"...my hope is with them n the higher judiciary..if they can some how ensure free n fair election...things will move forward inshAllah"
Forget free and fair elections this time. You need the PPP to split before the elections. It will help a lot in the longer run.

That's my reading too... moderation has left paki politics long time ago... political parties are moribund... civil society is way too weak and there is a very combustible mixture of poverty and islamism building up around the the country...
It would be diffcult for a functioning democracy to emerge out of this situation...

Unfortunately pakistani society (factions in it) have fallen into an existential struggle. Unfortunately, I see our furure headed towards that of Somalia rather than Iran. But miracles do happen though.

Abu Safwaan: Yaar, to be honest, after listening to HamidM and Zeemax talk, I think there is no chance of democracy in Pakistan. The key ingredient of democracy is Moderation, and I am not coming across much of that. Not talking Chowk..Talking BB versus Shujaat, NS versus Musharraf etc.

stuka...if u like a stable neighbor which might be good 4 ya than root for democracy....Army will always want animosity w/ india cause thas how they justify there outrageous budgets which r suppose to be for weapons for india but instead r used for bmw's n real estate. N if u get OFF on chaos like arjun does than root for the Army but remember if the house next door is burning than at the least smoke will be cumbersome

Urstruly / HamidM:
Guys I have a simple question? Who should we Indians root for? The Pakistan Army or the Islamists? The former has pretty much set strategy in place from the get go. The latter has implemented it. I am totally cofused???

Swat and Maingora are no waziristan. I have been there. The terraine is just impossible and perfect place for ambushes. At some places even weapons are not required to ambush. Just roll a boulder down to the hairpin road and it will do all the work for you. I think NaPak fouj will be butchered mercilessly there.

#53 Posted by Urstruly,
Yes ... but Swat army operation is a huge mistake. It will be a bigger mistake than Waziristan. Fazlullah and company are agitators (blocking roads etc) and not militants, but now they've turned them into ones. There are other militants there who were blowing up CD shops etc but the army will lump all in the same basket and unite all the various groups. Then, Swat is connected to Chitral with a narrow mountain pass link to Afghanistan (where Usama Bin Laden himself is said to be based) so no shortage of reinforcements and supplies from Afghanistan. Then there're the mountains and plenty of terrain for prolonged guerrilla warfare which the army can't fight except with airpower ... but still won't win ... and it goes on and on ...
I think a 'proper' civil war in settled areas is now beginning. Good!

On BB's corruption - you guys kept her hubby jailed for a decade but didn't prove any case, as far as we know... so why bother?
Besides - most of you pakis here in chowk are broods of senior army and civilian officers in paki gov't - I am sure, your respective fathers have all stolen from cookie jar, in their individual capacity - otherwise, you wouldn't be sitting here in west today... so what's the big deal - you are all thieves anyway... :)

Yarr Zee...it'll take US airforce 10 min to blow up fazal and the entire north ...u can't match them in killing....waziris have a right to defend..but there is no contest. Calmer heads need to come to the table and realize that you can't conquer a people with self-esteem....if they could than IRAQ and afghanistan wouldnt be the thorn in the eyes...n that is merely the reason that US doesnt bomb EVERYONE to oblivion because they surily can ....they are stupid sometimes but they aren't all the time cause there r still some sane ppl left in this country...

Re: # 51 Zeemax
One thing that you didn't notice which has uncanny similarity with the situation in 1971 tragedy. During that time East India company ki Najaiz aulad used to describe the oppressed people who had risen up against their oppression as "kaalay bangali", "chotay bangali", "Machli khor bengali" and what not to describe the citizens of Pakistan, and now the same harami use the phrases like "unwashed masses", "beardos", "chagozay" and what not. But finally a time has come that East India Company must wrap up for good.
