Urstruly #242 Who exactly are these `-em` that Farangi Kush is hurting? All I see is a lot of hot air and grandiose words and space-hogging and name-calling without anything specific.

(sigh!) Another one bites the dust, eh!?
Btw, would you happen to know what`s the latest subject of discussion these days at the madarassas in Qumm or Damascus? Have they figured out the question of how many djinns it would take to produce 10kw of electricity yet? You`d think 20-30 years of study would be enough to resolve these questions, eh? Well, if they have done so, maybe they could work on the `how many angels can dance on a pintoop` puzzle. The poor Middle Aged monks spent their lives trying to figure out that one with no success, I think ...or maybe my westernized, rationalistic mind is too small to comprehend questions of such galactic proportions.

Bohuth Shukryaa,burree mehrbaanee.
Ramzaan mubarak to you & all.
I had to call someone to be sure too.It is Innaa & not Inkaa.
Urstruly:
Thank you very much.
A true-life story with the same tempo & drama was written & published long time ago. That was about the infamous `asghari begum` incident.
I do not know where I can find it now.

Calm down. What`s with posting these long monologues which put people to sleep half way without even giving a clue as to what the point is?

Well, there is some misunderstanding of some principles somewhere -- how independent are the Pakistani judiciary from influence of the Muslim clerics ? Certainly a voluminous judgement -- full of hot air or of scholarship ?

ISLAMABAD, Dec 23: Pakistan`s Supreme Court today declared ``riba`` or interest, is un-Islamic and told the country`s government to introduce an interest- free economic system by the year 2001, the official APP news agency said, report agencies.
It said a four-judge bench of the Islamic country`s top court issued the ruling in Lahore, holding ``the riba against the saying of the holy prophet Mohammad (SM) and Quran and Sunnah`` (traditions of the prophet).
In a 1,000-page judgement the Supreme Court today said charging interest was against Islamic teachings, a decision that seems certain to require sweeping changes to this poor country`s banking system.

There are different Islam for different people.
But on the principle of interest, Islam is clear.
No Interest. Interest means a fixed or variable profit without risk out of investment.
Trade is allowed and appreciated, which means risk of profit or loss by investment.
I don`t think there is any question in Islam in that.
People try to bypass it by saying real worth of money depreciates with time. But it cannot be elevated by interest to its original value. They have to find some other way of Islamizing Interest.

Whatever one endeavours to pursue(to discuss or do) should have the sense to know that they are at least at the entry level.
These are VERY serious subjects & matters.Far Far more than the highest level of science.Amazingly, every Tom,Dick & Jane somehow cosiders this as free territory & declares open season here.
Houston Smith,a committed agnostic,Bill Moyers & others invite learned people from other faiths on various channels and carry out conversations because which a toddler like me anxiously awaits the time when he can walk a little.Houston Smith even wrote the preface to Hussein Nasr`s book, and the preface itself is well worth the book.
Hussein Nasr:Harvard Phd.in Physics at the age of nineteen.Quit the faculty because of the orthodoxy & `mullah-ism` of scientific community. Gave up the highest office as Chairman of Science Academy in Iran during Shah`s debauchery-days and started out as an explainer of Islam to the ``modern``(read:dis-illusioned)
reader.
Out of his numerous books (30/40),all in great demand & reprinted many times,``A young North American muslims` guide to Islam`` would not hurt even those who are not so young.

