200 Taliban rebels killed in Musa Qala operation: Afghan official

KABUL (AFP) - More than 200 militants were killed in last month's major operation to retake the southern Taliban stronghold of Musa Qala, the Afghan defence ministry said Thursday.

Seventeen Taliban commanders were among the dead following the military operation to drive out the rebels who had held the small town in volatile Helmand province for 10 months, the ministry said.

"This is an assessed death toll. Now we know that over 200 Taliban were killed within the frame of operation Musa Qala," said senior defence ministry spokesman General Mohammad Zahir Azimi.

"Seventeen of them were Taliban commanders," he added, declining to provide details. At least four civilians were also killed in the fighting, he said.

Afghan military forces backed by the mainly British NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) captured the trouble-torn town in December in what they said was the year's biggest operation.

It was indeed ZAB who broke Pakistan as envisioned by Quaide Azam by making an earth-shaking amendment in the constitution to convert it into a 'Fatwa' which made the very faith of Paki Muslims questionable, requiring every Paki citizen to submit a disgraceful, absurd and humiliating affidavit (Half Nama) about his faith whenever he claims to be a Muslim. I personally have never understood why a man like Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, who despite his flaws was perhaps the most powerful and popular politician in Pakistan after Jinnah and Fatima, would do this. A less popular politician (and more religious one at that) like Khawaja Nazimuddin preferred to be booted out of the Premiership than give in on the Mullah demands against the Ahmadis - whose contributions to Pakistan and the Pakistan movement were above and beyond any of these damn mullahs.


Zulfikar Ali Bhutto himself had castigated the Jamaat-e-Islami for raising these demands during his election campaign in the 1960s. Then why did ZAB ultimately resort to such fascist measures.

I wrote an article on this http://www.chowk.com/site/articles/index.php?id=12085 called "Rest in Peace Pakistan" ... which is arguably the single most widely read article on this website with close to 60, 000 hits.

My late father who was paradoxically both a staunch Ahmadi and a Bhutto fan always felt deeply hurt but this. My father was appointed by the Ahmaddiya Jamaat in 1970 to assist Mr. Bhutto's election campaign and had become very close to Mr. Bhutto.

At the end of the day ... perhaps there is something to Asghar Khan's claim that Bhutto's agenda was to fool the people. But more than that... Zulfikar Ali Bhutto was dictated in many ways by the Saudis who had significance influence on him.

In other words... Bhutto made a scapegoat out of Pakistan's most patriotic community and his staunchest allies to please his Saudi Masters.

This is why I think Benazir Bhutto was head and shoulders above Zulfikar Ali Bhutto ... because she was a true secular liberal who did try and undo many of the wrongs committed by her father.

can somebody with an artistic bend of mind draw a picture of gandhi with a taliban towel on his head and flowing beard on his face and post it to YLH?... YLH wants throw stones at him in Eid or whatever occasion muslims throw stones at the devil...

Wah. First of all, I thought you believe that Quran could not be perverted because God himself will protect it for all times to come.

So how did this fellow Parwez manage to "pervert" the Quran? Anyone who does not agree with your traditionalist and bigoted sunni-freakery when it comes to Quran is not automatically perverting the Quran.

I'd like to see examples of how G A Parwez "perverted" the Quran ... is it because he said Quran does not mandate the Pardah .. or is it because he said Quran does not forbid music ... Is it because he challenged your 72 houris concept? Is it because he was the major force behind the amendment to Muslim Family Laws ? Is it because he said that a Muslim man cannot simply say Talaq three times and do away with his wife...? Is it because he said that a Muslim man had to pay alimony? Is it because he said that Non-muslims would not go to hell automatically? What exactly was it about Parwez really? or is it because he actually played and changed the words of the Quran in which case you will have to show us evidence.

And mind you... I am not a big fan of Parwez for many reasons but hardly anyone can dispute that he was the best thing that happened to Islamic scholarship in the last 200 years... you included.

By the way can anyone (HP, ZAK) shed some light on the Hyderabad Conspiracy Case? To my knowledge ...Bhutto jailed Wali Khan for speaking against Pakistan Movement and Quaid-e-Azam... (both charges were later proven to be fabricated through Wali Khan's lawyer Mahmud Ali Kasuri - Jinnah's old colleague and an ex-PPP leader who had left Bhutto) Now either Bhutto really believed in the honor of Quaid-e-Azam and the Pakistan movement... or he jailed these people for political vendetta and was a corrupt megalomaniac. If it was the former... one can imagine how Bhutto sb would have dealt with some self styled Jiyalas here.

It is no wonder that none of these leaders ever sent a message of condolence on Bhutto's death (unlike the death of Benazir Bhutto where every party from ANP to Jamaat-e-Islami condoled with the Bhutto family).
