Dear Mr. Siddiqui,
I liked your article. Thanks! I think a year or so ago I read a series of articles comparing Noor Jahan and lata Mageshkar as well. Those were really good. If you can, please email them to me. I have lost my copies.
Anyway, can you please let us know exactly what Lata Mangeshkar had to say about Noor Jahan? I would be very grateful.
Also, if you want to get in touch, you can email me at allyadnan@hotmaiul.com. I am a Pakistanian settled in the United States. I used to work as a journalist (The Herald, The Nation, She etc) writing primarily about classical Pakistanian and Indian music. And I do share your admiration for both Lata Mageshkar and Noor Jahan, although I do think that Lat, albeit a remarkably talented singer, is not in Noor Jahan`s league; Noor Jahan is by far the superior singer.

REally good...I`m jealous that I could not have attended the concert as well. Glad to see an appreciation of these great singers...but how could you seriously overlook Rafi or Kishor?
My own observation is Pakistan has been the haven of women singers, Noor Jehan, Iqbal Banu, Farida Khanum, Munni Begum, Mussarat Nazir, the great and wonderous Abida Parveen. which is ironic in many ways. Lata and Asha by force of their stature and dominance of the scene over the last forty years has left little room for new buds to flower. This is, to my mind, how Pakistan and India popular music cultures balance each other. And the diversity of folk (lok geet) in Pakistan is amazing whereas in India technology, a demanding middle class and other factors have pushed lok geet to the very fringes.
Nice work. And just for comparison. I love Chalte Chalte but by far the best song on Pakeeza, for sheer fun, not shairi, is Yeh Mausam hai Ashiqana.

It is always a treat to listen to the singers of the subcontinent here in the US. The humility of Lata Mangeshkar is truly a sign of greatness, perhaps even more so than her haunting songs.

Lata ka jawab nahin
Noor Jehan ka jawab nahin
laikin
Shakeel Pathan ki baat hi aur hay.
It is awfully inappropriate to compare these three. The former two are artists par excellence. But Shakeel Pathan with his conviction, courage and dedication surprised even the most die-hard dedicated members of the Pakistan Human Rights Commission.
