Re: # 4
I agree. The presence of US's and Europeans universities in Doha is not for educating Qatarians. It is to make money to support their research and other activities in the US and in Europe. However, it is still better than Arab sheikhs establishing new Swiss bank accounts etc.

It is not an accident that the top institutions of higher learning are found in the US and Europe. The most likely reason for this is the freedom of thought, inquiry and expression that allows people to pursue the kind of research that would be considered heresy in Qatar and many similar authoritarian societies. Even countries like Japan find it hard to match the performance of top US and British universities.

What motivates major American university's interest in Qatar is the opportunity for additional revenue, rather than finding new venues for groundbreaking new research and dev.

I've watched some of the Doha debates, and they're a step in the right direction, but they come nowhere near the kind of free debate made possible in the West.
I understand the Sheikha is interested in education, especially women's education. It will be interesting to see what the future holds.

Doha would be another Dubai in 10-15 years. Thumbs Up for Doha.
