Ah, memories, memories...
Attique Shafaat...what a fine gentleman!
He was my batch mate at NED--so down to earth and so ahead of his peers.
One big reason why Pakistan does not produce good engineers lies in our culture: a culture of looking down at people working with their hands. Attique Shafaat would give a finger salute to that sick culture every single day. When his classmates would prefer solving second order differential equations, the purpose of which they would not comprehend, Attique Shafaat would tinker with guts of cars and would devise practical solutions to problems multinational corporations spend millions on.
Attique did not live too far from where I lived. He lived in a house that his father built by his own hands, with help from Attique and his brother. And what a beautiful house it was--his father called it 'Karol Bagh'.
After graduating from NED University Attique worked for PIA Precision Engineering for a while. A mutual friend tells me Attique Shafaat currently lives in Canada. Lucky Canada!

Dear Namkeen,

You should find a way to San Jose ... it will be a memorable event.

Here is some trivia about the oldest engineering institutions in the Indo-Pak subcontinent -

Guindy, 1794
Roorkee - 1847
College of Engineering Pune, 1854
Bengal Engineering College, 1856
NED (NadirShaw Eduljee Dinshaw) University, 1921

Ras,

This is amazing, a pak engineering college, established in 1921 hasn't got alumni association in the US. This is an amazing insight into teh pak mind set. In India, even the local govt colleges have several alumini associations in the US. The good old REC in kerala has five associations in the US alone apart from one in each city in India.

This is a window to the pak mind where having studied in the same college, for 4 to 5 years at a formative period is not an adequate frame to create long standing identity for the pakistanis.

Well well, jinnah was correct, it is only the religion and nothing else can identify a pakistani. A nation with out values, nothing local, no local culture, no nothing other than what is in the book.

The local politicians of Karachi and the national politicians in Islamabad have destroyed the quality of NED University. This must not be allowed and those NEDians who gather in this gathering must resolve to bring back the dignity and status of this premier university of Pakistan.

I certainly remember his name and do recall seeing him on campus. I graduated in '85 and was there during that time.

Are you an NEDian?

yes.....they were sponsored for the Annual solar car rally in australia, but that was a bad experience for them....Long story.

...in the end , they had to cut short the rally, and return
leaving the rally half-way.

even then they were at about 67-69 Postion out of 130-140 participants...

Attique Shafaat is mentioned in - History of the Electric Automobile: Hybrid Electric Vehicles By Ernest Henry Wakefield

Page 227 - 228 describes Attique Shafaat and also have pictures of his automobile - The Solar Samba was the name of the car.

To read about it you can use Google Books as this book is a part of the library. You can also find it on SAE website - http://www.sae.org/technical/books/R-187
