Without touching anything else that you brought up in that post, I must nevertheless strenuously object to your implication that ``kutta`` is a derogatory term. The millions of American pet owners who treat their ``kuttas`` as just another family member - and I am talking ghar-ghar ki kahani - will fully disagree.

Need I remind you that mian Mushy himself - the favorite of the Amrikkans, LOVES the canines.

In fact, some have even accused him of belonging to that lineage!

This article by Imran Khan was I think published somewhere in 1995/6.At that time most of my friends & acquaintances were happy to see these thoughts expressed.These still hold true for most of us except that :Imran Khan did not present a good example by his Sita White scandal.

In fact his knee-jerk reaction to Sita`s firm & resolute stand besmirched the reputation of a)a pakhtoon b)Imran c)Pakistani & d)Pakistan& e)a muslim: as far as the farangi world is concerned.In truth,the tough & honourable stand taken by Sita are one of the several occasions when our leaders,celebtries,spokesman & defenders have to publicly eat crow & dishonour the nations` good name(or whatever is left to be salvaged).

I consider myself one of the brothers of Saleem Sinai(the character from Midnight`s Children by Rushdie...Laanat-ul-Lah Ilaih). I am the brother who stayed back whereas Saleem Sinai left the homeland accompanied by his governess & his father`s ICS boss,who raised him as a future track horse to run in the Pakistani politics.I am the one who grew up in & around the Civil Service,went to the Club(``not after 8.p.m! then the desi couples would dance too...Naked! adil my teenage years` mentor confided.).Liquor was available on asking,officers would not be promoted if the wife wears a burqua.Desi children would somedays be let in the inner sanctum of the club

And then my journey to de-educate myself & to learn Urdu & Farsi & Arabie started and like open sesame I felt like what those highjacked passengers must have felt like albeit intellectually & then for almost a lifetime.

Iqbal rescued me.He is the arbiter,in my opinion the only one who can explain the 20th/21st century in the best way to me.Many people give him credit for a muslim homeland but in all fairness his dream has really come true in the shape of Iran.Irani muslims owe their success to Iqbal & later Shariati.Iqbal said that the one greatest single event in the history of the ummah was the embracing of Islam by Iran.The arabie/ajamie personna complemented each other here & flourished into a civilisation unparalleld in human history to this day.

I am very very happy that your research is leading you this way.May Allah bestow His blessings upon you & your near & dear ones.

That ``masterpiece`` was finished in about an hour and a half or so. I was drained & exhausted after that. I had been mulling and thinking about writing this for almost 4/5 years but wanted to do in a way that it did not appear as a ``show-off`` . It was written more for cathhartic reasons..as you will notice, the ``masterpiece`` is more about me than Salman``.

Now that hamidm2 , my arch enemy here, has given me the best compliment, yet least expected from him........it may so happen that I find a resting place and cease to wander ports & oceans in search of redemption.

naaah! Dm, there can be nothing more bland than a steak or roast meat (with no marinade). Moong dal, soaked and partially spouted has more flavour than the above.

The comparison is not justified. To assess full potential of Indian journalists you need 60 years of authoritarian and messy rule (which the Indians were deprived of!). 19 months are not enough. This is not to take away credit from the brave Paki journalists though. Ayaz Amir, Burki, Irfan Husain, Aijaz Haidar are very good. But yes, Islam, Quran, Paigambar, and Allah are UNTOUCHABLES.

Thanks for posting echoboom`s post. I am a fan of echoboom. He is original, just like hamidm and has deep knowlege of Islam and Muslim history and is equally congnizant, if not proud, of the achievements of pre-islamic India.

Without the likes of echo and hamidm, chowk.com would be bland like Moong ki daal, and that too without tadka.

I fully agree with you re. Indian journalists. Their spinelessness was clearly shown during Indira Gandhi`s emergency when, in the famous words of Advani, they were only asked to bend but they all crawled. A possible exception was Arun Shourie of the Indian Express. The Emergency was never overthrown, it was simply lifted by Indira Gandhi when she thought it fit to do so.

Contrast that with Pakistan. Ayub Khan`s rule was overthrown by demonstrations in the streets. Musharraf, too, is facing a similar threat. What is doubtful, however, is the Pakistani intellegentia`s and its journalists` commitment to democracy: they almost all turn against their politicians when they do what desi politicians do and welcome khakis with open arms.

I have read Urdu newspapers as well and they too are quite bold - their language is more colourful - more in the shades of Urstruly and echoboom than hamidm or bulleya.

However, the courage and bravery of Pakistani writers ends where Islam starts. I have yet to see any Pakistani journalist say anything critical of Islam; the closest anyone would come to is the criticism of the Mullahs, but Islam itself is untouchable.

Why don`t you people understand these things? If in the name of Muslims (or third world) you are bent upon fighting USA/UK/India (and don`t forget China) then you must be strong, mentally, economically, politically. Today Mullahs and intellectuals like you have confused the Muslim world to the extent that they are not only fighting the west but fighting amongst themselves too. They don`t have any positive argument of their own. This has hampered their economic progress and have been alienated in the comity of nations. Even they are isolated amongst themselves, eg Iran has its own agenda, Saudis have their own, Pak has its own. Then even within these nations their is no unity, eg their are Shias, Kurds, Saudis, Muslims of African origin(darfur), Mohajirs, Balochis and what not...!

If you want to help Muslims (at least in Pak) then work for the stoppage of sermonizing on the part of Mullahs and leave religion for the people to follow as they like.

hamidm/bj: Let me be politically incorrect, and say that echoboom deserves the zero rating that blocks out his posts. Reason:

1. The man blankets out posts written by other posters with his lengthy cuts and pastes, often deliberately when he sees something written that contradicts his insane claims. If echoboom has been silenced for the past few weeks, then other posters have been given a chance to have their posts remain on the first page for a while longer.

2. The abuses that he adds on top of his posts, which are his contribution - I wonder if he has ever addressed some individual in real life as a ``kutta`` as he routinely does from the safety of the internet.

3. His post the bjkumar helpfully posted for makes it appear as if it is written by him, when in fact it is almost certainly some cut and paste that he has put here without attribution.

Beej, Masadi is like the Baby-Eating Bishop (Blackadder fame) and should not be banned or put up for the inquisition. This will only give weight to his claims and make him more paranoid. So for his sake and for our sake he should not be banned.

Masadi, way to go man. Show them all what you are made of and really educated the great unwashed of chowk. They need it more than you right now.
