This more or less sums it up.... brilliant satire. Some times I am amazed that indians are actually more aware about us than we are. You talk about taking us physically- my dear I wont be surprise that after some time you will find people inviting indians to take over Pakistan.

People will not rise-that is the sad part. For people to rise collectively, they should be led by organized political parties. These parties already are siding with the military junta. I am tired of the word "bloody revolution"- it simply is not happening as the conditions for collective action are simply not there. Just raising rhetoric about a revolution wont make it happen. Musharraf is here to stay and he will stay here because sold out politicians who command street power are siding with him. A large part of urban middle class though resenting Musharraf will never come out. Middle class just talks and seldom indulges in activism.

I spare no effort to emphasize the sad truth that a corrupt westernized ruling elite will never let go of common citizen of Pakistan from their talons of oppression. THe merciless massacre of 1500-2000 school children in Islamabad was indictive of the fact that to what extent they will go to maintain the status quo of lawlessness and oppression.

But this latest attrocity by this ruthless class upon the people of Pakistan should be cause for celebtaion for all those citizens who love Pakistan. It is a victory for the people of Pakistan that the first brick of the wall of oppression and deceit that napak fouj and this corrupt elite had tried to confine Pak society in has collapsed. All their efforts to legitimize a corrupt and vicious dictator have failed. NOw it is clear as bright sunlight where nationally and internationally each and every individual stand. Thos countries and individuals who support this murderer are on one side and the people of Pakistan are on the other.

Good question arjun. Yeah he should write another one and lets see how he defends his father this time. May be he will say that all the bomb blasts were being done by CJ and Musharraf had to remove him so that Pakistani forces are safe from extremist attacks. May be that Judiciary can be independent only in western countries- here we do not have appropriate political environment to take such a risk. After all we are cattle and donkeys and we should be abused with absolutely no recourse. I am sure that Mr Bilal Musharraf will take on similar line of "defence"

Today is the sad day in our history. I really do not know why we are wasting our energy on comparisons between NS, BB and Musharraf. Why in the first the question is being put up that who is a better alternate among these? The central question is that Judiciary has been purged and with that common man has lost recourse in case his fundamental rights are usurped. Pakistan has become effectively a police state with no semblance of any justice for the people. For any one who supports this scenario and endorses Musharraf on the pretext that he is a viable option or for that matter liberalism’s pragmatic hope unfortunately does not even know what liberalism is all about. We Pakistanis are made to understand by the elite of this country that the only way of living in this country is to keep ourselves depoliticized and turn our eye blind to the question of fundamental rights. Just live our lives and pray that we do not have an encounter with law enforcement agency-because if we do, there is absolutely no hope for our survival. The recourse is no longer there. The stupid argument about Jihadism should not be debated- judiciary was not purged because of that but to merely extend the rule of an individual who regrettably is the worst of all our rulers.

The idea is not to invent politicians who are paragons of virtue who would lead Pakistanis to green pasteurs that the Jinnah promised. (Such an invention would be a first and well-deserving of a Nobel prize for Pakistan.) The idea is to allow the political process to take place, to let the politicians mature and most importantly, enable the grassroots as their support. The idea is - yes, the politicians (like anybody else) need to have controls on them but the controls should be through the will and exercise of the will of the masses - not by the whims of a bunch of men in khaki, who, in the final analysis - are every bit as susceptible to corruptions of power as anybody else but feel far less accountability.

What Mushy has done is one of the most cowardly things that any Pakistani khaki has ever done. And it is dishonest for the khakis to project themselves as saviors - the record is quite clear that they only try to save their own little asses!

The khaki mafia has dropped its pretenses for the moment, that's all!

The world does not know whether it should denounce in vain or it should avert eyes out of resignation at this repeat performance of the familiar nanga naach routine. Both the exercises appear futile.

But how long will this quiet and peace endure? If emergency rule is bad so has been the political rule in Pakistan. We can play the blame game as long as we like but the true quandry in which Pakistan is trapped is that there is a scarcity of honest leaders. Nawaz Sharif and Bhutto had their chance to establish the rule of law in the country but they squandered it for selfish and unlawful gains. Who is there on the political scene after them. The Jihadis and mullahs can only create chaos and lawlessness but they can not salvage the country. They are rabble rousers; whenever they get an opportunity they declare "Islam is in danger."
If, for the sake of argument, Musharraf succeeds in putting the Genie back in the bottle, who is there after him? If he is not removed by violence, he is destined to die a natural death in due time. Who is there after him? Another General! Or, another BeNazir or Nawaz Sharif!
It is better to give the governance of this country on contract to some external secular country for a time and allow some healthy institutions to take root in the meantime. Or, better still, invite the United Nations to govern the country.
