ana, that's because we proudly confer the honorary "Hindu" status on to anyone who is not an absolute loony leftist or some brand of a commie. Why, Pakistanis may object, but when Stuka is not listening, we even call him a Hindu. Of course, none of us will ever tell him that. :)

mohar: arrey ghussa phoonk dey! :)
My question is why is it the Indian left and the Hindu right? As if there are no other Indians who are rightists? George Fernandes kya centrist hai re?
Just curious, as to the rest, not being Indian, I cannot comment too much. Only to say that I do not believe, unlike some people, that the NRI's here have no say in how their country runs, or that they are neo-colonialists. Mohar, from what I understood of the article, it is not the writer's intent to accuse aap jaisay NRI's of colonialism, but to criticize those within the country of harboring thoughts about resident Indians not working hard enough as did the British. Which is not entirely fair. Nothing wrong with emulating anyone's good strong work ethic though, be they RI's or NRI's.

Mohar, beijing has had 2 decades to prepare for this olympics. THE NRI conventions are a relatively new phenomenon in a country where the infrastructure is still catching up to the growth

Mohar, I think the one problem the NRI's have is their insistence on what 'works". The anti-nehruvian or anti-gandhian voices are actually coming more out of India than outside. Most NRI's that left in teh 60's and 70's had and wanted the idyllic view of the motherland as a sleepy backwater, docile, corrupt place. It made the leaving more palatable. Even after decades abroad they still talked about teh chaach they drank on the charpai in their village and the civlity and calmness of it all. They loved and love gandhi and nehru.
Well guess what..it wasn;t the NRI that woke India up. It was the residents of India. It took a balance of payment crises to get the collective heads out of the asses. All you see now is merely a repurcussion on a cultural and economic level from that foresight in 1991.
So it is the Indian that needs to be celebrated. the NRI deserves it too..but as a supporting castmember in this bollywood blockbuster.

Beijing is hosting the Olympics next year... and here in Delhi - a small assembly of couple hundred NRIs completely shuts down the lives of the residents... or so Mr Intellectual is saying... :)
If that is true - why blame the NRI?... if with all long hours and hard work - we can't have our capital city host a small time convention [which brings billions in investments and what not] - then what's wrong with the picture?... where have we gone wrong?... why are we blaming the NRI?

[...Who celebrates such enterprise and initiative? Who offers this person an award for his commitment? Who celebrates this resident Indian?..]
Nobody... that exactly is the point the NRI is trying to make... that the indian system, as it stands today, does not reward enterprise and initiative... which is why despite long hours of work on part of indians - the country is not going anywhere...
It's very simple message... But here we have the author actually out to shoot the messenger... :) because to Mr Intellectual, it smells of colonialism... his own people are smelling like colonialists... how scr@@ewed up is that?... :)

We can all join with saimashah and chalta: Resident Indian, you are doing well. Keep the good work.
(Leftists and JNU types will complain, which is a good thing.)

This is just a knee-jerk reaction - chest-beating about nothing, typical of arm-chair "intellectuals " dime a dozen
in india...
If everybody in india is working hard and yet country is going nowhere - then obviously things are not working efficiently... the system is broken at multiple levels... everybody knows that... so what exactly is the problem if anybody is suggesting a way out?...
NRI has an obligation to say the way he sees things - he is literally putting the money where his mouth is... and it is working to some extent... Except for the habitual whiners - people in general are actually listening...
for one - nothing else has worked so far, economically speaking: gandhism, nehruism, socialism, commie-ideas - nothing has worked.... and here are sons of the soil who have worked hard in totally alien lands and made it big... obviously they have got quite a few things right... so why not listen to what they have to say?... how does that hark back to the days of colonialism?... how stupid can you get when you accuse your own people with sins of colonialism?.... :)

I don't understand what the writer wants to convey. If the goal is to rejoice the arrival of the Indian, then so be it. Go Indian!!!
It still will not change the amount of remittances coming into the country, the amount of knowledge that is pervasive now on a cross border basis. The amount of sheer capital inflows, the amount of policy changes that have worked in favor of India just in the last 5 years because of NRI's.
One can celebrate both..independent and together.
