I have read the soft copy of the book as well. This book was published in England at the same time when the thesis was submitted to Munich University, Germany. The thesis was meant to be submitted to Cambridge University. The reasons best known to Allama and his supervisor, thesis was not submitted to Cambridge but published in England and submitted to Munich University. Neither Cambridge nor Munich awarded Doctorate to Allama. It was only submitted never awarded. Many journalists have written books without PhDs. Writing a book is not a big deal.

I agree with you sir, I want PPP to show resurgence. Beign a liberal and progressive party it can get Pakistan out of the troubled waters. I am not anti PPP and I have stated it clearly in the article

Raza,
The basic premise of your article is correct that the PPP
needs to do more work within the Pakistani middle class
which is rapidly growing in urban areas and wants to see
real progress.
But to downgrade the PPP, which some people here on CHOWK
like to do on a full time basis is not wise.
It is running somewhat rudderless at the moment but will
find its bearings sooner or later.
I will stop there.

Re: # 47 Raza: "Votes are given on a perception"
Votes in Pakistani democracy are given based on the power and status of the person...such as the big landlords and tribal chiefs. It's a matter of entitlement in a "feudal democracy" that does not feel the need to deliver anything to improve the lives of its voters.

Re: # 46 Riaz sahab, I am merely saying why PPP enjoys support there. I have lived in that area also and people do remember bhutto fondly. Now i can understand you are quite allergic to democracy and PPP's feudal leadership and are irritated by the fact that "jahil" awam supports them, but the party enjoys support and some do think that it has brought properity. Now whether it has brought it or not is a seperate matter. Votes are given on a perception

Raza, And after abolishing rajas, what did Bhutto do? What prosperity did he bring? I suggest you read Mortenson's Three Cups of Tea to understand reality on the ground.

Raza,
Prosperity? What prosperity?
Here's what Dawn editorial said about it, "The usual campaign promises have been made by candidates, but the socio-economic problems are serious. For example, Gilgit city has no sewerage system or major hospital, issues that have not drawn the attention of candidates."

No elections in pakistan are completely fair. However, PPP does enjoy support there. One of the main reasons is the presense of large Shia population. Moreover historically Bhutto was the one who had brought in the properity in the region.

The elections in Gilgit were not exactly the most fair ones. While it is good that electoral process has finally started there as well, the success of candidates from PPP was mostly due to the complete support of government machinery, particularly from the Governor cum minister, who shamelessly used their offices to campaign for PPP.
