Absolutely correct. Whether it was out of political compulsions, societal conditioning or real beliefs fact of the matter is this only strengthened the clerics argument. One excellent example is the treatment of Mujahideen khalq in Iran. Imran Khan's of the world should educate themselves in history, but then again arrogance is such a virtue.

Islamic Socialism's attempt to "read into progressive ideas in the Koran" actually triggered a trend in which the clergy distorted Koranic texts to legitimize feudalism, orthodoxy, and women's oppression.

An example would help clarify the point. May we have one Sir?
