Press Release: Residents Action Movement
Australian extremist in NZ to wage war on Islam
Anti-war MP GEORGE GALLOWAY was recently suspended for 18 days from the British Parliament by pro-war politicians he has been fighting for decades. In the longest investigation in its history, a Westminster parliamentary committee found that Mr Galloway was innocent of any corruption, contrary to the smears of Tony Blair and George Bush, but suspended him anyway.
The 10-person committee of pro-war, anti-Palestinian politicians were upset that "proper respect" was not shown to them as they hounded the one British MP who has all along opposed the unjust and murderous occupation of Iraq.
Mr Galloway has all along linked George Bush's so-called "War on Terror" with the global spread of Islamophobia, saying that Muslims and their faith are being demonised in a bid to legitimise the US state's crusade for oil and power. The British MP shot to world fame in 2005 when he testified before the US Senate and in effect put George Bush and his cronies "on trial" for war crimes.
Mr Galloway will be speaking against Islamophobia in Auckland on 27-29 July at Voices of Peace meetings hosted by RAM, the Residents Action Movement. (Meeting details below.)
"Voices of Peace is being held to counter the first stirrings of organised Islamophobia in New Zealand," said RAM organiser Grant Morgan.
Grant Morgan said: "A group of right-wing Christian extremists from Australia are now in New Zealand to spread a message of hatred towards Muslims and Islam. They claim that Islam is the 'anti-Christ' and that Muslims are 'on the march' to take control of New Zealand. They allege that Muslims will destroy democracy here and force everyone to 'submit' to Islam, or else be enslaved or killed. They call for the 'mother' of all 'spiritual wars' to be waged against 'evil' Islam."
One of the main "Mosques and Miracles" speakers is Daniel Shayesteh, an extreme right Christian preacher from Sydney. His ministry in Australia, called "Exodus from Darkness", seeks to convert Muslims to his version of fundamentalist Christianity through a lurid depiction of Islam as the satanic force of darkness.
Shayesteh claims to be a convert from an Islamic revolutionary organisation in Iran. He was elected to Khomeini's government in 1981, but after political disagreements with the Iranian regime he fled to Turkey in 1988. From there he entered Australia with the help of fundamentalist Christians. He taught business at the University of Technology in Sydney for eight years…
In a letter to New Zealand's "Investigate" magazine (July 2007), Shayesteh wrote that he is "speaking out" to people in the West about the "dangers of Islam". Since 2003, he said, "I have been travelling worldwide, including NZ, to spread awareness [about Islam]"
Shayesteh is funded by several extreme right Christian groups, including The Christian & Missionary Alliance (a US-based evangelical coalition which is antagonistic to Islam) and Open Doors (a closed-door organisation which sees Christianity as a "persecuted church"). The New Zealand chapter of Open Doors is organising the "Mosques and Miracles" conferences in Wellington (25-26 July) and Auckland (27-28 July).
In New Zealand, Shayesteh is uncritically supported by "Challenge Weekly" newspaper which circulates widely inside right-wing Baptist and fundamentalist churches.
"[The Qur'an] is a book of war, which turns Muslims against the world," alleges Syahesteh on his website. "Jihad is the Arabic word for 'war' against non-Muslims... It's very important for people in the West to understand that Islam is not a religion of peace. Any Muslim who doesn't get involved in Jihad is sinning. That's the doctrine of Islam."
Another Shayesteh quote: "...Muslims want you to accept Islam as your religion; otherwise, they are not going to stop terrorism. To stop fighting against infidels is a sin in Islam."
And another: "Islam is the only religion that decrees the demolishing of other religions even to the cost of killing their followers unless they follow Muhammad."
Shayesteh's website (www.ministryblue.com/exodus) is full of similar quotes More quotes appear below.
Shayesteh is closely linked to the reverend Fred Nile, national president of Australia's ultra-conservative Christian Democratic Party who was elected to the New South Wales parliament. Nile has advocated a moratorium on Muslim immigration into Australia and a ban on Muslims being elected to the NSW parliament. Shayesteh, on his website, praises Nile for being "a heart for this nation" and for his "support of what I am doing".
RAM's Grant Morgan said:"RAM is organising Voices of Peace as a positive alternative to their racism against Muslims. RAM supports the values of social inclusion, equal rights for all and world peace. We are heartened by the groundswell of support that Voices of Peace is receiving from grassroots people. And we are proud to have such a powerful voice for world peace as George Galloway on our platform," said Grant Morgan.

Dr Vishwanathan has put it really well when he says that we have to prevent the hijacking of the discourse. The language of ``geostrategic pragmatism`` that bomblovers speak is the language of the child in the playground who has realised that he too can be a bully.
I definitely want my country to stand up to the nuclear bullies but I do not want it to become one of them. How will we look the rest of the thrid world in the face after that?

Dr. Shiv asks:
How many Agni missiles did Gandhi have?
Well, that was one cool question..right?
Maybe he should also ask himself who Gandhi
was dealing with..
Maybe Dr.Shiv is right.. India doesn`t need
Agni or the nukes... when the *Jihad * actually
escalates and Pak gets ready to nuke India, we Indians can go on a satyagraha.. The kind
hearted pak military would just relent
and instead of nuking us, it would supply us
with gallons of orange juice.. all would end
well and we can live happily ever after.. very
very realistic..
I do not feel sorry for Indian tests nor do I
feel euphoric.. It is just one of those things..
But I`m surprised at the amount of anguish
these ``intellectuals`` express at the sudden
collapse of peace and the dismantling of
Panch-sheel and stuff `cos of the tests..
Who are we kidding by thinking that peace did exist before the tests and that panch-sheel did
achieve anything meaningful?

