Alright, i might have been generalising but it is not over generalisation.

Class is a chaging concept only in the eyes of the politicians who have to sell this idea. BUt reality is that class has remained fixed for many many generations.

The first WWar wiped out the landed gentry and middle class of the Kipling kind. SInce then they have been making a slow recovery - by taking in new blood.

This notion of class is something which you cannot avoid it has been there ever since man started civilising himself. Even the Soviet Union (a socialist country), and China (a communist country) have retained essentials of the class culture from before their revolutions. 70 odd years of Marx didnot eliminate it.

DashDot: You are generalizing way too much. WASPS are people, not wasps whose brains are basically programmed and therefore one can generalize.

"Class" is also a changing concept that is not strictly related to economic situation - if you want to generalize, try "values".

Its a class issue...this is fact you cannot argue against. I have seen it happen for the last 30 odd years all over the place and have first hand knowledge of my friend in the USA. Till the parents of the girl (fairly upper professionals - were unhappy at their daughter marrying a desi, but when they found out that this guy had a background which was no less than theirs they seemed happy. In fact when I went to meet them, I was given the third degree...if you are used to the desi questioning you can handle this with ease).

Its the compatibility of class....race don't matter after a certain point. The WASPs are very much bothered about it, but they do not voice it out like we do, but expect their kids to do the right thing - play the field with lesser mortals but settle down with a nice partner. This is the biggest difference between the two sets - one voice it out loud and donot trust their kids, the other do not voice it in much the same way. BUt the sentiments are identical.

hindus in particular should strongly oppose arranges marriage based on their mysthological scriptures. look at all the arranges marriages which Bhishma performed and bad genes which were propagated (story of amba-ambalika etc and gandhari).

Re: # 22 this is the case with most whites (european, american or otherwise). They stick to their own kind. It keeps it all within their system

You have a point but Jang is right - it should be left to actual parties to marry with some fedbacks from parents... But the problem in socities like India is that there is hardly any opportunities for both sexes to meet and mingle safely and cordially and figure it out... college does provide a venue but it's still very limited...
