trust hamid to say that drinking is better than praying and fasting. although in more than a few folks' cases it just might be true!

I am actually in agreement with hamid about sending boys off to kill or be killed in the service of their country at the age of 18, but not putting a drink in their hand. That is bollocks. Alcohol is associated with all things "mad, bad, and dangerous" but putting a gun in someone's hand is not?

"Just being a teenager in this country is hard enough"
speaks volumes.
the article is really a good description of a sorry dilemma
cheers ...

feroz mian,

..... as a parent, my biggest nightmare is drunk driving and i am all for really coming down on people who drink and drive ....... having said that, i think it is kind of silly to expect that kids, specially college kids, will not drink just because some reformed old drunkards passed a law in lansing or austin ...... besides, i can't imagine how anyone can go through four years of college without drinking ! .... what the heck do you do on friday night after iftar ?

...... it is extremely hypocritical of adults to tell a twenty year old that he/she is not old enough to drink but old enough to kill and be killed in the service of his country ....... it is bs like this that makes kids rebel and do silly things and makes us old foggies look like fools ..... in any case, drinking is a lot less dangerous than praying and fasting that can lead to jihad and other demonic acts .......

madani jee, re #16 maybe instead of whipping the kid maybe the parent needs a drink to calm his own ass down.

Re: # 8 I second your thinking. Parents should be allowed to whip and teachers be urged by parents for whipping the boys and girls till they do good in school.
I remember I had a really bad teacher and he use to pull ears for not behaving properly in class. It use to hurt. But then my mind controled as painthroshould in young age is not large.
Now as women come of age is problem how young women can be whipped. Boys can be whipped. That is real dilema. At that age women are over sensetive beyond imagination. The young women are beyond control as they are manupulative. I remember shock of my life. I throw away lipstick business and my daughter told me she is not going to college and I should kill her. I was terrified and said do not talk like that, do whatever you want , paint yourself but just stop threatening me. It hard what young women will say. They more trouble father and mother indirectly support them and their foolish young antics is real problem.
Good day

Re: # 12 May be freely providing Alchohol and Zina sex will have desired effect ? Highly unlikely. They will addict to both and short to calamities.
This twisted reasoning of liberals makes Madani rectionary and old fashioned way and backward looking. At this stage of life as a epilogue feels conservative mind saved many problems.
At that young age freedom is wrong. Freedom lies in understanding necessities. With age maturity comes and sublimation so I do not condemn drinking but sure not appreciate as great virtue.
Good day.

MADD wasn't responsible...congress tied highway funding to the national minimum drinking age..

Congress ties national drinking age to highway funds

Restaurants and taverns in as many as 28 states will be forced to alter their alcoholic beverage serving practices within the next two years as a result of the national drinking age legislation passed by Congress late last month.

The final bill, which was enroute to the White House for President Reagan's signature at presstime, represents a key legislative setback for food-service industry groups concerned over the bottom-line impact of a nationwide 21-year-old drinking age.

The clincher came on a surprisingly lopsided 81 to 16 Senate vote to cut Federal Highway funds to states which fail to comply with the new national age restrictions on alcoholic beverage sales by 1986.

My point being that the more you make something forbidden or banned the more humans--especially teenagers--are likely to want to do it.

I don't drink myself but it seems the US is always more draconian in its laws compared with EU countries. You can drink at age 16 in most EU countries, certainly in Germany.

Excellent topic Feroz Bahi, one I can relate too from all aspects. I came to US at a time when the laws were just changing. MADD as it sounds is MAD, if the fucker can vote, join the army and impregante without handholding I am sure he can figure out how to untwist or pop open a can.

Worlds all fashion fads many times originate from usa and then they are copied by local eites and NGO for good and bad.
I read in USA cigarattes are very costly almost prohibitive. And there is great propaganda against it all time by GOUSA. While liquior, beer and all dirty stuff which damages ( Wisely prohibited by real Muslims. Unfortunate part is many extreme muslims in politics when come to wine , beer and liquior can not resist and insult their belief in Islam by drinking, hypocrites and chors)your mind body and leads man or woman to murder, violence and zina sex and drugs etc. As in america every thing goes why govts are against cigarattes and not against liquid poisons ? Is there politics involved. When I say politics means what is concentrated economics. Why elites producing cigarattes are hated and elites killing more people than tobacco are not attacked in print. It appears that this war betwwen Adiction sellers. Kindly some body can throw lights.
Some body said mr. Gen. President Zia use to somoke and drink and afterwards as he studied and became strong moral muslim. Is it true or just people want to criticise dead president ?
good night

I must say I never drank when in Pakistan .... it is illegal! (regardless that is may be freely accessible)

Same in all the other countries where it is illegal too ... however, where it IS legal ... personal discretion is warranted!

As for the teenagers ... well, they should be brought up with some sense of discipline I reckon ... bring back corporal punishment I'd say! ... none of this sissy non-sense of "negotiating" with them ... they are all scum and should be treated as such ... until they grow up and decide to be a part of the human race again!

I agree with ejaz about individual responsibility but good luck educating that to people who want to place responsibility squarely on other peoples' shoulders.

isn't that why we have laws?!

kukku, enjoy DC!
