chennai,
.... the shia-sunni conflict in Pakistan is between the exalted ulema-i-karam (like the joker of lal masjid) on both sides and their suicidal (shia) and homicidal (sunni) followers - the vast majority of common people do not care about the shia/sunni differnce .............. it is essentially a fight between for power between the bearded fools on both side that can be fixed by banning facial hair and outlawing the lota ............
.......... as ylh pointed out, some of the most popular leaders in pakistan including jinnah and bhutto were shias .........
........ to give you a personal example: my sister had been married four five years before we found out that her husband was a shia of sorts when we went to his mamoon`s funeral and found his family wailing over some folks who had been killed fourteen hundred years ago ........... the poor mamoon was forgotten completely forgotten !

We forget that the US has been making Pakistan a scapegoat.
Here we go again..Farzana being an apologists for jihadis`r`us...Pakiland wasn`t exactly a reluctant participant...they were fully on board with it...what about all the money and weapons they got? And what about the paki government actively encouraging islamic fundamentalism among it`s own populace in an effort to produce the jihadis who would fight their fight in kashmir and a`stan?

a real reform to a society is when it accepts something that contradicts its long-held tenets because they make no sense or are nonsense. its hardly a ``reform`` if some changes are done by citing some obscure religious text couplets as a basis. that is merely some kinda adjustment.
turkey insisting on scularism is a real reform. malaysians women getting educated and being in workforce (almost always in hijab) is not reform.

[…the comic sight of the bearded Maulana Abdul Aziz fleeing in a burqa is proof that this episode was mere puppet theatre.]
Yun to hum jaante zannat ki haqueeqat lekin
Dil ko behlane ka, Ghalib khayal achchhaa hai!
Khair!
Sometimes, I do not know who to blame more – the beards or the “intellectuals” who resolutely look away from serious problems – pooh-poohing what the whole world can see – and hoping that it is all just a bad dream which will simply disappear once people “wake up”! Dr. Hoodbhoy is an exception, of course!
Also...
Without the slightest intent to absolve those at the top (who allowed this outrage to continue and build up), I would like to take a moment to offer my condolences to the family members of Pakistani security forces – the “piyadas” – who laid down their lives to (for all practical purposes, conduct the first open) fight against the scourge of religious fundamentalism long brewing in Pakistan. Those “piyadas” are the true heroes of Pakistan. Actions like theirs go a long way toward establishing the secular credentials of individual citizens of that country – certainly a lot farther than the meaningless words – never reflecting the reality – mouthed by wily dead men of long ago!

Hamid:
I have been out of weed for quite a while now ...... wouldn`t mind a puff though.
You say:
``...the vast majority of common people do not care about the shia/sunni differnce..``
And then you go ahead and also say:
``.... my sister had been married four five years before we found out that her husband was a shia of sorts when we went to his mamoon`s funeral and found his family wailing over some folks who had been killed fourteen hundred years ago ........... the poor mamoon was forgotten completely forgotten !.....``
So, I conclude that your family does not belong to ``the vast majority of common people``?! Hmmm, should have listned to masadi - your three car garage does indeed make you and your pan spitting grandma `power elites`.

Achi Khasi post likhtay likhtay apni dandi marnay say baaz na ana. Words become meaningful or meaningless if people choose to follow them... so even old words of dead men can and will come alive.
Khair... that is a long discussion.
Events have shown two things:
1. ISI and the Pakistan Army created these fellows.
2. ISI and the Pakistan Army can do away with them with relative ease as well.

Clarification : that is not Khasi as in namard. That is Khaasi from Khas or special or good.

#212 Manto, my permanent dear
One of the tests of real leadership is that real leaders can distinguish right from wrong and try to stop their populations from going the wrong way, using all their powers - including their powers of persuasion.
Right and wrong are common sense issues - one does not need to be ``religious`` to distinguish between the two.
I have a theory on the ``people choose to follow`` angle also - you are free to agree or disagree.
People - as in the large bodies of huddled poor, uneducated masses - have an instinctive sense which tells them whether a leader means what he (or she) is mouthing. And people ``choose to follow``, or otherwise, based on that instinct.
Just a theory, mind you! You are free to develop your own.

You forgot to clarify that your ``baaz`` does not refer to a hunting bird not does ``ana`` refer to any interactors using that name. :)

but your reputation as a jihadi breeding ground will stay with you for a long time..no amount of ad buys in the NYT can change that...pakis are going to be looked upon as potential terrorists for a long time to come...
karma finally caught up with your jihadi dogma...

True, ISI had a role in promoting the fundamentalists (for short-term political gain) but saying that the institution has the power to rule the beast of fundamentalism is not borne out by facts.
Also, fundamentalism is growing in many other lands - Pakistan is just the (main) example for now.

I find that you and a couple of other Hindustanis have quite deep understanding of our (Pakistani) society and its religious ethos.I usually do not give out character certificates but I think you, Dost Mitter, Kaalchakra and Folio (when he is not angry) are oK. Rest of your countrymen and lot of my own fellow countrymen need rabbies shots.

But BJkumar... I realised a long time ago that ``opinions`` formed on lack of knowledge are fickle. So this may stick... or you may wish it so... but it does not affect my life one bit :).
Also... in my opinion those fine words are better applied to the other wily old dead man... whose supposed ideology is even more ignored... if you think about it.
So your theory may just have something in it.. it is the application that is the problem clearly.

Majumdar writes <<< Didn`t he make a Hindu his first law minister, a Ahmedi his Foreign Minister (right???) >>>
Sure and we have Condoleeza Rice and Colin Powell, and don`t forget Hamid`s gardener who sends his kids off to Harvard. Bird droppings when a mountain of horse s*** reveals otherwise...
GT #211, don`t trivialize the concept of the power elite, rather please explain what happened to your self imposed exile from Chowk. Is it open season posting for echo now or you couldn`t control yourself?
