Yes, many doctors are greedy and unprofessional in their attitudes, but I know patients' relatives who want magic, not treatment. Patients are brought into the hospital almost dead, and the family says, "here's money, now cure him/her". Medicine/diagnosis/treatment is often a wait-and-watch situation. Patience doesn't seem to be a virtue in an ICU waiting area. In fact, visitors/relatives keep comparing notes, symptoms, treatments, which is so dangerous. The internet has made life more complicated. The more educated the patient, the more likely he is to believe he knows it all, even though he may be a finance man who has never opened a biology book. This is an era of accept nothing, question everything, and be miserable in the bargain. Doctors aren't gods or saints, they make mistakes, and are, rarely, rascals. But patients/relatives quite often make a nuisance of themselves. Much of the friction between the doctor community and the patients can be avoided if there is free and direct talk. Another thing. Ever wondered why people spend without blinking on an expensive holiday, but cringe when they have to pay a doctors' bill? Or an insurance premium?

Its not only in India .The malpractice suite due to over supply of lawyers millions are claimed on capitation basis which means half of million for lawyers or half of any amount above it .
With that the premium spl for high risk procedures in Ob Gyn Neuro surgey or even gen surgeon is more than bothersome collection '
some time after having enough to retire its good business sense not to work like donkey for negative return.

Too many points at once. I agree that doctors are so suspicious now that they think of saving themselves first, and doing the right thing by the patients later, because the best treatment for every patient is not necessarily the best for you if something goes wrong.
My father's clinic is near the centre of a large north Indian city, and he used to often get people coming in with minor scrapes needing a place to sit down and get patched up and they were often given a tetanus shot. He is a cardiologist, and doesn't need to treat these people who are more trauma/ surgical/orthopaedic cases, in any case, it was always done for free. He is now too scared to do it even though nothing has happened to him, and gets his off-sider to direct people straight to a hospital.
Another friend of his refuses to admit patients under his care to private hospitals if he has not seen them in the past and they are significantly unwell. He has seen too many doctors being beaten up, and at 65, doesn't think it's worth his time.
Whose loss is it?
