Re: YLH
First of all, please do not misquote me. I have said, in my earlier post, that is idea is nothing more than an utopian non-sense. It is an impractical idea and because of the historic memories, which still haunt us, it will never occur. So, please do not yell at me, because like the typical Pakistani, you are willing to kill the messanger, because you did not like the message he was carrying.
My objections to your posts were due to the fact, as you have astutely pointed, the debate on this topic is meaningless and a waste of time. However, YLH, if you disagree with the article, then please say so and leave it that. Why do you have to rave and shout and hurl personal insults on everyone who disagrees with you?
For the record, and your personal enlightenment, I do not support this idea and I had said so, and thought that I would leave it at that, but you choose to personalize our tete a tete by labelling me as the champion of this non-sense.
Fine, please label me, because I am not afraid of defending free speech and hearing different ideas I do not agree with as you seem to be!
One thing I would like to add as a comment to your post # 39. You say that your hatred of Indians is based on a principled stand. Hate, my friend, is never based on a principled stand, but on the person`s own personal prejudices and fears.
Lets agree to disagree and leave it at that!
Ciao!

Re: Jagdeep #65
I am sorry if you didnot imply me to be a fundamentalist, and I apologise.
I didnot try to tell that we have nothing common socially with Pakistanis. As it happens, Mehdi Hasan is my favorite singer, and I also like Ghulam Ali and Nusrat Fateh Ali. I like the poetry of Faiz and Ahmad Faraz. So there is no chance of my thinking there is no commonality. All I wanted to say was there is no commonality in a political sense other than between two neighbors, and as no one in India thinks about unifications with China, Burma, etc., there is no point in talking about unification with Pakistan, as it just vitiates the atmosphere and I cant think of its advisability, even for India, as we have problems enough of our own.
Also, my thinking this way doesnot exclude a chance of bettering relations with Pakistan in any way. People have been bettering relations without going mushy about reunification dreams, you know!
ASK - I absolutely agree with you. India`s future lies with southeast Asia. And Tamils are in a leading position to be India`s conduit to Singapore, Malaysia, etc. As a guy from relatively backward northern parts, I say, all power to you compadre... On to the Southeast....

All Pakistani`s (as all Indians) are not a homogenous community. The following quotes are from an op-ed in Dawn - `Is this our highway to heaven` at the following URL
http://www.dawn.com/2000/06/28/op.htm
...
``It needs to be asserted with emphasis that no Islamic group, camp or party of any note or standing supported the Pakistan movement. Most of them were malignantly disposed to the very concept of Pakistan because they knew Jinnah was not an obscurantist and could never be cajoled or compelled to be one. ...
``They say Islam is not against progress. Most certainly not. But the mullahs are. They have monopolized Islam in Pakistan. They oppose every invention, every innovation, every new idea, every
modern facility and amenity, only to exploit it later with a vengeance. They have opposed modern
education, telephone, sound amplifiers (loudspeakers), photography, cinema, banking, fine arts, female education, technology, and what have you. ...
``No sensible person would care to deny that religion is noble. But it remains so only so long as it is protected from impostors posing as pious holy men, intimidating simple human beings with the flaming visions of hell hereafter. In Pakistan every Muslim citizen knows his faith. The problem is not with Islam but with the fake professional preachers for whom Islam is a profession, a calling, bread and butter, commerce, comfort, and an instrument of blackmail.
``Not a single Islamic political party has so much as mentioned [poverty, illiteracy, lack of civic services] ills that are corroding the nation from inside. None of them is talking of the rights of the child, of women, of the handicapped and the disabled, of the victims of slavery, of justice so difficult to secure, of denial of redress against injustice. ... ``
dL
... whats all the argument ... focus on the real issues !

You say
``HaiN aur bhi ghum zamanay maiN mohabbat kay siwa....
I agree with you but with clarifications.
The many replies to this article will illustrate the problems Indians and Pakistanis both face. The problem is that the architect keeps going back to the drawing board, nateeja, all we have is a load of blueprints and no house even after so many years.
As an Indian, I`m not in favor of providing the `leaders of society` any more excuses to play hooky from their real day jobs, which is providing good governance and assuring a decent life to everyone to their country. Politicians and intellectuals talk vision, but do nothing to bring it about then go talk another vision to mask their failures and get tenure.
The best and most logical confederation will happen automatically when Indians and Pakistanis are secure, confident and happy, with enough food to eat, with their children`s future and safety of life and limb assured. We have enough tools to achieve all that, lets use them. Spending time in the clouds is not going to bring THAT about.

