I think what Sadhana is saying(with her usual thoughtfulness) is that our social wisdom is not on par with our scientific achievements. We screwed the planet`s ecology and the environment - do we also have to mess with its evolution?
You mention eugenics - you must also mention the medical and socio-ethical issues that are tied to this field (and it will be a while before the third world debates about them, if at all). Where do you stop with eugenics - you pick the color of your skin, the color of your eyes, your features, resistance to known diseases... what are you trying to create - Hitler`s dream race???

fairdinkum,
what do you call a person who is prejudiced against another religion? hmmm..how about idiot? oh..no..wait..that wont do..because according to certain self proclaimed keepers of the Islamic faith here that would include me. so how about `my angel` or `you gorgeous creature you` or simply `jaaan`.
kant patel,
in an earlier post you asked if my being a member of a minority made me more objective..may i ask what minority you believe i`m part of?
urstruly and ylh,
this is a serious question. both of you make constant references to books, texts etc etc. isn`t it possible to aquire the same knowledge and make the same conclusions through simply observing what goes on around you?

SILENCE OF THE WIMPS,
On chowk there is a medicene man who is also the peace and religious harmony keeper. When it comes to taking on the fellow pakistanis, he knows his verse, he knows his book, he knows pretty well about the fatwa, he knows the lynch mob, he knows that in pakistan a kafir has been charged with blasphemy for making fun of the beard of a muslim, he knows that criticising the accepted norms of pakistan could lead to lynch mob being sent to the relatives back home. Yes, silence, silence to post # 291, then how do I know that the poster is a pakistani, it is simple, fatwafobia.

Dost-Mittar#
That much I remember from the text book regarding Kafiristan and Kafirs.
They are also known as Kalash people.
As far as my memory goes, they have good dances. Their pictures can be seen on tourism posters. etc.
As far as Nuristan, that is possible considering some PIOUS rulers in past, but I have no knowledge of it.

``To read sarcasm as truth shows your command over the language...``
Same to you :)
``In any event I assure you that there isnt any such text in any school in Pakistan which has K for Kafir and Z for Zalim ..``
OK is Dawn more authoritative than one Mr. YLH ? The answer is yes, according to me. What do you say?
``Now if some writer wrote a hate book ... I am sure I can find you 1001 books against Muslims and Pakistanis ...``
And I thought I said a Pakistani textbook and not a hate book by ``some author``.
``Satyavadi please visit Pakistan ... or are you afraid of the truth???``
No, I am afraid of the Jehadis :). JK. Actually, its my bank balance. But I can try if
1. u agree to host me and
2. u agree not to lecture me on the merits of TNT, Jinnah`s greatness, Kashmiri oppression and India`s doublespeak. :)

Hey, that Kafir bit was from a Dawn column and I donot retain columns from Dawn in my internet folder. Not worth it. Now if you think its a lie, than its your perception, you are entitled to it. I have better things to do than to search through Dawn archives for that article.
``Anyway even if it not in text book, atrocities of Indian forces in Kashmir are evident with the full support of Indians.``
Why the K word here too. Obsessions and things like that, they say.

Shhhhhhhh. Dont spill the beans. You will get your due :)
``Thou sayeth.. I`m not sure what. Is that an argument against what I said? Do Pakistanis around here go saying `K for Kafir`? Granted, i gotta investigate some textbooks when i get back.. Who brought the whole `K for Kafir` bit, anyway? I`ve completely forgotten where that article came from.``
That article came from Dawn. I brought the Kafir bit in response to one Sarwari`s self-righteous ignoratn comment about India`s treatment of its minorities. And Pakistani`s here donot go about saying K for Kafir. Only some Urdu text back home does, according to a Dawn columnist.
OK, now shoot..
Satyavadi
Satyavadi and other Indians ...
To read sarcasm as truth shows your command over the language... In any event I assure you that there isnt any such text in any school in Pakistan which has K for Kafir and Z for Zalim ..
I bet you all 1 million Dollars, and believe me I ll give you 1 million dollars if you find a text like that for Kids or adults... Now if some writer wrote a hate book ... I am sure I can find you 1001 books against Muslims and Pakistanis ...

Re. Sadna (#302), fairdinkum
Sadhanji! ``Disturbing``?!?
While I can see many dangers in the practice of eugenics, I can think of nothing more wonderful than the ability to save a life through genetic screening -- in this case not even risking another!
And I can think of many worse reasons for having babies that go uncondemned.
In the end, every new advance in medical science will being with it thequestion of whether we may play God. I suspect there were the same concerns regarding blood tranfusions when they were first performed. They was, certainly, opposition to the use of anaethesia in childbirth (by the Catholic Church - no less!) because it contradicted the prophecy that ``the Woman would be made t osuffer during childbirth``.
Ah well, maybe that`s another issue altogether.

P

Rsaxena, when you were 20 years old .. maybe you read superman comics and maybe your face was full of acne ... Myself... I stopped reading SUperman comics way back and never had pimples...
Now ... one incident and you are willing to negate
the 50 years of cooperation and goodwill that exists between the nations of Pakistan and Turkey .. did you know that Turkey supported Pakistan militarily, financially and in resources in both 1965 and 1971 ....
I spoke at the Turkish Students Association meeting recently and all of them burst into song ...Jeevay Jeevay Pakistan ... I swear to God that this happened... How many times has a Turkish students Association burst into song for India?????
The ties and bonds that our two nations have ... is something you will never have....
YES right now Turkey is not very supportive of our endeavours in Afghanistan but ask any average TURK and this is a challenge ... Ask any average Turk and they will tell you that ``KASHMIR belongs to Pakistan`` ......
They refer to Muhammad Ali Jinnah as Jinnah Pasha
in Turkey ... do they do the same for Nehru or Gandhi ???????
Correct me if I am wrong but wasnt this Prime MInister Bulent Ecevet character in jail in 1980 for being the enemy of secularism??????
You naivety is evident from your responses!!!!!!!!!
Age is no guarantee of sagacity....

{And what you call all those religions, faith, beliefs, etc. that show prejudice towards other religions, beliefs, celebrations, etc.!]
----Since I care and since you asked, let me quote Mahajirzadeh --- “Pehlay Khuda phir Rasool: Pehlay Insaan phir musallmaan.”
I know of no major religion that displays outright contempt and bigotry for any other religion. They may put down or dismiss an earlier religion to emphasize and contrast it with the former -- but that is the extent.
Also, I believe what you are alluding to is the FAULTY of the practitioners of those religions. Hardly the fault of the gospel itself.

PS: Apologies to BOTH Sadhana and Shandana. Signed and notarized formal apologies will be mailed separately when my attorney returns from her vacation trip to Kandahar. Perhaps I should change the ‘when’ to ‘if and when’? And if I do that, will I be branded an optimist, pessimist or realist? TGIF.

a) Who cares what some kid wrote on a PSA web-site at Rutgers out of all the places
b) Maybe the Turkish-Pakistani similarities were why the Turkish PM SNUBBED a Paki invitation to visit the country on his way to India. And maybe that`s why he joined ABV in moaning about ``cross-border terrorism``.
Grow up and face the reality. This isn`t a Superman comic book.
