"President is already facing an uphill task of managing the two arch rivals; i.e Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif besides a possible challenge from the Supreme Court to his nomination as a presidential candidate, such a move could gravely harm the cause of Gen. Musharraf to seek re-election, commented a senior political analyst."(author)

By God I did not know that -- tnanks for the scoop!

Now here another juicy scoop -- "Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, had suggested that Musharraf's wife, Sebha, could be a backup candidate for the presidency if Musharraf was ruled ineligible to run. He defended the notion as “traditional” in Pakistani politics. “I don't know if it would be acceptable to the president or his wife,” Azim said. "

of course they will jump at the idea -- Son Bilal will be the the backup Coass with Chaudhrani Hussain as the backup Pangkha lady for the backup Queen Sehba -- with king Musharraf in a Nursing Home for the mentally challenged -- and the Chaudhry brothers, will perform as the back up Court Jesters in the Queen's zanaan khana.

It is sheer blackmail. Terms and conditions of the service of the CJ are determined by the constitution which they are not in a position to amend at present.

Everybody else has term limits -- only dictators are for EVER!

Should we even dignfy this stupid proposal by a stupid craven bankteller with an intellectual discussion -- jesus christ.

If the CJ is smart, he should agree to convene a full bench (at JI's request) to hear JI's petition against the eligibility of PM, and the bench can rule in favor of the palintiff.
This will force PM to dissolve the NA; that would be the end of any scheme being cooked up to limit the CJ's term, for the time being at least.

However, this threat will remain in future even after PM is out of the picture. Let us not kid ourselves; neither PPPP nor PML-N are any more fond of an independent judiciary than is the current govt. The bill will likely be resurrected, and could get approved as well. Reason: the judiciary itself, escpecially the HC judges. After all, this is exactly how NS got rid of Sajjad Ali Shah.

They are all naked in the nApAk hammam of the land of the pure; the judges, themselves, are no exception.

CJP should definitely convene the full bench ...

I am not sure why the Supreme Court has suddenly gone very silent.

where is the pakistani hugo chavez?!

btw, at least all this has exposed musharraf as being a dictator like any other despite all his tall claims of moral superiority. he is trying everything to stay in absolute power.

his fall will come one day and when it does i fear it won't be pretty...

Sehba ma'am as a back up candidate! Not much different from Bihar in India, one supposes, where Laloo Yadav enthroned his illiterate wife as the CM when he found himself ineligible for the post.

Thanks God! enough of judicial activism!
I agree with the points - about CJ taking intrest in matters which are 'non-isssues' like the traffic problems but comeon, he crossed his line with the missing persons case.
I hope he gets retricted to couple of years ; he met President's Chief of Staff today - would be good if he joins the camp .

perhaps the future saviour of pakistan is already born and studying in a madrassah somewhere; no not those kind of lal masjid neo-kharijite madrassahs but the traditional types where people still go to learn knowledge....

who knows eh?

You - Naqshbandi and other critics- of Pakistani politics are over reacting and imagining that the Sky is Falling. Nothing is going to happen and life will continue and its future will correct itself.

If you step back and don't get excited - the future will be fine!

okay - another blow to Imran Khan and so-called Punjabi - Pakhtoon Alliances - Article 63 ( of dis-qualification ) will not apply to the election of the president a statement from the election commission . This shows the meeting between CJ and President's Chief of Staff's Meeting worked .
I wish Mushraff atleast 10-15 years of president-ship - hes the man . At a same time - it seems all of punjabis for ethinic reasons and phatans for religious reasons are up against Mushraff.

plus the Bibi - MQM alliance apart from (okay half of the PML Q ) faction is more then enough for the president's elections and a future alliance to form a government.

#14 Posted by IB,

I haven't heard the news yet but if this is the EC's interpretation, it would be correct because the President is the Head of the State, and not its employee.

However, it is quite another matter that the only thing which makes musharraf the sitting 'president' in the first place is the 17th amendement, which is against the spirit of the constitution and thus illegal, and may be thrown out by SC if/when challenged. That would make musharraf guilty of treason and facing the gallows.

All depends ...
