you look at these generals Islam :--
Zia ul Haq did sentry guard duty while ZAB slept in his guest house room in Multan (Chishti-Betrayals of Another Kind)
In 1976 Zia in a Darbar of soldiers called ZAB the greatest blessing of Almighty Allah for Pakistan.
I interviewed Gen Tajammul the general praised by his Indian opponent Gen Lachman Singh for his bravery , and he said Zia was a hypocrite , not as religious as portrayed.

It has been estimated that Afghanistan's drug economy and non drug contraband smuggling economy are 5 times the size of all foreign aid to Afghanistan.
Now who is benefitting from this. All Afghans are forced to invest in Dubai/UAE or Pakistan.Or they are building shopping malls or expensive houses in Kabul or Herat or Mazar.
Dubai is the so called Mr Clean benefitting from the Haawala Mafia transactions in USD and from Afghan drug mafia. All major drug deals are made by Dubai middle men , mostly Iranian drug mafia who fled Iran after the Shah was booted out of Iran in 1979.
Any guaranteed US interest bonds in Afghanistan with no questions asked can make this drug or smuggling money white and can bring this money in main stream.Already more than 10 Afghan banks have been established and they are making big bucks on lotteries and on 5 % interest.Any bond floated by USA in Afghanistan would have high credibility and bring huges investment. It will go a far away in ensuring stability. All Pashtun financial economy operates on interest rates higher than any Hindu Mahajan ever charged after all.

I guess the present govt of A’stan does not want anything to do with Pakistan. Afterall pakistanis produced “taleban”…. The militia which occupied A’stan.
As a pakistani you are angered if American set foot in your country…. I guess people of A’stan have similar hatred towards the creators of taleban.

“they disarmed tribal militias without using force”…. That’s the way most A’stan battles are fought. Count how many times Abdul Rashid Dostum has changed sides.
Just because few people fought taleban…. It does make taleban a democratic force.

The latest US policy on pakistan is the right one. The paki army is not ready to fight the tribals, they have oined the word, paki taliban, essentially to mean that they do not go and fight in afghanistan, It is the foreigners who are fighting in afghanistan and not the pakis.
Now the Us is targeting foreigners in tribal areas by their hellfire missiles. many pakis are also getting killed as colateral damage. If thius campaign is successful, then the paki taliban will not host the foreigners and it will improve the security situation in afghanistan.
If this is not correct, and if the pakis are in fact fighting in afghanistan, well then, it will be B52 time for the tribals. Then it will be real challenge for the pak army as the tribals will move to cities to escape the B52s.
The total surrender of teh pak army is not very far, now they have only surrendered in the tribal areas.
It is interesting to note that according to the pak army, if a foreigner is killed, then it is not hellfire, it is the explosives stored in the house that has killed the people.
Lying through their teeth is another aspect of pak military training, and it is pathetic to see the serving generals telling such lies.

Watch out my dear pakistanis, another suicide attack is round the corner.
from dawn of today
Pakistan, US blamed for attack in S. Waziristan
By Our Correspondent
WANA, March 17: A pro-government militant commander accused the Pakistani and US forces on Monday of carrying out Sunday’s missile attack on a compound of a house in the Shah Nawazkot area of South Waziristan. The attack left nine people, inclu/ding some foreigners, dead.
Maulvi Nazir’s spokesman Mita Khan, who won the support of the government after launching an armed campaign against Uzbek militants, termed the attack a joint operation of Pakistani and US forces.
“We believe that Pakistani security forces and Americans had carried out the attack,” Mr Khan said, adding that the ‘Mujahideen’ would soon avenge the death of their comrades.
Officials said that nine militants had been killed in the attack, while local people put the death toll at 18.
Some unconfirmed reports say that a doctor of Arab origin who frequented the compound was among the dead.

Repeat of tora bors
teh waziristan people are moving to karachi and other parts of pakistan. For a long time pakistanis blamed the afghan refugees for crime and jihad, now it is the turn of waziristan refugees. Hopefully this time, they will defeat the pak army.
Scarce resources
IN your editorial, ‘More refugees in Karachi’ (Feb 28) ), about the pouring of the Waziristan refugees in Karachi, you wrote that it would be ‘churlish’ to make hundreds of Waziristan refugees pouring into the city feel unwelcome.
It is true as you have explained that as fellow Pakistanis, these few thousand refugees from Waziristan have every right to seek the same socio-economic opportunities (commensurate with their skills and education) available to other Karachi residents.
Sure. One only wonders which ‘proper health facilities and better access to quality education’ were you referring to. Of course, people in Karachi will be generous to share these ‘facilities’ with the newcomers but only if these existed to begin with.
By the way, as fellow Pakistanis, do these refugees have any rights to settle in some other parts of Pakistan? Islamabad and Lahore would be a better choice and more convenient destinations for these fellow citizens.

zeemax,
Investing in development projects need stability, a good law and order situation, stable institutions. No one will invest in afghanistan. Take the case of pakistan itself, no one is putting money in any factories, the textile indutsry is on its last leg, hosiery industry is wiped out, it is low tech bed linen and cheap towels are paki textile exports. Take the case of elcxtricity, nno one is investing in generation, and the reason si what happened to hubco, the privatised generation company and how the legal confusion killed it.
In pakistan it will be only trade, where the profit and loss are quick. No one will invest for the long term in pakistan, and afghanistan is far worse. Many of pak exports have dried up because foreign quality assurance inspectors will not come to pakistan.

This article has it's plus and minus points. The point about setting a duty free textile zone though is a terrible one from the US perspective.
First according to a previous cut and paste article from Pavo the Pashtun Afghans are bunch of tough guys who can never accept foreign rule. That they would take up tailoring and forget about fighting is fanciful to say the least.
Second, whole of Pakistan would smuggle their textiles to these duty free zones so they could get duty free entry to the US. So it would really benefit Pakistan and the smuggling industry mainly.
Third, as others pointed out textile, garment industry is cutthroat and requires scale etc.
But getting economics going is the way to go. It should be done in the stable areas like Jalalabad, Kabul, Herat, Mazar-e-Sharif. The Kandahar Taliban stronghold should be quarantined and let those from that area suffer backwardness that the Taliban influence engenders and let good propaganda be made of the retrogressive nature of Taliban rule, economically particularly as that is what people consider first and foremost.
The corrupt local warlord leadership needs limiting in their theiving and earning from smuggling and the Karzai Govt needs to gain control of these income streams. US aid should be linked to matching amounts gained from taxing goods imported and exported. Then the Afghan Govt would have a super incentive to improve upon the collection of these taxes which as the author points out are the major source of revenue which the state could be getting.
