Real Indian Slumdog Millionaires!

Prince Dance Group from Orissa Wins the "India Got Talent" show
------------------------------------------------------------

A Journey to Remember : From Slum to Glory

http://www.odishatoday.com/feature/From_slum_to_glory_230809-9382759 863278564387.html

Berhampur ( Orissa ) : Yes, Berhampur’s got talent. To the utter disbelief of the people across the country, the children of labour class people of Harijan Sahi of Ambapua village near Berhampur city have won the reality show ‘India’s got talent’ in Colors Channel.

The slum children most of them from the labourers family and some do work as a daily labourers have proved the world that even the slum children could, with conviction and hard work, achieve what the rich aspire to achieve it.

From a little known Danda Naacha troop, the children have excelled to perform the Dasaavatara with perfection before the well acclaimed judges, audience and millions of people across the country viewing the show live through the night of grand finale of the reality show on August 22.

Till, the semi final round of the reality show- ‘India’s got talent’, even the people of Berhampur city were not aware of such a group that could bring laurels for the city and the state of Orissa. But, after the semi final round when these children belonged to the Prince Dance Group trained by Krishna Mohan Reddy had reached at the final stage, good wishes started to pour and campaigning to garner support through mobile SMS was started and the people from all quarters had began to cooperate.

Starting from the district administration to the Chief Minister, from local institutions to the corporate houses, school and college students, local unions and organizations, even the handicapped people across the city had started campaigning to bag votes for Prince Dance Group through SMS.

Large hoardings had been displayed, large screen displays were arranged for the public view and specially, big screen displays were arranged in several locations including at Ambapua Harijan Street in the city on the night of grand finale of the reality show to watch it live.

Everyone was waiting for the moment of declaration. As time passed after the performances of 11 dance groups in the reality show, the heart and breath of the people of the city and the families of these children taking part in the show increased and all waited for the moment of glory and passed some anxious moments of their life.

Prior to the declaration of results, the views of the judges were unexpected particularly for the audience as the judges openly supported and wish for the success of these slum children.

Oscar winner Sekhar Kapoor of the ‘slum dog millionaire’ fame had then stated ‘I have never seen such a performance till date. Song, dance, choreography, and coordination everything was excellent. I don’t find proper words to express. I don’t understand who trained you people, where you had practiced…”. Kiran Kher, another judge of the show also openly wished for the Prince Dance Group of Berhampur, Orissa appealing the people to vote for this group through SMS. Kiran said that in the performance of Dasavatara, And, Sonali Bandre was also excited enough to wish for this group stating their performance as ‘excellent’.

The announcers of the show then declared the three groups including the Prince Group that remained in the final stage. The people of Ambapua Harijan Sahi particularly the mothers of children who were taking apart in the show, were breathless and eagerly waiting for the moment as they had wished through these days by lighting the Akhand Deep at Kali temple of the village.

They even did not take the dinner, stated Sarada, mother of Munna Das adding ‘we never thought that our children would one day reach at such a stage to make Orissa and Berhampur proud in the country”.

When Rani Mukherjee declared the finale result announcing ‘and the winner is prince dance group, Berhampur Orissa’, everyone in Berhampur city and the people of Ambapua started celebrating.

The joy of mothers of these children were unexplainable as they had also started to dance like the little children, stated Sabitri, the mother of Santosh Das adding that they had waited for this moment and all started to dance along the children of the village.

Berhampur MP Sidhant Mohapatra who was present at the show said that these children were not slum dogs, but ‘prince of slums’. Even, Chief Minister Naveen Patanik had also congratulated these children over phone in the night of grand finale of the reality show on August 22.

Krishna, the master of Prince Dance Group, speaking to the Odishatoday.com over phone form Mumbai said that he was feeling great as he could bring laurels for the city and the children of labourers could do something for the state.

They thank all the people of the state as the people cutting across age, caste, religion and region had voted in favour their dance group. They would continue to dance and would try to place Berhampur in the world map by performing at international events, added Krishna.

Mmaster of the group Krishna who was responsible to gather, bring up and train these slum children through these years at Harijan street of little known village located at the end of Berhampur city in Orissa.

Re: # 26

Thank you, Ras sahib!

For me, among the positives coming from visiting this site is the appreciation that I have developed for Faiz and several other "Pakistani" creative artists who -- being what they are -- transcend geography. What one learns from such individuals is that real independence is a state of mind and subscribes to no set templates of any kind.

Good job here Beej Sahib..

These words of Faiz still ring true today.....

" a dalit woman got a job as a cook for mid day meals at a primary school in a Rajasthani village. Children of upper caste families refused to eat and..."

Sad commentary indeed. But is this all about it? I have a muslim family as tenants. In spite of being provided water and electricity round the clock and toilet facilities, they take bath only once in a week and keep their surroundings shabby. All of them had a bout of loose motions recently and still they have not learnt anything from it.

My sympathies to that dalit woman. But does anyone know what could be the actual reason for not eating her preparation? They refuse to change their habits. Even in city like Bombay, people prefer to squat on the rail track even when the Corporation has provided them with toilet facilities. Reason? They want to have the 'satisfaction' of defacating in the open!

DM_ji, thanks.

Your observation is on the dot.

It is paradox-like but true. There is an old saying – there are few self-proclaimed bigots in the world. People create their own cocoons. Sometimes, the cocoon is defensive – because accepting it for what it is would be too painful and would destroy the carefully cultivated self images – not only of one’s own self but also of those who are long gone and revered ceaselessly.

There are folks who can go through their whole life without getting out of the cocoon.

Looking at others as less than ourselves helps rationalize things which logic fails to help with.

When the Englishman thought of the Hindustanis as less than him – in his own eyes, he was not being a bigot – only stating what HE saw as the truth all around him. In reality, it gave him a self-serving license to do as he pleased in the subcontinent.

When the White Americans were treating Black Americans as less than human, they also got a rationalization (and in their own minds, a justification) for continuing the institution of slavery.

There are countless other examples throughout history…

AND the present!

BJ:

A nice delve into the minds of a bigot who does not think that he is a bigot.

Here is an incident that I saw on TV the other day: a dalit woman got a job as a cook for mid day meals at a primary school in a Rajasthani village. Children of upper caste families refused to eat and the poor woman was summarily removed from her job.

Indians may reach the moon soon but still have to learn to take baby steps towards being civilised.

Re#14, #15

NKG, the problems of caste-based discrimination and atrocities are by no means limited to the “cow belt” as even a simple Google search will tell you. For example, below are news excerpts pertaining to three different regions of the country – Tamilnadu, Gujarat, and Karnataka.

Accordingly, you will have to turn over a lot more than Bihar and UP to Pakistan, :)

Increasing caste atrocities in Karnataka
Sunday, 01 July 2007
Eighty Dalit families from Kadkol in Karnataka's Bijapur district were ‘punished’ by caste Hindus of the village in October 2006 with social and economic boycott for drawing drinking water from the village tank to which they had been denied access for decades. For this ‘crime’, the Dalits, mostly agricultural labourers, were removed from work by their landlords, barred from ration shops, and even flourmills. The caste Hindus then began to use the tank to bathe their cattle, wash clothes, and even defecate. The Kadkol incident is only the latest story of atrocities against Dalits in Karnataka - one of 40 in the last seven months…..
