The sub-continent lost its golden opportunity in 1947 to put behind the religious differences and create an educated forward looking secular elite that can control and guide the "unwashed masses". Anyway, that's history.

Going forward, EU model can only be repeated in our part of the world if the underlying units have common values - secular institutions, market oriented economy, law and order for common person. This is absolutely necessary for corporations to relocate/migrate from one state to another and managers/employees to have equal opportunity and protection in ALL parts of the union.

As you know, sticking point will be secular constitution and implementation of it. Is India perfect on this score? No (remember 1984, 2002?). Is it aheard of Pakistan by miles? Absolutely.

Until then, we will be abusing, cursing and be careful of each other like enemies with break here and there of peaceful gestures, sports events or cultural events.

And as you said, common man's misery will continue since valuable resources are being wasted.
