Cheema sahib,
I dont think Turkey is trying to back to the 7th century even the Welfare Party isn't. About Pak there are clearly two streams of thought- one wants to make it a Western style liberal secular democracy, the other wants a democracy patterned on Islamic ideals but not necessarily always a Talibanist one, although some Islamicists wud no doubt want a Taliban style Islamic democracy.
Ultimately, the people's will shud prevail.
Regards

as Gill Sahib has said in the last paragraph; reckon believe in whatever in your daily (personal) life but don't make it grounds for establishment of legal codes etc. It has failed so often and as a nation, where has it got us? Then we make excuses by saying things like "we haven't had REAL Islam@ and the like.
What exactly is this REAL Islam that could not withstand the test of time? No one knows. Re-interpretation is a joke; who re-interprets and based on what criteria?
Let us make laws based on the demands put to us by the 21st century, not the 7th; PLEASE!!

Mr. Gill pretty interesting. However I think religion is something very personal and it ought not be altered. Those who wish to bang their heads on the ground 5 times a day in supplication to their faith and belief can continue doing so, as can rabid Hindoos like ajeya or arjun_5 continue drinking their daily doses of urine, if they wish to. The only problems occur when religion gets intermingled with the running of daily affairs of state. Clearly state and religion need to be separated. Imagine if in one country praying 5 times a day becomes mandatory and in an other you are forced to gag on daily doses of urine as a part of religious ritual. No wonder all through history people feigning to fight for sundry religions one way or another have caused the greatest havoc to humanity.

Yih to aap ne pig ka 'nijaspan' ka bataya he. Kia aap ke khayaal mein 'nijaspan' aur 'harram' ham-mehni hein? Harram to phir masjid bhi he, insan bhi, aur purest of the liquids, shirab bhi. To kia woh sab bhi nijas hein?
For your information the root of 'harram' is 'hurmat', as far as I know Arabic. Its a very tricky term which cannot perhaps be translated in Urdu or English. I see a neerest equivalent of it in Punjabi whereby we call something having religious significance as 'Bhaari'.
Amin Ahsan Islahi has tried to explain it as 'tabooed' in his 'Tadabar-ul-Quran'. Wallah aalam bissawwab.

Hamidm Sahib:
In my vegetarian diet, I also throw in indian style chicken tikka kebab, iranian style kobideh, and chinese schezuan style shrimps, string beans with beef to my diet. Oh I was tricked into eating frog legs in Taiwan, and enjoyed it too, till my Chinese host told me that I was eating frog legs.
Zeeman sahib, here, is ripping you apart. After all you and I endured Romairs insults on our support for Musharraff. Someone who could not see his good friend suffer, prompted me to suggest.
Just think, a vegetarian pathan, and a thinking pathan on top. No one can call you heeng eating hindoo.

Eat what you like; just don't get upset. Even up to a year ago, I used to say exactly that.
Then I realised that there is nothing special about humans; we are all evolved animals, just differently evolved, that is all! This idea of "Ashraf-ul-makhlookaat" in the Koran, or "I have given MAN dominion over other living beings" in the Bible are the reason we think the way we think.
Wether we like it or not, religion and us go back a long way!
