i imagine the enfant terrible bellowing about the US elite will be making his thoughts known at any point now. I have to read this when it is not past midnight, and I am hopefully more awake to comment on it.

It is against the very nature of this society to become classless. This is a Capitalist society. This society strongly believes in classes. If a politician even talks about turning the US into a classless society, he will be very quickly sent to an asylum.
Obama will lose battle for nomination for just an observation that the redneck America is bitter.

Living in the US and making it does not mean that people should close their eyes and start writing praises for the non-existing laurels. Ask the blacks and they will tell you the real story of race in the US. They have lived here for generations. You have just come here and have no idea how the slavery and Jim Crow type laws worked in this country.

99% of Blacks in the US are partly white. Not knowing the basic facts about the history of the country you live in leads to really childish understanding of what race relations are all about. The blacks fought a hard and bitter battle in this country for almost three hundred years to get to where they are now. You are reaping the benefits of their struggle and you think some athletes are all about making the US a classless society.

A south Indian in the 50s in this country would have been sharing bathrooms with blacks. Just a look your skin color would tell you which bathroom you would have used. Lucky you that blacks struggle at least created some opportunities for you to live as an equal in this country!

The factor you have highlighted in your article "accumulated wealth" is intereting - and infact plays a large role int he ability to educate your children - they get better drilled at a good school (often public here in the UK and private in the US). This initial coniditon holds them in good sted for the initial years in life.

But the they do say most sociology is often stating the obvious but using numbers.

BTW have you read Venketesh (col.U prof) who wrote Gang Leader for a day - a great book and one whoch should be read by all of us.
