The predicament that Pakistan finds itself in and its causes have been elaborately brought out by the author.

To make any progress, Pakistanis must ensure the preponderence of civilian rule in all aspects of the national life.

It is a pity that mediocre personalities like Musharraf and Kiyani get to decide the fate of 170 million people and represent their interests in the international arena just because they happen to wear the uniform and can any time subvert the democratic process.

A good analysis. I fully agree with the author's blame on the urban middle class's role in perpetuating this talibinisation. in fact my first article on chowk titled as " Steady Descent of Urban Middle Class into Conservatism and Religous Right" exactly had the same premise and tried to trace the same historical evolution.

Fully agree with this article. With a stable, democratic government in place in Pakistan there is every reason to hope that Pakistan will indeed have turned the corner on terrorists once the Waziristan operation succeeds in giving it "Nijaat" from these animals.

Pakis blame america and india

Pakistan's capital now resembles besieged city

In the face of the attacks, the resolve of the country's politicians, army generals and people to take the fight to the militants in their border sanctuary of South Waziristan appears to be holding. But unqualified support for the offensive is complicated by the unpopularity of the government and a belief that the violence would stop if America pulled out of Afghanistan.

In more than a dozen interviews Thursday and Friday, conspiracy theories alleging the involvement of neighboring India or the United States in the attacks were frequently aired.

"We want to see a normal life, so for God's sake, listen to what the (militants) are saying. They are against American forces in Afghanistan," said Imran Ali, a 32-year-old carpet dealer. "What America is doing is illegal, and that is the root cause of all evils."

Good article, but what we gonna do in south punjab where Taliban influence is playing ugly role, its time for Govt/Army to tear down those so called religious schools(MAD-RESSAS) where they teach hate, hang all those mullahs to trees who are are fanatic and spreading hate..
..'' From Kahuta in north Punjab to Rahimyar Khan in the south, the entire province is strewn with radicalised individuals whose ranks appear to swell, even as they lose some of their leaders. One wonders what strategy the state has in mind to curtail the terror tactics of these militants and to neutralise their organisations. If the government and its law-enforcement agencies fail to act promptly, they may soon find that it is too late to root out the menace...''Dawn.com.

Lets call a spade a spade.

The Taliban have existed since early 90s. The western crusaders attacked Afghanistan in 2001 and destroyed it under the pretexts which have all been proven bonafide lies - nothing but lies. A war of independence ensued in Afhanistan against western crusaders, which is now in its 9th year. From 2001 to July 2007 there were no suicide attacks and bombings in Pakistan. That was the time when "Pak" fouj surrendered in its long fine tradition of surrendering and sold the pakistani citizens to be butchered by drone attacks in exchange for money. Not only that, but the westernized corrupt ruling elite and "Pak" fouj declared war on the people of Pakistan by the massacre of 2000 helpless school girls in Islamabad. This blatant act of banality and utter cruelty is the pivotal point in our history which has parted the wedge between the people of Pakistan and the vassal minded corrupt ruling elite, including fouj. Fouj is the first who gave people of pakistan the first blood. Fouj is the one who has once again brought the nation of pakistan to the point of no return just as it did on March 6, 1971, when in its utter arrogance it refused to obey the verdict of people and brought our Bengali brothers to the point of no return.

It is utter madness to keep doing the same things but expecting different results. The western crusaders along with the armies of 37 nations have been tryin g the way of the gun for the 9 years and Afghanistan to no awail. No "Pak" fouj has taken over from them the role of murdering its own citizens in exchange for money. It is just shear madness and stupidity to expect "pak" fouj to achieve results that western crusaders with all their wealth couldn't achive in 10 years. Can an army who has lost every war that it has fought and lost half of its territory to its enemy win this bout against people? It is the responsibility of common citizen of pakistan to stop these mercenaries from committing mass murder of pakistani citizens which will only result in the mass suicide of this nation. Time is now to speak out.

#7 I see you have changed your tune from "napak fauj" to putting "pak" in quotes.

A useful precaution no doubt, you arab-bootlicker, given the thrashing the Pak fauj is giving to you and your bosses.

