Re: # 128
....some also say that it is the combination of al(the) and ilah (worshppable/deity); hence "al-ilah", then further condensed to 'allah'.
I know about his daughters mostly from the tale behind the Satanic Verses, mentioned I think by Ibn-e-Ishaq, amongst others (I'd be happy to stand corrected). Names were "Al-lat, Al-manat and Al-uzza".
hamidm sahib can perhaps take it from here (if not busy with golf, that is).
Cheers

Re: # 128 interesting! Moon god was also referred to as "sin" in the middle east.
In arabia according to what I have found out- it was referred to as "al-ilah". (however, every tribe refferred to their diety as "al-ilah" - a generic reference meaning "the god". I am given to understand that this was later shortened or modified (linguists can tell us more) to Allah before Muhammad began promoting his new religion in 610 AD.
What is also interesting to note is that apparently the moon god was the central diety of the querishi tribe, and apparently was the main diety in the holy of holies - he was called hubaal????
Please note: this is not to cause an insult nor is it intended to make any one feel insulted. If they do please accept my apologies straight away.
AKCHEEMa from what you say, hamidm2 says, etc : What is also interesting as a result is that the phrase
la ilaha ill allah - was a way of ensuring the querishi god reigned supreme and all others were discarded. An interesting way to introducing monotheism. And it hasbeen both power and attractive.

the golf ball is the offering to the moon god - he has been practising his shots into the sky at night!

dash-dor mian,
al-lah, before he changed his name to allah mian, was the powerful and popular moon god who was worshiped by the quraish ..... he was married to the sun goddess and begat three duaghter - lat, manat and uzzah ..... in the original version of the koran, al-lah (now mian) allowed the muslims to continue worshiping the three sisters ....... however, it is said that satan inserted these verses when muhammad and gabriel took a nap and therefore they were rescinded .......... now you know the rest of the story
........ but really, it is relevant to the subject at hand only in the sense that it shows that discrimation against women is not just a human trait, it is also prevalent among gods and jinns .....

Re: # 130; Dash
one musn't forget that "allah" was used to describe the "biblical god" by both the jews and chrsitians of arabia before Mohammed came into play.
hence the current assertion of the saudi king that all the references to "the one god" in the three abrahamic travesties are to the same fella..
even today the arabic bible uses the name "allah" for the god yahweh
cheers

Re: # 132 hamidm2 yes, what is also interesting is the manner in which socio-political requirements were copted into the god-laws. Women are the pods which carry the human peas and produce them, and these peas were considered a valuable economic commodity. So control the woman you control one very important commodity. So belittle them to subdue them.

Re: # 133
Cheema, apparently this is not the case. There is a treastise somewhere ( its in the BL) , which claims that the christians introduced the Prophet to monotheism.
However, the moon god or sin was there in the lavant, was an assyrian god, and a god of various others tribes of the ME. THere is also a pre BC coinage with the eaxct creseant moon and star symbol on it.
However, AKCheema, sahib we will all get a fatwa on our heads for discussing this here. Our mutual friend(s) zeemax and tahir must right now be furtively and furisously working their way towards this.
So I will stop here, for I value my skin more than they value theirs.
Thank you

As a last thing from my side: it is not surprising the moon god was the diety - for it controlled the calanders etc.
Even today Lunar calander rules over the solar one - when it comes to major festivals - even for the christians - (xmas is not a festivals, easter is).

Ak Cheema...
hence the current assertion of the saudi king that all the references to "the one god" in the three abrahamic travesties are to the same fella..
Ans: How Saudi King can know that Jew God, Christian God and Muslim God is same? It is directed from the Super God (living in Washington DC)?
To Azra Rashid-
Honor killing will stop only if the women inclucate proper value within their children. Mother had more influence on a child than father ( Mother Nature not Father Nature)...

The difference is THIS Mr.Harish:
I'm a Pakistani, while some that you seem to be needlesly defending are Pakis! Try telling the difference.
I don't have an issue with Hinduism--it is not a religion anyway--but many here seem to foam at the mouth when Islam is mentioned. Since they cannot dig anything except Ahadith literature against the Holy Qur'an or Prophet Muhammad (peace on him), stooping to abusing those who show them the way is all they can do. Hence, intensely personal attacks!!
Muslims are fully within their right to attack in self-defence when attacked or when treaties are broken. I attack when attacked, and to defend Islam is a business every Muslim ought to take up. If Rip Van Winkles continue to sleep while they are attacked, the least one can do is try waking them up. Now, is this evil in your book?
Again, I'm a writer not a freelance journalist from Torn-apart Ronto. What I think of today's journalism is best expressed by Oscar Wilde whom I would not mind quoting if you asked me politely.
I did express my disgust when that honour-killing took place in Lahore. It is on record, not here on CHOWK but elsewhere.
I will continue to express my disgust with those who've turned their collective animal backs at Pakistan and are now living comfortably criticising it from across the seven seas. For them to drown, one palmful would have been quite enough.
You need to laugh; I do Mr.Harish.

Miss Najma-in-torn-apart-Ronto,
"Because He Couldn’t Get It Up!"
What kind of a liberal articel title is THIS for a woman whose name sounds so Muslim?
Please get a Nobel Prize soon (through this sort of work) and relieve us of our misery.

"we share the same values..."
Are what are these values you share with your uncivilised cousins?
"I don't see why talking about it..."
Well, you're just TALKING without thinking. And who authorised you to bad-mouth us while living in torn-apart Ronto?
Forget Pakistan, worship the Maple Leaf.
