So far it has always been tact of all the politicians to distract the public from focusing on the main issues. They always do the eye-wash by using the name of islam, kala-bagh, shia-sunny, Majar-Pathan, etc. And the sorry state is that every time they get successful by engaging the people in useless or less important arguments. Everybody knows that Nawaz has not been able to do any good for the economy so far and his last blow was freezing the foreign currency accounts which not only disoppointed foriegn investment but also pakistani people now have lost the faith in pakistani banking.

After his failure he is trying couple of things to distract the people like - Kala Bagh or Shariat bill??

We Pakistani have very weak memory. And funny thing is we are the only nation in the world which can be exploited on the same issue again and again...

One major factor of that is illeteracy. People dont have the awareness what is right or wrong for them. And they lack collective thinking.. That`s why every time we give our fate in the hands of in-competent people.

I think the only solution for pakistan is to provide ``quality education`` to the masses. If we give good quality education to every child today then the generation which will come after 10,15 years would be capable in itself to change the fate of this country.

Thanks

Rehman Zafar

Megolomaniacs generally do make a mockery of what is known as ``democracy`` .... in Pakistan we are seeing the truth of ``total power corrupts totally`` whoever the man or woman at the top. Is it because of historical, monarchical tendencies, historical subjugation, short-sightedness caused by sycophants, unbounded materialism ... or just plain greed/lust ...lust for power....self-aggrandizement ...greed for money...?

Excellent article Ms. Sarwar, very impressive.

Pakistani society has such dual standards that its not even funny.

A friend of mine just came from Karachi for a reunion and she acted like she just got out of jail after a long time. Then she started telling me about how bad the condition of women have become over the years in Pak and how she dreaded to get out, even for a little while.

I was shocked by some of the things she told me for example, she was abused by a mullah in ‘Itewar Bazar’ for wearing shorts sleeves….she also told me other incidences.

On the other hand she tells me about how McDonalds, Subway etc etc are doing so good!!! (Symbols of Western Influence), she also tells me about all the Keelabs (Sapphire lounge) that have popped up everywhere.......as I said the most dual standard society I have ever known.

Well, I guess our country is nothing else but a soap opera.

Kudos to you,

Anwar

The real tragedy of Pakistan is not what is, but what could have been.

oh no! these propaganda films sound awful. anyone remember those songs:

``pakistan ka matlab kiya? la-ilaha-il-allah``

(talk about turning one of the foundations/pillars of islam -- the kalima-e-tayyaba into a cheap jingle!)

and what about:

``har ghari taiyyar kamran hain hum
jaisay hone haalat shadmaan hain hum
upnay mulk-o-qaum ke nighaybaan hain hum
pakistani fauj kay jawaan hain hum``

eeeeyoooooo. i am gagging as i write it.

why are we doomed to repeat this ugly history?

anyway,...good article.

A very thought provoking article. Need more like these !! I recommed you to watch a french movie made by an Algerian called (in english) ``Where Women Tread``. Remember the old phrase ``Maan Kay Pairon Talay Janat`` but what about just a woman without being a mother, sister or wife????
