Harimau

You had said on another board that YLH will sing praises of the Khilafat. It is interesting that people like you have chosen that line of Attack.

I have never supported the Khilafat, and have always been Ataturk`s biggest fan and that of Secularism.

Kindly read before you utter such complete rubbish.

Kindly refer to Bertrand Russel`s tireless Campaign for Bhutto`s cause in the late 1960s, and his writings on Pakistan. Also read his letters to Nasser, Nixon etc.

Dear Shirin,

I would like to thank you on two accounts; first for writing your post and sharing your experiences with us and second at a personal level to help me pull out of a delima that I was in for quite a while. The three words that did the trick were ``Benefit of Doubt`` (in your post).

Now, I think that we must keep on helping people whenever we can, always giving them a benefit of doubt; unless it is as clear when you saw those women buying stuff after selling their medicine, with your own eyes.

Thanks again for the nice words for me too. It was good talking to you.

shankar #128 you write ``I`ve lived in small town,USA & the friends I socialise with have a different concept of what is good mannered & what isnt.``

I think you have been adequately chastised. While we are on the subject: I wonder if you have heard about the reason some people have so much trouble joining religious orders? The reason is that no matter how hard they try to say ``Mother Superior`` correctly, the words come out as ``Mother F-----``.

shankar #128,

This is nothing limited desi people, I would be equally disturbed if a gora said the equivalent ``C`` word in English.

If you could find equivalent profanities for male genitalia in Hindi/Urdu/English, and let me use them frequently (and not judge me) we`d be even.

But those profanities are hard to find. Usually women and their bodies are made the brunt of jokes and obscenities. Just goes to show how ingrained male chauvanism is in our society, Eastern or Western.

But I agree to disagree. Freedom of opinion rite?

PS..may I at least crack some jokes about the penis god though?

Dont you think that is a wee bit ``sexist``, notto mention as polictically incorrect in these times where the femisists are using the word Goddess to depict that highest diety? Not that i am a feminist or anything, but i shall have to concur with them, that Goddesses do exist, specially in the region of the aurora borealis(near Norway).

Sincerely,

Asim

shankar #126 I agree with dost-mittar that references to genitalia are not a good idea. Leave such references to people who think that references to genitalia can compensate for their inability to say anything intelligent, and get them attention.

Re: krashid

So what is your final verdict on homosexuality? Are you for it or against it? Is it Islamic or un-Islamic? Do the little boys belong in the madrassah or not? You have written quite a bit about it...I figure you might want to give Chowkwallahs a summary of your thoughts.

scout,

{{I thought I was the only one disturbed by the profanities. Thanks for showing the respect others sometimes forget.}}

OK I got the message. I`m sincerely sorry & apologise to one & all who found my language illmannered. I`ll try my best not to do it anymore.

This may sound like an excuse..er, well, it is:), though I admit it may sound like a pretty lame one to many. I`ve been away from the subcontinent for 25 years . Most of my family is here, so I`ve gone there only every about 10yrs or so. I`ve lived in small town,USA & the friends I socialise with have a different concept of what is good mannered & what isnt. My contact with other desis is sparse & strictly professional.

Many of the Americans I socialise with (both men & women) can get quite raunchy in their humor. Dont get me wrong, they are decent people & their moral behavior & values are no better or worse than the the desis I`ve encountered. My friends come from every profession--both blue & white collared & some of them are much more educated than I.

Just my personal opinion (maybe you guys have had vastly different experiences in the West); moral behaviour & values among Americans is just as good or bad as those in India. In fact, I find the way desis in our town act towards Americans & between themselves quite different. Of course, there are exceptions, but by & large they are more hypocritical, narrow minded & prejudiced than the local population. As to how they conduct themselves , er shall I say, in matters of sexual propriety--hah! its a joke. In matters of making money & evading taxes--Americans are saints compared to them. Dont everybody pounce on me for making such sweeping generalisations. If you guys have different opinions or experiences; lets just agree to disagree.

