'Secular' English media in India has a blinkered approach to secularism and in its zeal to highlight the unsavory incidents perpetrated only by one community, they have now become the most 'unsecular' of all indian institutions.
The incident in Kolkata that you have written about was not even known to me and I am a regular watcher of the English Tv channels that went on 48x7 about the Pub Incident. These kind of reporting policies are the ones that are actually pushing fringe saffronites into a more central space due to a) free publicity b)a sense of greivance that the hoodlums from the other side are never accorded the same 'honor'.

Sanatani,
Citizenship is not bestowed on the basis of religion. Religion becoming an issue in citizenship would muddle the issue beyond comprehension and there'd be constant civil war among peoples for nothing.
Any (blind) belief system (about going to heaven or hell) should NEVER be part of citizenship issue. Nation-state is a modern set-up and all countries follow this system.
As for anti-terror laws there're many Muslim countries that enacted ATLs. Exceptions are exceptions. Islam is a political religion and NOT all Muslims by birth or inheritance are Islamists.
India is in a very tricky situation of having 160 mio Muslims among us. Do u want 160 mio problems with them or u want 320 million helping hands in building India?
Choice is yours.
If u think that it's not possible then I cant convince u coz u cant be convinced.
Appreciate if u r constructive in ur posts i/o gaalis.
Thanks and Rgds,

VRV,
Why should I deny my primary identity for an assumed one.
Most of the Muslais in SA were from Guj, South and Bihar.
Yet they raised the flag of Pak in SA on 14th of Aug 1947.
Caseem Uttem Prez of Mauritius resigned rather than sign an anti-terrorist bill.
What crap are you talking the primary Identity IS, WAS AND SHOULD BE Hindu in Samajic Terms, Sanatani in Dharmic Terms and then Only Bhartiya in Rashtic terms.
Please rermve these blinkers from your head.
Hemant

By virtue of majority Hindus shud lead the movement of change but pandering to a big section of Muslim extremists negates the instincts of moderation among Hindus.
Has anybody rallied - even one soul - against the article of Vir Singhvi who made very damning comments of Hindu Gods, leave alone seeking his head (literal)? That speaks for itself.
It's no longer advisable to treat Muslims who constitute 30% of Bengal as minorities. Minorities are those whose population is less than 3-5%. This cetegorisation emboldens some sections of the community to give mass, violent protests as we saw during Tasleema's book in Calcutta & the real issue is that they all get away with violence and other crimes like destruction of public, private properties.
Though we've good number of middle class, moderate Muslims but the loony brigade always gets the prize of representing the whole of Muslims and their sentiments. Bengalis are very sensitive and Bengali Muslims would be like cocktail of sentiments. Nevertheless the state shud prevail and idea of India shud assert. We're neither Hindu protagonists not Muslim ones......we're Indian protagonists. Period.

I agree with most of your comments in this article.
Johann Hari and his ilk are cut from a different cloth from Indian secularists. Secularism in India still seems to mean putting down Hindus and Hinduism every which way, instead of separating religion entirely from public space.
I don't know if India has the courage to change its definition of secularism. Indian secularism in its current form has not worked, and it is an apology for true secularism.