It has been a known heinous practice in the western world to bring under discussion & debate that which they choose to demolish & destroy.Whenever one`s motive is to bridge and reach-out one tries to overlook, glossover and & feign that there is no difference.Just a couple of months ago some Indian students on a trip to Pakistan were ga ga over the fact that how similar `we` were.Would you want to ruin that by doing an in-depth,intellectually-pricking and scalpel-in-hand ``analysis`` to verify this?Would you want a happily newly-wed couple to set aside time to compare the feature and attributes of each others` in-laws?And continue this urge to investigate & know the differences in their children`s personnas AND announce to the hapless creatures of their daily exercise?
On a lighter note:(joke):
Two friends were taking a walk together. One of them was a Devoted Research Afficiondo(a.k.a fanatic) DRA for short.
DRA spotted something along the pathway. He was curious to know what it was.
``Forget it,let us move on``...his friend urged.
But DRA wants to know more.``It looks like a turd!`` DRA beamed.
``OK so let us go``
``NO,No we must ascertain ourselves``.So he bent and smelled it.``60% I`m sure it is so``
``Move,Move``
But then DRA went on to poke the smelly piece announced 80% and proceeded to the finale to announce his 100% satisfaction that indeed it was a turd.
``I had told you that right in the beginning``.
``No``,said DRA``we must do research & analysis first.
Then he proceeded to clear the pathway triumphantly.

Zahra #200, ``Was the food bad? Or the jam session
caused some havoc in her system? Or the people? What caused the heartburn?``
All of the above except the people (not counting the snobs of NAMAPAK).
``there is NO connection of Baint Singh`s episode with this piece. It makes this whole episode sound disconnected and artificial.``
Just my thoughts, nothing fancy :). The fact that I thought of him mostly when I came back home has something to do with his inclusion. I basically wrote what I felt, without a thought to how people would feel when they read it.
As for Beant Singh, it`s not about who deserves more sympathy. When people like us stop being selfish and think of others lives, it only matters that we at least think of them. We appreciate their lives and the differences they make to ours.
And we remember them. Had I not made the mental effort to put myself in his position, my evening wouldn`t be as memorable or significant.
I have something to remember besides the haute couture outfits and forced smiles.
I appreciate your criticism. Out of these 240 posts, yours is probably number 5 or 6 which critiques my article :)).
Thanks.

Would some of you please try to write more succinctly? So many of the posts are painfully long, require reading through 5000 lines to get the message, and take up too much space (one has to scroll through several different pages to read all the recent posts).
Freaks.

``I`ve been there, seen it,done that.As you already know I am a product of the ba ba blacksheep system....perhaps more than most here, you included.``
THis is intersting... tell us more about your world, oh wise one... so far, we`ve learnt that there are only two colours (black and white), two kinds of people (free-thinkers and non-thinkers), and now it seems that there exists only one angle (to turn): 180 degrees. hmmm... interesting.
Zahra, how about this one for your next case study on ``I`m neurotic `cause of my dyfunctional upbringing`` personalities?
dost mittar (#229)
Thanks for that informative post.
pankaj (#228)
A little simplistic, don`t you think? Scientific theories are, almost by definition, open to refinement/enhancement. Not all religions are.
regards,
PM

Sadna, RSaxena, Jay or any Educated Hindu,
I am genuinely interested to know whether this point, `you cannot convert to Hinduism` is true.` Why is this so and if it`s true, isn`t it a form of fascism? Does this then imply that Non Hindus do not undergo the re-incarnating process that Hindus undergo. Does that then mean that Bad Hindus can enjoy their life, be cruel to others and then convert to another religion because the Hindu Gods and Hindu rules only apply to Hindus. Does it also mean that. That way they shall not reincarnate into an Untouchable. Also The numbers of Hindus have grown over the centuries. Where have those extra sould come from if everything is recycled.
I`d appreciate your replies as I`m genuinely interested.

In response to my statement that ``Solitude has a point when he says that for Muslims get along harmoniously with the rest of the world, they must reject/ignore at least some of the basic injunctions...``
you wrote:
``--No, no, no. That is NOT what he is saying. He is saying reject/ignore the religion COMPLETELY ... ``
I think you misunderstood my use of the infinitives. To rephrase, modern `moderate` Muslims living in pluralistic societies DO reject/ignore .... in order to live peacably.
regards and ramzan-ul-mubarak greetings,