I didnt intentionally want to be ill mannered or hurt anyone`s feelings or be disrespectful. If you tell me ``you ought to know better, what did your parents teach you?!``--all I can say is ``I`m guilty, as charged--seems like I`ve forgotten what they taught me``. I sincerely apologise for that.

Er..can we still be friends, though:) I like arguing with a spicy sherni like you... I`ll watch my mouth, I promise:)

dost-mittar,

{{The expressions from Bombay`s kholis are not natural for a man of your vintage; especially when one of the readers is someone you tease as kid sister.}}

My apologies to you (& anyone else) if you find my language jarring.

Tell you what---if my kid sister tells me to stop, I will!

PS..may I at least crack some jokes about the penis god though?

Urstruly # 57 RE:The Fallen Angel

The sentiments you have shared here , are very touching. It is so, so sad to see little children land up in such a mess , especially in the days which are supposed to be the least worrisome , and the most enjoyable for them.

You seem like a very kind hearted and genuine person, both these qualities a delight to see!

When i was doing my internship in one of the government hospitals in pakistan, i got to see life from a very close angle. The closest way to describe ir , perhaps may be

``Dekha hai zindagi ko kuch itnae Kareeb sey,

lagnae lagae hain tumam chehray ajeeb sey ``

[This verse is from old memory , so if i have quoted it wrong , please correct it , thanks !]

It was just not fair !The disparity among the classes , began to disgust me.We dont know how lucky and fortunate we are , and at times just take things for granted and forget to thank Him, and at the same time there is the inner cry ``But why ?``

One day i was seeing patients in the medical out patients department[O.P.D.] a few young patients came. They somehow had the same complaint ``Bacha bahut bemar hai, dawa chahiyae ``.There was no bacha with them ,so it was very difficult to prescribe anything. They took out a crunched up prescription about 2 weeks old, written by one of the Drs. and explained they had come for refills. They wanted ``Antibiotic suspensions ``, an antipyretic [panadol syrup]in those days was what was dispensed , and vitamins. They said ``Faida ho raha hai , magar dawa khatam ho gai hai ``.At the end of the O.P.D. when you have seen over 100 patients, in the span of 5 hrs. one is left so mentally worn out, that one does not debate over the legitimacy of the request, so i just prescribed the same stuff , and off went these happy women.

On the intersection between the O.P.D. and the college were a few ``Thelas ``, selling odds and ends .I found these women buying purandas and bangles. Later i was awared that this was very common practice for a certain variety,to come and get medicines, sell them at half the price [ which for them was no big deal as they got the medicines free ]and do ``small shopping with that money ``.Disgust filled me so much , that after that i told myself if anyone came near me ,with the common complaint of wanting to buy a medicine , i would just shoot them on the instant.I became very heartless .One day i was going into one of the general stores in clifton. An old man was sitting on the steps with his daughter , the daughter begging for money from every passer by. i was apparoached too, but the incident i had witnesed earlier was still in my system so i just kept walking on. The little girl was almost in tears , ``Dawa khareedni hai `` , ``Baap key leiyae ``.I paused for a while ,and asked the girl ,``kya takleef hai ?``.She showed me a small wound on the arm of her father . it was rather raw , and would have been very painful too.My conscience ,and the disgust within me ,were playing tag ! the conscience won, so i decided to get her medicine, not give her any money. Well she can sell it, too like many others have been doing and get some candies for herself, i thought mercileesly. I bought the relevant ointment and handed it over to her , and walked back towards my car. As i started my car, i just looked from the rear view mirror, that the little girl was still sitting there , and applying the ointment to her father`s wound, both father and daughter very happy over the treasure they had received .

After that day i have reformed my thinking to a large extent. When unsure i somehow land up always giving into ``the benefit of doubt ``.

In this great university of life , where we are all perpetual students , there is so much to learn from simple incidents , which somehow stay with us for a lifetime. We learn something new every day, something to keep the ``Humaness`` within us from withering away!

Regards,

Shirin
