Yeah,

Dalrymple mentions this in his forewod of White Mughals. Ma be this guy got inspiration from Salar Jung.

+++

Irony, U mentioned Memphestopheles on UP a few days ago. U can see a life-size statue of that fella in Salar Jung museum.

Actually I have a mirror behind it - at the right angle to see the two faces next to each other! reminds me of the fickle nature!

Coastal Andhra? Where? bandar? Vizag? - I was there towards the end of last year and early this year for a long trip - starting from Kolkutta.

VRV, I didn't know you were Telugu. Iron, the irony is that I last visited the Salar Jung museum when I was a kind, around 15 years back. I don't even remember properly what I saw.

harish - a hyderabadi ...did you go to see the Nizam's jewels in Salar Jung!

The museum itself - from I rememebr is a treasure trove. Also it has been reorganised and it makes more sense now.

One thing though I was impressed with on my last visit there - the cafeterias are very much improved and you can eat there. All of them have been taken over and tendered to retired army personnel (mostly NCO's) and the place is spic-n-span!

Yaar Iron, there are many places in Hyd which I haven't visited in a long long time. The museum, Golconda, the zoo etc. are places which I'd love to go to again :-(

Golconda - sigh! yes.

You should try all approaches to Golconda - from the artillery centre and from the graveyard of the sultans.

BTW the open-air concert centre (what mahal is that i forget) is great!

I have been through both the approaches. I liked the one from the Qutub Shahi tombs. It passes through what could have been an ancient mohalla (and still is intact). It seems a nice laidback kind of place where time stands still.

that is correct - it also groes through old golconda.

What I liked was the Biryani (yes I know Hyd is famous for it), the one you get near Mujhumjahi Market (the medical college area) and the nizami biscuits. MInd you if even for a moment think og the hygiene you would not even touch the food with a barge pole.

Yaar Iron, the problem is there with most Irani restaurants. Hygiene is not excatly a priority :-)

Right now, there are quite a few places where the Biryani is amazing. Bawarchi, Cafe Bahaar, Paradise and Hyderabad House and another place just opposite the Nampally railway station (I forget the name) serve great Biryani.
