At a recent sports fest at LUMS, pakistan most elite managemnent school, there was a taliban stall. The poor letter writer below from dawn is concerned why teh british scholarships are not coming. Take it from me, if LUMS can be infested by the jihadis, well, you can kiss goodbye to any higher education for any one from pakistan in teh west.
Plea to British Council
EVERY year the British Council awards Chevening scholarship to a handful of Pakistani students who intend to pursue post-graduate studies in the UK. These students are selected through a highly competitive procedure spanning over many months. In 2007, the interviews of the shortlisted candidates were carried out in October/November and the result was supposed to be announced some time in January 2008.

As the pakistanis re debating the changes in islmic interpretations in turkey, the jihadis are changing the military balance in pakistan. Clearly, they have given notice that every arm of the military, the latest being the navy, is under attack from them.
This situation is a long time coming, in 1947 and at kargill, it was the tribals who took on the indian army. The paki army knws pretty well that they are no match for the tribals.
I recall that the lt general was killed by a man dressed as a begger but wearing a bomb belt and the police through out pakistan responded by chasing the beggers from the streets.
Next will be the staff cars will not have the stars on them, and they will start moving around in mufty, well not dressed as beggers.
In any case, the strategic depth is india, and they are welcome to surrender.

"Again, what deal could they strike with NS? And in return for what?"
I am presuming that Nawaz's eventual goal is Isloo not Lhor.
I think that Nawaz's conditions would be:
- US dump Musharraf, which , I think that they will, esp, after the Bush admn. is out.
- to fight the taleban/al qaida without too much active involvement of the Pak army.
In return, Nawaz might agree to cooperate in ending Jihadi infrastructure to the extent that he can. I think that Nawaz won't be against ending the support to the taleban in Afghanistan and he might be able to assure the Americans that, unlike Musharraf, he wont be playing a double game. He might be more successful with the Pak taleban at a political level than was the double-game playing Mush and his agencies.

And since when has Nawaz Sharif become the "champion" of Islamic cause in the Pakiland?
I never said he was. He's right of center, which is same as most of the Pakistani population.

Zee Zee babe! you didn't get the joke; I was refereing to.....never mind eh!
We are more alike than you think, you and me; you just don't want to admit it.
And since when has Nawaz Sharif become the "champion" of Islamic cause in the Pakiland? Or is it the same old "lesser of the evils" concept?

...their interests will be best served to strike the best deal they can with NS.
Again, what deal could they strike with NS? And in return for what?
You see, the americans had a deal with musharraf re GWOT in return for guaranteeing his continued rule - and even musharraf couldn't deliver anything significant and failed miserably while being the COAS, President and de-facto P.M ... all at the same time.
What could NS do for the americans when he is none of the above? And what could the americans do for NS when he himself does not want the center and already has Punjab in his pocket?
I had referred to an article in the current issue of Friday Times titled "Well played, Mr. Sharif". It can't be copy/pasted because TFT is a subscription site (I get the print edition). It clearly shows NS strategy.

". What do you suppose they can do?"
I don't know, that's why I asked you. But I think that their interests will be best served to strike the best deal they can with NS. Doodh mein dhulaa tau vo bhi nahiN; in the long run, Americans will only benefit from having a popular Punjabi leader on their side.

If one were to ask one billion plus Muslims to check one of the following as a definition of Islam:
a)Individual responsbility God to use one's mental faculties to distinguish between right and wrong and to do the right thing;
b)submission to the will of Allah;
c) believe in one god and no other god and Mohammad being his last prophet; and
d) Strict monotheism;
how many do you think will answer (a).
PS: Straight answer please. We get enough of the indirect answers from our hindu friends.

akcheema bhai, I think it would be more intellectually suited for you to contemplate upon kangaroos hopping around with baby kangaroos in their pouches while dodging speeding vehicles at the same time, than to solve the mysteries of the universe!

What do you think the Americans will/can do to prevent NS from benefiting from the coming chaos?
Absolutely nothing. What do you suppose they can do?
Re 'coming chaos?', the Pakistani nation has seen chaos to chaos and crisis to crisis. I don't believe this chaos is going to be any bigger than any of the preceding ones.

As I see in the Muslim world, the first "murtid" was Mohammed himself, after leaving the doctrine of his ancestors. I have merely followed the "Sunnah".
By the way, that is exactly what a wahabbi friend from Multan said when I met him after almost 8 years, married to his niece/granddaughter via a cousin - it is even too complex for me to workout! - who was only 12 at the time of "nikah"; him being 34. And he is a University graduate from an "educated" family!
What hope do the rest of them have.
No it is not my nickname; however, it would appear "the word" is out!