Re: # 4 I agree with T things will improve and getting better. Violence is sign of desperation. Army has air superiority , same in case of numbers and advantage to artillery and helicopter Gunships and Talibs have nothing like sam or stinger. Also many drone operations are combined operations of american and pakisistani commonders and that is putting squeeze on movement.
Sure it took 12 years to slowly get situation and it will also go in 24 years ( normal time frame)
Good day.

Khyber #6: good point. I dont think there is any intention to stop after dispatching the invaders in waziristan to hell - the mullah clowns in the panjab, if they continue their suicide bombings etc. will no doubt be next. by now the pakistan government is well aware of the treacherous nature of these devils.

mr. madani #9: not only does the pakistan military have bigger guns (and planes), it also has the blessings of Pakistan and the whole civilized world on its side. These arab/uzbeks are no match - and they were stupid enough not to realize that they survived only because they were useful fools for mr. musharraf. with a democratic government in place with no interest in their survival, they are finished.

our saving grace has been that our enemies are more stupid than us.

Re: # 1 Do not mock pakistani army leadership , saying 180 million depending on few people. That is always so in war. Top man of england Churchill was leading for whole british empire. Or stalins general like Zukov, or hitler generals like rommel, meinstein etc whole thing and more than whole of pakistan pop. ok. Please do not hit below belt general and commanders of Pakistan. They are trying best even with all unuseful things done by american foreign minister.Anyway gratefulness is not our virtue but rediculing army.

Re: # 11 Mr.T mr Musharaff is out and so needs to leave him atleast NOW. Or you are like Mr PUNJABI Manhood NS to hang him ? Leave him please. You may not like him but you must observe decency for ex president and Army chief. He may be wrong in your eyes or wrong politics but that is not crime. As he said himself in Dakka this is time to forgive and forget. Please understand no point in going back. I honesly worried about him as he is in hearts of Mohajir as first president , you do not want make them angry. We have sufficient problems no new problems are needed. I worry this hateful revenge charged CJ can find him guilty for murdering Late Bugti and he trying to give him death sentence. When he took action it was as president and army chief (and all were I corp commanders were wee consulted) not as person mr. Musharaff. He automatically get immunity by universal law, one can not get too back, generals involved in EP ( east pakistan) they killed 30K people but no body was even patted on wrist except poor niyazi and Y.Khan as revange by Bhutto. Then why single General M. Then go back first. Again sages have said ERR IS human and forgiveness is godly or something like. This CJ is dangerous man and fear he can burn karachi like last time just for his ego hundreds died. MQM had adviced to postpone his plan as they wanted to really honor him but wanted to buldoze MQM sentiments.
Best way to give ALL AND HAVE NEW START.

Re: # 12 Mr. Amin you are not practical for nobody say BB or Gen. etc are paragoan of virtue they are not only corroupt but intelluctually dishonest. Talibs are cruel but atleast not dishonest.
We know that now white washing operation is going on like "Shahid Bhutto". She had ran away from Pakistan for plain robberies not for fear of political persicution. But see with time she has become idol of virtue.
Our political leadership not bad but terrible. One said with irony if all leaders thrown to sharks people will gather on Clifton to cheer sharks.
It is not good choice but Talibs is not choice.
We do not know but we should not be not support poor armyman who is fighting. What is his fault, he has to survive and come back to his family. Those who inspired in army to join for Kargil they thought they will be supported till end but when it became too hot were dropped to die hungry and frozen. We should not be cruel for so may getting in battle as its hazy. There is no game plan , they only want to fight "bad" taliban. This is all crazy and soon if america departs real blowback will start and poor army as usual will be looser.

With all problems let us hope army get success as Taliban rule is sure not solution to cure from corroupt politiciansnd generals.
When one think of all dubious nonstate armies raised by army for years and their mercylees use as cannon fodder when they will get out of control they will go to throats of general, it just churns stomach. It is said where sage will not go in day light, fools will rush at mid night. Hope army bosses are not punished too harshly by raised armies.
Good day.
