Baghlihar project was to bring electricity and development in kashmir. the project was cleared by a neutral expert acceptable to pakistani`s before we built it. and mr.mallick, we indians are tired of your friendship calls. just leave us alone.

Thank you Mr. Malick for your very educative, very enlightening article. As somebody who is studying Pakistan, India, and other Asian countries, I came across this water conflict for the very first time today. I just thought that if there is an existing water treaty between the two countries, then why does one country build a dam or dams which deprives the other country of full access to water? Water is a basic right, and if it is tampered upon putting another country's livelihood at peril, surely something must be done about it.
This issue really strikes at the core of equal access to water resources. And in the interest of global politics, diplomacy and regional security, two countries that are in a very sensitive situation, relations-wise must refrain from agitating each other. Indirectly although fundamentally, I think this may be what the other country is doing. After all, every human being is entitled to water.
Is there a higher tribunal of sorts that can mediate in a conflict of this nature and magnitude? It is definitely a flash point. How come the UN is not doing something about this?

For Pakistanis what comes first? Faith or flag? Are Pakistanis first Muslims or first Pakistanis? Great article on Guardian ..
How can a country be expected to prosper if the majority of its citizens harbour only a secondary allegiance to the state? How can it progress if, as the author MJ Akbar wrote, "the idea of Pakistan is weaker than the Pakistani".

If I am not mistaken, I think Pak ballistic missiles are named after the Afghan invaders you mention for a reason...to scare our eastern neighbor.
Riaz chu**ye, next time please name your kids after the Afghan invaders. If they grow to become soldiers, maybe at least that way, your incompetent hijRa army will win a war against its eastern neighbor. Right now, both the Indian soldier and Paki hijRa soldier knows the outcome of the war long before it has even begun...so predictable has it become. Time to surprise your neighbor. Or maybe just changing names may not result in change of cowardly Paki genes?

muqaddam #199 actually i have two very nicely done statues of rama and sita (bought from indonesia many years ago) occupying a place of honor in my family room. so i am already half-way there. :-)
but seriously - my using the term "sri rams" is not meant to offend anyone's religious feelings. I prefix the term to refer to these posters running to the defense of AlephNull as a way of pointing out how they have let their hindu identity overshadow their individuality.

shankar #195 we have indeed been penpals on chowk for 10 years!! that is longer than the japanese penpal i used to have for years in school...anyway, thanks for your concern about chowk getting to me, but not to worry - there are lots of things I love about India (music, history) which have nothing to do with chowk, and I enjoy life too much to let a few disgruntled souls bother me. And to form serious views on issues like India-Pakistan relations, chowk is totally inconsequential. I have to admit getting some cheap thrills poking at "I am so-o-o profound and knowledgeable and can even do mental math while standing on one leg on the head of a pin" types on chowk.

Ahmedji, there is a story that before Valmiki wrote Ramayan he was an undesirable element quite evil and fearsome. In order to make him a better man, he was told to japofy the name of Rama which he refused. When he was told to japofy the word mara, he immediately liked and started repeating mara mara mara mara mara which gradually became rama rama rama rama. Legend has it that he bacame a disciple of Ram and penned the Ramayan.
Your repeating the word Ram in every third mail might have interesting consequences.

"...Both countries essentially share the same value system..."
Really? Pakis are Islamo-supremacists, and Indians are secular. Are we on the same page yet?

"...tahmedji,
We have been friends on Chowk for more than 10 yrs.

Shankar, there was no need for the disclaimer up front - you could have cut straight to the chase.

tahmedji,
We have been friends on Chowk for more than 10 yrs.
I am saying this as a friend & not a shrink. I think this microcosm of Chowk is getting to you.
I am not defending this one upmanship & constant Paki/muslim bashing by these Indian bigots. I assure you this Chowk microcosm does not represent all Indians. Both countries essentially share the same value system. You will realize this if you take regular time off from Chowk & interact with Indians in the real world.
Since you are a big believer of democratic ideals, you do see that majority of Indians rejected parties based on religion/caste & other extremist bs.
Chowk is a good way to blow off steam every once in a while.
Stay on it too long, & you will start acting like these pesky Indian crows.

Pssst, Tahmed, Aleph is actually a saint, not a Sri Ram. Since you have Sri Ram on the brain, I recommend a pilgrimage to Ayodhya and Amarkantak.

#189-91: Three more hindus added to the Hindu Mob to Rescue Sri Ram AlephDud.

Wow, someone does a quick physics calculation about global warming, and because of that he's a hindu fanatic?
They talk about the deficient education system in Pakistan, but they underestimate!
I guess it's like some inner city blacks who think being educated is "acting white"! For Pakis, being knowledgable must be "being Hindoo"

Everybody comes to chowk to "interact", but mullah32 pretty much lives here - even though he does claim to have a real life outside of chowk... LOL
