well i also agree that new books r expensive to buy......and belive me........people wont mis it ........they have stpres like liberty books and OPP to spend money.....and the old and the footpath books are always there......for us poor folks..also the pirated ones...
and as far as people missing their old sweet bookstore...........well it happens...laces change......the rotten ones r demolished and popular ones constructed........hard facts

So what? Buying books, esp. new books, are too expensive anyway, what is needed is more libraries.

I have been away from Karachi for a while. I hope Thomas & Thomas is still there.

In Pakistan, I never had enough money to buy the new books that I wanted to. Which, I guess, is why book shops are closing down. Books are expensive in the first place, adverse exchange rate etc; not enough people buy them, which means printing them locally is out of the question.

I don`t know if there is a simple solution. Maybe we should be going for books printed in India, they are cheaper. Vanguard Book Store in Lahore has lots of books printed in India and does good business.

Also, there are some great places to buy second-hand books. The Juma bazar in Karachi used to have some nice book stalls, also some nice ones at Regal on Friday. The Old Book Shop in Lahore is also very good. In fact, I did get one or two first editions from there.

I believe a store by the same name has opened in Phase v, stadium commercial. maybe it is a case of customer location rather than degeneration per se.

I hope so very much. Finding books one wants is dreadfully tough as it is.

Yes I had heard that Pak Ammerican had shutdown, but I did not know that it was being replaced by the KFC - the symbolism is hard to swallow.

Couple of months ago, Saad from Karachi, in response to a piece by Saad Shafqat, had commented on the Chowk about KFC replacing PAB.

Publishing industry is in pathetic shape. With population in millions, the initial run of a book is between 1000 to 2000 copies only.

Pakistan American Bookstore had to follow Yusufi`s Sabghay & Sons.

As for KFC----halaal licking good.
