith & kin even by such trivial,
chhachoarpUN, like drinking coke in cans , rather than bottles. [ I discovered this recently...
because cans are not available in Pak, they impress fellow Pakis by such ’’Smart’’ moves]
These Kuttas from Cantonment & Colonies will never ever utter a single word against their Paymasters........
also a a sure way to expose a Quadiyyani! ( double-whammy indeed!)

democracy is a self-correcting mechanism and better to have corrupt politicans who can be held accountable than to have an uncorrupt khalifa or an uncorrupt hitler who is not accountable.

Yaar he is saying that puting on a necktie is a must. The advantage of putting on a necktie is that when you remove it you feel real fresh & easy.
But if someone decides never to put on a necktie & makes himself , & those around him as well, comfortable ..that is a no no. Why? that someone must be a dictator & not believe in putting on a necktie ( democracy)

Dictatorship also works very slow, and so does the bureaucracy; both are extraordinarily corrupt as well. What is your point?

abu_safwan #151 Democracy does indeed work slowly - the 27th amendment to the US Constitution (on controls over congressman salaries) was finally passed in 1970, even though an amendment to this affect was first proposed in (sit down before you read this) 1789!! The right to vote was included as a basic right in 1779, and extended to blacks in 1870 and to women in 1919.
And that is the greatness of this system - as you say, democracy is a self-correcting mechanism and better to have corrupt politicans who can be held accountable than to have an uncorrupt khalifa or an uncorrupt hitler who is not accountable.
As for the panjab, if you look at the voting record of the panjab you will see that ethnic politics do not hold sway in the panjab - the two bhuttos are proof of that. mqm could have gained a foothold in the panjab, but after May 12 that is over - mqm office office holders in the panjab resigned in a number of places after May 12. Ethnic politics are played by those who seek personal gain and/or cannot see beyond their nose. The Chief Justice is non-Panjabi, and yet he has won the hearts of all pakistanis (including panjabis) because of the courage and integrity he has shown. I rest my case.

Re: # 164 saima shah
you are missing a point here and oversimplyfiying this matter. prseisden musharafa is neither liberal nor conservative.he has shown oin last 8 years that his only concerned is power.
president has been a great supporter of jihadis organization before 9/11 in fact there are many jihadi organization which have been prevailing with hid ``aasheerbaad``/
as for as hios support of american`s led war of terrorism is concerned, it doesnt make himn liberal, even general zia was the supporter of ameraica.it has been the policy of the state not of general musharaf aLONE.

Dear Dr Hoodbhoy.
Perhaps it is just me, but I find some logical inconsistencies in the theory that Pervez Musharraf is behind the fundamentalization of Pakistan/Islamabad.
Here are the inconsistencies:
1. His own liberalism; assuming that he is genuinely liberal, the idea of using religion becomes less statistically likely. Of course, this is hypothetical.
2. The general tendency of being pro-capitalism, pro-american. Somebody like that would see more benefit from assisting America in Afghanistan to spread modernity rather than to side with the Taliban. This too bears out with other actions taken in Afghanistan.
3. The intense revolt from modernity and liberalism could be a normal reaction of the people of Pakistan since modernity is literally being thrust down them for the last 8 years at a pace they are probably not ready for. The manner in which it is being done--beamed down the liberal media 24/7 probably scares the average guy who thinks that women with less clothes are the worst invention of modern life.
4. The questions worth asking are who is funding the violent religious groups and who will they ultimately benefit. Keeping Pakistan weak is of benefit to whom?

Way to go LaaL Masjid.
The Little RED Masjid that could!
..........................
Now why do I get this uplifting feel that Q2 & Q32 and other Islam-haters & murtadoons will exhaust an acrid smell of charred flesh from their stenchy behinds.
Islamabad, May 12 : The Lal Masjid administration here has issued preliminary `Sharia` guidelines for all spheres of life``, including legislation, human rights, education, health, employment, taxation and banking.
It has distributed books containing 50 `guidelines` among the people who gathered at the mosque for Friday prayers, the Dawn reported.
Following are some of the `guidelines`:
. General amnesty for all exiled and victimised political leaders.
. Cut in taxes: The ulema demanded reforms in the taxation system under which all `unjustified` taxes were withdrawn.
. Enforcement of the Sharia needed to protect all women from sexual harassment and to eliminate gender discrimination.
. Urdu to be declared the official language of Pakistan
. Abolish interest-based banking system, and replace it with an Islamic one.
. Provide shelter to every citizen of the country. Plots measuring 10 marlas to 1 kanal should be provided to the poor and low-paid workers and construction material be provided to them at subsidised rates.
. Introduce `code of conduct` to deal with obscenity in the print and electronic media.
. Government officials should undergo special training so that they fully understand their `Islamic duties`.
