Himansu Rai was a true pioneer. Perhaps, if he had chosen to go to Calcutta instead of Bombay, Calcutta would still be the preeminent place in Indian cinema. Hinansu Rai brought Ashok Kumar and Devika Rani in the limelight; Ashok Kumar brought in his brother Kishore Kumar and Devika Rani Yusuf Rai aka Dilip Kumar. And, so, the industry flourished even though the house that Rai built (Bombay Talkies) and even its successor (Filmistan) went into oblivion.
