[[my only point was that the quality of healthcare in the US far exceeds that provided anywhere else in the world]]
I know for a fact that that statement is not true ... maybe pockets of excellent healthcare in the US, but what the vast majority get is fairly mediocre (at best) by european standards

Hamid Saab, think of it as a train, it has first class, business class, sleeping class, economy class, and air-conditioned class. Those are the choices, now if some idiot wants a hangingupsidedown class, no can do. The median income in this country is 45-50,000 varied state to state, and anyone with 50K family of 4 should be able to afford a health insurance. 50million is hugely inflated figure unless you are counting fat people twice, the actual figure is somewhere around 25 million, and possibly less. Not to say that that is a good thing. I personally have no issue with providing health insurance to those who are not able to afford it, my only point was that the quality of healthcare in the US far exceeds that provided anywhere else in the world.

Even if EVERYONE in the US had gone to Andover and Exeter, they would still be no match for the insurance companies and the banks who have professionals working 24/7 to make it as difficult as possible for humans to comprehend what it is he or she is signing up for. Hiding important facts in small print and doublespeak legalese are everywhere. I had this argument with a couple of Libertarian types. I was at this guy's house, and I asked him how many credit cards he had. And then I asked him to bring me what documentation he had on them. I quizzed him on what little paperwork he hadn't thrown out - turned out he didn't know 80% of the terms and conditions. This is applicable for everyone and everything. The credit card companies and the insurance companies keep changing rules every few days, and bury the consumer under so much of legalese in fine print that self-reliant macho types would have to be poring over these 24/7 just to keep up.
These Republicans and "blue dog" democrats illustrate very well what Reagan had said once - that he understood what prostitution truly was when he came to Washington.

Not having read your previous posts, I missed the context - in this case - sarcasm. So I hereby redirect my post to Kulharee and/or any other rare-steak-eating, fiercely independent (except when begging for public money) and hairy-chested Republicans.

kulharee mian,
.... there are about fifty million people who don't know how to fill out medicaid forms which really proves my case against public schools .... if these people had gone to exeter and andover like your or my kids, we wouldn't have this healthcare crisis! ..... in michigan any family that makes less than 31,400 dollars a year can get medicaid .. and anyone making 40-50 thousand a year should be able to come up with 12-15 thousand for health insurance ... the problem with these people is that for a family of four they are spending at least 400 a month on food and another 300 a month to heat up their house in the winter ... why can't they wear northface jackets and moosejaw fleeces like the rest of us and turn down the thermostats ! .....

Mr. Kulharee struck the first blow, and drew blood from messers Hamidm and DM sahib. DM Sahib parried with the state of Florida, while Mr. Hamidm did a pirouette and thrust a sarcasm-dripping rapier back at Mr. Kulharee. The crowd erupted with a thunderous shout of "Ole"!!!
Mr. Kulharee nimbly stepped aside and slashed back at Hamidm Sahib. Riaz Sahib came out of the sidelines to take the sarcasm and struck back with a sharp "let them eat cake". The crowd fell silent..aghast!!

I totally agree with you Hamid Saab, those unemployed auto workers deserve to die. If they are so stupid to file for a Madicaid form (need based coverage provided to ‘all’ Americans). May be we should first educate stupids among us before worrying about the ‘unemployed’ geniuses.

[.... all these folks - unemployed automotive engineers and slackers like bob the handyman - deserve to die for not putting aside enough money to pay for bcbs .... if i can do it, so can they .....as a matter of fact, this is natural selection at its best - these people should die because it will improve the gene pool .....]
This is what the Republican macho men were saying BEFORE coming to the long-suffering and cheated-on American public with a begging bowl when their financial enterprises collapsed from the weight of all the corruption and greed.
[- heck, i didn't need it and was still able to educate my kids ..... ]
Maybe that has less to do with your two-fisted raw macho self-reliance, and more to do with your privileged upbringing? Where access to good education and motivation was fed to you with a silver spoon?

