An interesting read, albeit a bit disjointed. Nothing makes the run-of-the-mill politicians (who would be otherwise judged harsher in retrospect) into instant saints and heros like an act of getting assassinated while on job. The same happened to Mrs. Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, JFK, Abe Lincoln, etc. etc.

[Larkana has become a crowded city after her (Benazir's) death. There were people everywhere. Benazir is now remembered as a Rani, a princess and soon will turn in to the first woman Saint in Pakistan.]
For that you have to be Italian AND Catholic.
Again, the Hated Heeng-eating Hindus have got one up on you Pakis!

HP: Great article and enjoyed reading it. Ijaz Gul had mentioned a couple of weeks back a chowkie get together with you and pavocavalry and ylh and his wife in pindi, so I knew you were wandering around in Pakistan.
Things are definitely looking up in Pakistan now. Hats off to all the brave Pakistanis who stood their ground and pulled off these fantastic results in elections. Look forward to reading more of your visit later.

Arjun,
Thanks for the picture. For a long time the ilks of romair maintained that beard is permitted only for lower level military officers. Now the world knows that even generals keep beard. The old talk about a bearded general taking over pakistan appear to be very close.
The dead chapie is a professional, a doctor, and typically they do not keep beard because of hygene reasons. Now we have a doctor and a general keeping beard, and I understand that after the motto of pak army was chnaged to "jihad in the name of god" only the bearded ones get promoted.
It has been reported that now nearly 30 percent of the generals are bearded generals. The final jihadi army is going to break out any time now.

HP mian, nice read, are you back in the land of plastic shallowness i.e. USA? I'm glad your trip to the homeland turned out as fantastic as you described it, and you were able to gain greater insight into the changing spirit of the Pakistani people, that is now like a powder keg waiting to erupt against the Pakistan Army and its foreign life line, the US elite....be well my friend

He was a "jihadi" but the bomber probably just noticed the stars on the Army car and went for his kill...

What has certainly not changed is the "spirit" of the miserable Chowk Staff. I have submitted my article on the current elections which they have not published, my ilogs disappear from the front page as they are written, and the ilogs of army apologists like Leadenwinter have been hovering around the front page even though it was written back on the 9th of February. Now what kind of nonsense is this?

Sounds likes a good visit to Pakistan. HP Sahib, I was enjoying the ride along until you mentioned “8 girls”, now what kind of stupid macho nonsense is that? I am sure idiots like Masadi are chicken to castigate you for this comment, but you should have instead hired Masadi for the night. This way poor guy would have earned some US money. And yes, Lahore is a pretty darn good city. It’s only problem is that it is in Pakistan.

Excellent article but you might be little off on this:
"riving down from the Taxila museum to Jaulian, I, all of a sudden, found myself on a well paved and well maintained road. I thought the quality of the construction was due to the tourist traffic to Jaulian. But it turned out just above Jaulian, the Pak army maintains a big ammo dump. I had visited some US army dumps in New Mexico and the layout of the area looked very familiar to the missiles/nuke sites in New Mexico. Once I climbed the mountains and in Jaulian, using Binoculars, I tried to spot the entrance and climbed farther than the guide would allow me to take pictures. It appeared that there were two sites both had unmarked cars, buses and trucks parked there. Nothing would disclose that they were military sites. However, it was clear that the army was hiding something there. One can hazard many guesses but hoarding missiles and nukes next to the prime archaeological sites could only be a Pak army idea!"
Pakistan Army maintains a Heavy Mechanical Complex in Taxila. It is before the Museum and a huge building.
On the other hand, if you turn towards Dharmarajika, you drive straight to a housing colony (the paved road) which is a housing colony of a civilian project... Wapda or something. At Dharmarajika you would have gotten a better view. But I am afraid Pakistan Army is not hiding anything there.
