hamidm yaar, things are already looking good. Hellfires in NWFP, Palestine is halved already, Chechans are busy buying Chanel No. 5 in booming Moscow malls, Filipinos are going on vacations in Mindanao and Kashmiris are clamoring for BPO centers. Jihadis are getting spanked and the future is bright.

GT, It woudl be fine to have those high browed methods of dealing with vermin if they were only hurting pakistanis. But reality is that pakistani jihadis have been invloved and or linked to terrorism on a global scale..and the last attempt at "talking" to them didn't really work out....too well.

So the mantra now is, if you don;t do it, someone else will. And if someone else (US) does it, then the sovereignty of a democractically elected country is well...usurped.

there are no good options here. But I agree with tahmed, this is pakistan's fight to own and win.

... but we can fix the problem quite easily ..... i think if we care of a couple of million diehard jihadis the rest will fall in line very quickly ..... it is an uphill battle and can only be accomplished by expanding nato to include israel and sending the idf to clean out the caves and spider holes .......

I would have addressed this to Hamid as well, but he is no better than the Indians here going "Paki, paki ... bomb, bomb". More about him later, but first let us get back to simple and clear facts.

A civilized democratic government of a country does not have to FIGHT with its citizens ar groups of citizens. India does, but then I never claimed that India is civilized. You and I can agree/disagree whether a suicide bomber is a criminal and his group is a criminal group. And I concede that it is the duty of a state to go against criminals. However, the courts should ultimately decide whether an individual or a group is criminal or not. I would not agree with HP here that tribals per se are criminals. But that is a more civilized debate. Bombing areas, or allowing others to bomb areas is Pakistan, should be an absolute NO NO. We should stop talking about a WAR on terror. Let Bush talk about it and even he is being marginalized by the US electorate.

The present government did indeed say it is a FIGHT (not a war). Hopefully, they meant it like a fight against poverty, hunger, lawnessness etc. For this FIGHT, the govt. should:
EITHER: (i) initiate talks within the parameters set by the Pakistani constitution; OR (ii) build cases against individuals/groups and get serious about "arresting" them along guidelines set by the courts (such guidelines can be sought within two months say). Let the "methods" for "arrests" be legally determined. Not by you, hamid or zeemax. There are no ther ways. And this is all very simple.

As far as Hamid is concerned .... he is either a Hindian or an islamofascist.

hamidm: and one more thing - my wife reports that as soon as the mid-east flight she was on yesterday took off from Pakistan in the wee hours of the morning, a maulvi stood up and started howling out what he claims is the "call to prayer" but is actually his proclamation of being the "religious leader". Woke up all the kids in the plane who then started howling along with him. The oriental waitresses stood around with inscrutable expressions on their faces.

Just thought I would add this to maintain your Islamphobia at cruising altitude.

hamidm: So being a muslim is a crime in your view. Do you plan to arrest the wife and kids then, and hand her over to general hosni mubarak so he can include them in his head count?

Also, you may not have realized this, but you have just introduced the Doctrine of Original Sin into Islam. Give yourself a pat on the back, Saint Augustine!!