An interesting write-up on an interview with Gore Vidal... He talks about America, besides a good bit more.

kuharee mian,
..... i agree with you and since i can go get a by-pass any time i feel like it or get a pimple removed or my prostrate fondled, i am with you ..... all these folks - unemployed automotive engineers and slackers like bob the handyman - deserve to die for not putting aside enough money to pay for bcbs .... if i can do it, so can they .....as a matter of fact, this is natural selection at its best - these people should die because it will improve the gene pool ..... i also propose shutting down the public school system in michigan - heck, i didn't need it and was still able to educate my kids ..... why should i pay property taxes to send bob's kids to school when i know that they are going to die because, like their father, they will be too stupid to be able to afford health care ........ as a matter of fact, i think they should restore dr. kevorkian's license so that he can get rid of this burden on society ......
.... last night i had dinner at the capital grill and as far as i could tell, there is plenty of food in the world - i just don't understand why people are acting like animals to get a few pounds of ata in karachi - don't they have a a capital grill in their neighborhood?

Ok bhai logo, we Desis know what’s best for everyone except for ourselves. Those who think that the Healthcare in the US is not upto par have not had experience with hospitals in other countries. US healthcare by far (and everyone agrees about that, and that’s why US hospitals are the choice destination for those who can afford pricy treatment) is superior compared to any Industrialized nation. The only debate is that the quality of it doesn’t reach the uninsured, and there are proposals and designs to reach there someday, but not at the cost of 40 odd percent who are very satisfied and an additional 30% who are spending a little more than they believe they should. The debate is about 15% Americans without insurance. The experience with bad doctors is not only a US phenomenon, that’s why one should do a thorough research and go with reliable physicians and surgeons. US Healthcare system is not about a few crooks here and there. It is about providing decent healthcare to over 300 million people.
DM Saab, by Canadian TV I meant Canadian shows. We don’t get any of those here in NY, I was just wondering if you have any comedians and other sitcoms produced in Canada, like Will and Grace, the Cosby Show, and your favorite Jack Benny show.

kulharee mian,
...... actually the canadian automotive industry IS doing better than the us ....and the reason is ? guess what? healthcare! ..... gm's healthcare cost per car is more than 1500 dollars, which is more than the cost of steel in the darn thing .......... that is why gm makes more cars in ontario than in michigan - dm sahib and his government pick up the tab ........ and you might make fun of the canadian auto industry, but it is possible that magna just might end up being a bigger car company than gm, ford or chrysler (even though i think they made a mistake by going into competition with their biggest customers and could end up in deep dooo)....
.... as for this healthcare thing, the only physician who really matters agrees with me that our healthcare system is a cruel travesty ..... according to her, it only benefits scam artists like dermatologists and chiropractors, doctors who do procedures (sometimes unnecessarily), insurance companies, hospital executives who make seven figure salaries and bonuses, drug companies and the 'doctors' who push their drugs, thieves like physical therapists and home health care providers (there are more pakis in this business than in cab driving - ever wonder why?), medicare fraud artists and welfare mamas who use the emergency room staff for day care services and free sandwiches ....... the people who get screwed by this system are people like bob - hard working folks who make too much money to qualify for medicaid and are too poor to buy heath insurance ........
..... by the way, i assume you are also against public schools and want bob to send his kids to exster or andover?

We canucks know our auqaat. We cannot afford to be as ignorant about you as you can be about us: you see, the elephant can ignore the mouse but the mouse can ignore the elephant only at his peril. And this canuck, btw, spent three years in the US and is a veteran of the Vietnam movement. Starting this year, I will also be spending my winters in florida, so I do have a little stake in your country's well-being.
As for my TV viewing, my favourite channels are TVONtario and CBC. But I am also a regular watcher of the Jim Lehrer hour on the PBS, Farid Zakaria's GPS on CNN and sometimes Charlie Rose and 60 minutes. I stopped watching your entertainment shows after Cheers and Frazier.
And I do agree with Riaz saheb that some kind of a deal is likely on healthcare, which would be a step in the right direction.