A voice of REASON atlast....nay, two voices. I hope they will be heard and understood and taken in the correct perspective. I particularly liked prof. shiv`s vitriloic style and his following comment -
* * * * * * *I appeal to our people and those in Pakistan to start a people to people foreign policy. Our states have run out of ideas for peace. * * * * * * * * *

India going nuclear has atleast achieved one objective and that is to USSR`ise Pakistan. Perhaps economic difficulties in Pakistan will weaken Pakistan’s resolve to deal with India on parity, however the fact remains that a nuclear economically fragmented Pakistan is a dangerous proposition.
It is rather sad to see that a nation which was 97% behind nuclear explosion is now looking for escape goats to hold responsible for the economic debacle the country has to face.
Will this nation realize that it is correct that sanctions have no immediate affect, but announcement of sanctions brought to memories the harsh economic boycott of Iraq, although Pakistani sanctions are no where close to the kind of sanctions Iraq is subjected. But the word sanctions from G-8 have resulted in mass loss of confidence. The ‘hot money’ mass escape and exodus could not be handled with meager a billion $ in reserves. India could get away with its nuclear explosion as its dependency on foreign exchange reserves was not as serious as Pakistan.
Pakistani have really never realized until this harsh moment that how much dependent their extravagance is to the goodwill of others. Our budget contains a section called as external resources these are consortium and IMF monies we get every year. We collect 300 billion rupees of revenues but have expenditure equal to Rs.600 billion . No one ever cared to ask who is filling the huge gap, we thought that free lunches will continue but the party prematurely stopped as soon we defied the will of our ‘master’.
Anyone who cannot appreciate this should look at run on a bank, if lender of last resort refuses to bail the bank out even 20% demand of depositors can lead the banks to go under. Similarly we need to know that once sanctions were announced it was a clear vote of no confidence from G-8. Our lender of last resort has been IMF for decades, now with G-8 controlling 48% voting strength on the board of IMF it was well established fact that IMF refusal will lead to a major gap in Pakistan finances. The decision to freeze $’s was a right one otherwise what we are facing today we would have faced on 29th May morning.
The run on the rupee is an outcome of many factors, one is flight of indirect investments from Pakistan and second is the mass conversion of rupee into $. On both the counts it is our policy to challenge western countries pressures. Now that chips are down the daggers are out. The nation which was prepared to eat grass is shorting its own currency for benefit of few rupees. It is nothing else but clear manifestation of selling their countries short. It was George Sorros who sold Ringgit but sad to see that Pakistanis are callously shorting their own currency for few $’s. Instead of finding faults with the policy makers think rationally, have we not lived long enough on borrowed money? Are we not spending far in excess of our capacities on our security? People ask where are the depositors $’s gone? My answer is Agostas and mine sweepers need $’s to buy also we like IPP’s just one of them took its entire capital out in a single year. Keep condemning the present government for all these problems. But the fact is that reason of our problems stem from multifold crises. From exorbitant foreign investments of IPP’s to our aggressive posturing on nearly every front. By the way all this high return investments and strategic posturing come at a price, we are paying for our actions. Time to unite and instead of finding escape goats lets try to cut our consumption and try to live within our means.

A thoughtful article indeed, from someone who deems himself to be quite a thoughtful person. I just wonder how you, Professor, would define progress. Years ago, in Islamabad, I followed a letter writing campaign of yours being carried in a local newspaper in which you were blasting a foreign trained doctor for protesting about her daughter being able to cover her head in school, in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. You stated that it was individuals such as this who were plunging our country into `darkness`. Now, years later, as we flex our scientific prowess to the world, you think that this is a backwards step as well. I would love for you to enlighten us as to what the way forward is.

I read both articles, which I thought were written in a balanced manner. In my opinion, neither India nor Pakistan can be solely blamed for the nuclear
proliferation. Both had clandestine nuclear programs that arose from a morbid fear of each other`s intentions. It is clear that India had an active program for years. It is also no secret that Pakistan had been getting China`s technology for years.
I do think that Kashmir (and I mean the whole of Kashmir, not just IOK or POK), is a fundamental issue that stands in the way of normal relations between the two countries. State sponsored terrorism by either nation in Kashmir is not going to solve the problem. As for the pleibiscite, it makes sense if you can restore the demographics that existed when the UN resolution was passed and not when the whole state is infiltrated with foreign mercenaries and the native Hindu population has been decimated/driven out.
Peace.

As for the pleibiscite, it makes sense if you can restore the demographics that existed when the UN resolution was passed and not when the whole state is infiltrated with foreign mercenaries and the native Hindu population has been decimated/driven out.
Peace.

I read both articles on the nuclear issue and am frankly surprised at the lack of faith the writers have on our ability to handle the nuclear deterent with complete safety and resposibility as has been the case thus far from the mid 1980s.
The real issue is the brutal state sponsered terrorism in Indian Occupied Kashmir.
I would like to see the two writers right those wrongs commited against the Kashmiri population through informing their students and colleagues and the media.
