Thanx, Suchorita. Your reaction reflects a positive mind aiming at objectivity and optimism. Yes, we can do better to 'spice up' history lessons by putting life and color to the dull pages of class books. This is a nice suggestion and I wish decision makers took due note of it for the sake of our younger generation.

dont we have all the sundry politicians wearing khadi, dressed like the generic freedom-fighter?

Very well and thoughtfully written... Your write up made me sit back and think if we have really lost the mentality to value our past and its heroes/heroines ... but what i realized was that its not really true.
I am sure, most of us still take pride in knowing about them and respecting them but we lack the pro-activity required to pass on these values to the next generation. Its our responsibility to make history lessons interesting for those younger to us ... to make its charecters real rather than a chapter required for exams ...

Re: # 1 Thank you, Manmahesh. The thinking people and the concerned ones having a world view will surely converge on this Chowk and I shall be ever eager to listen to your words of encouragement.

Thank you, Sadna. The meek shalt inherit the earth, they say. The selfless service of the humble but ideologically confident freedom fighters should never be forgotten. We usually tend to place some well-known figures on the pedestal and worship them, ignoring the thousands who sacrificed everything to make our lives better.

Sadnaji,

(school's peon)

I hope the use of the word PEON is not a snide comment on a much respected senior chowkie???

Regards

In our times, there was a Teacher's Day during which the students of the highest classes would do the role of every teacher in the school, like take that teacher's classes, sit in the principal's office, man the library etc. One student came dressed as the school's peon and did all his duties for the day includingtaking around circulars, ringing the school bell, never speaking and being barefoot most of the time! Your comment on the lesser known freedomfighters reminded me of that student who honored the school peon by being him.

Wonderful, touching, relevant ... I could use more adjectives. Yes it is very timely. I went to get Jai's dress and found that these fancy dress walahs are doing hot business. But seriously, we as parents have a responsibility to tell the children (and ourselves) of all the forgotten national heroes and heroines.
A wonderful write up. Keep it up.
