as per my understanding of animal digestive system is concerned, the muscle formation do not depend upon what it eats (not chemical contamination etc... but broad category of food items)...but then the 7th century beduin should not be aware of it and whatever he had concluded from external observation or prejudice he had inherited from the jewish and arab tribes, passed as word of god....

another very well known scavenger and omnivore commonly used for food is the chicken ... it would eat almost anything available including pecking on its own filth! despite those attributes, seems very popular with most of humanity including the "faithful".

I have seen cow drinking it's own urine....for vegetarian animals, the content of nitrogenous (harmful) substance will be very less in their urine (urine is not a chemical compund, it is kind of mixture)....so, they can drink their own urine....

I have (first hand) observed the male-goats before the "baqr eid" drinking their own urine

So we can add the goat to the list of animals which eat their own excrement, in addition to the pig and the Hindoo.

Btw, I think avoidance of pork was more a reason for avoiding tapeworm than anything else.

the 'taboo' regarding pork has nothing whatsoever to do with its eating habits ... it was a half-hearted continuation of jewish custom of not eating anything that "doesn't chew the cud or doesn't have split hooves" according to the old testament .... by that rule, the camel also falls into the 'haraam' category ... this, of course, was overruled since the arabs were fond of the camel and considered the pig a taboo ... given their sense of inferiority to the "people of the book" (yes that is exactly what they were called! the term was 'plagiarised' into the main source of muslim mythology (the koran)

as for the animals eating habits, like I said long ago now, I have (first hand) observed the male-goats before the "baqr eid" drinking their own urine; it gave them a strange musky smell ... hence the term "Bo-bakra"! ... never put the momins off their food the next day!

So folks, what’s the answer? What to make of the verses forbidding pork? Quran says to shun pork, but tahmed says pork is fine as long as you are willing to put up with low quality meat (!!). Of course, between allah and tahmed, …tahmed knows better …

On a serious note: The issue goes much beyond pork. Quran contains detailed dietary instructions: 4-legged cattle is fine to eat, so is prey caught by trained animals and birds, etc. Forbidden is animal that dies of itself, was slaughtered in the name of a deity other than Allah, has been strangled or beaten to death, or killed by a fall … etc. etc.

Quran goes on to say that clawed animals were forbidden for Jews; also forbidden for Jews was fat on ox, sheep, and goats … though fat on the backs of these animals was OK. Indeed, this is all in Quran …