Ok first of all Chowk staff .... once again you have done the balls ... you can publish such an article but you censored my post ....
The question I will like to ask RSaxena is that since he hates us ... and believe me I hate him ... why does he keep interacting with us????
And while you are at it ... tell me how many times have you seen Pakistanis going on to predominantly Indian sites to interact with Indians??? What is this obsessive preoccupation with Pakistan that Indians have ??? Why do they insist on giving us their unneeded, unwarranted, and annoying two cents?????
Please leave Pakistan to us ....
As for Feroze K .... again I will like to point out that a Utopia to me will be a Perfect Pakistan not a Unified South Asia ....
And let me also make it clear that maybe in 1920s
a compromise was possible .... maybe in the 1940s if the Congress Party accepted the Cabinet Mission plan that Jinnah did ... Maybe India would have stayed together as a confederation but it was the Congress Party that rejected it ...
Also remember that before Pakistan was made ... such solutions might have been viable to Indian Muslims (solutions that were denied to them by their Hindu countrymen) .... but to a Pakistani born in Pakistan like myself, Pakistan is the motherland ... Pakistan is my country ... and any talk reunification is not acceptable to me because
I for one was never an Indian, and never will be
Inshallah .....

And Iahmed .... let me tell you something else ..
dont even start making assumptions ...
1)I never went to a Pakistani school in my life
2)How does my view that Jinnah wanted a secular Pakistani state come directly from some text book?????
Which one of my arguments is based on text book knowledge????
Honestly I am so upset right now that I am on verge of tears ...
if I choose to love my country why am I criticized for that??????
Why is that if I say that we want to exist as a NATION SEPERATELY that I am criticized ......
Why is it that eveyone here these PSEUDO INTELLECTUALS, sacrifice everything that we hold dear as a self respecting nation to prove to others that they are intellectuals ...
Why is that if a completely foreign educated person like myself chooses to take pride in his own country that he is told that he is just suffering from the inadequacy of the educational system in Pakistan...
If anyone cares to remember ... I never said anything against India untill I came across the ridiculuous views of Indians ....
The truth is 99% of the people in Pakistan dont desire reunification or for that matter the fact that something like this can happen is not even in their psyche ... we were born Pakistanis .... we will continue to be so ....

TO THIS GUY IAHMED
FIRST OF ALL I NEVER WENT TO A PAKISTANI SCHOOL SO
This guy iahmed is obviously a new comer ... and he has made some assumptions .. DONT MAKE ASSUMPTIONS ABOUT ME ...
Pakistan was not made in the name of Islam !!!!
If this guy had cared to read my posts or read History would know more ... the irony is that these people speak without even bothering to read
PAKISTAN WAS MADE TO SHIELD THE MUSLIMS OF SOUTH ASIA (WHO CONSTITUTE A DISTINCT NATION NOT ON THE BASIS OF RELIGIOUS BELIEFS ONLY BUT CULTURE LANGUAGE AND A COMMON HISTORY) FROM THE TYRANNY OF THE MAJORITY .......
A NATION IN ITS WESTERN CONCEPT ... WHICH I PARTICULARLY LIKE .... IS THAT A COMMON CULTURE IS WHAT MAKES A NATION ....
SO IN THE WORDS OF ZIYA GOLKALP (IDEOLOGICAL MENTOR OF ATATURK) ``RELIGION INSPIRES CULTURE`` ...
AND IT IS TRUE ... SO IF YOU WANT TO ATTACK MUSLIM NATIONALISM ... PLEASE DO ... BUT DONT SAY THAT IT IS BORROWED FROM A PAKISTANI TEXT BOOK BECAUSE IN PAKISTANI TEXTBOOKS YOU WILL NOT FIND STATEMENTS LIKE ``JINNAH WANTED A KEMALIST STATE`` WHICH I TRULY BELIEVE .....
PEOPLE LIKE IAHMED TRULY NEED TO READ MORE ... AND MAKE LESS ASSUMPTIONS ....!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kabuli Wallah and iahmed both have accused me of things without even researching the truth ..
Once again may I say that my knowledge doesnot come from a Pakistan Studies Textbook because I really never went to a Pakistani school ....
Since to Indians all Pakistanis (except a tiny minority which is against the two nation theory) are biased ... and also because all pro Pakistan western scholars are also biased ... I am going to mention a book by a congress party worker who fought for independence in the 1940s and is an ardent admirer of Mohandas Karam Chand Gandhi and is a Hindu and an Indian ....
The book is
Quaid e Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah and the creation of Pakistan
