....simply beautiful! the following poem by another great mathematician-poet brought tears to my eyes :

``Three thousand six hundred and one

Times eight hundred and seventy three

Is three million one hundred

And forty three thousand

Six hundred and seventy three``

.....OK so like we will dispense with ‘Arc ( Arc : Mathematics. A segment of a circle) by awkward rhombus (An equilateral parallelogram) because we have more important things to get at than curves(oh yes, I love some) losing their way in outer space and in that suspension of belief and gravity that is the favourite playing field of those nice and orderly minds in the finest traditions of that shaggy Einstein or bent Hawkins...or is it tilted?...tch, cth...and become straight (in case I have lost you-- curves becoming straight -- and no am not rubbing it in --- not this anyway)... for starter I would suggest a title: Dichotomy (in the astronomical sense; god forbid if I imply any other sense...the ugly one can be quite cute sometimes.... or have I mixed them up?).. for you see I have this aversion to untitled thoughts .....like well...... you get my drift .. yes, sir you do.....and then you say ‘I knew calculus once…’ and pray sir, do you realise you are exposing your broadside....honest, no pun...I mean we can open a whole wide gambit of... I knew this guy once.... I knew that girl once.... you get me drift?....and no I would not even broach how we differentiate in sleep...has landed me in trouble enough times already independently of your efforts, so thanking you we move along..... and integrate?....yaar, you have had it.... did you have it? ...it?....am I sober.... will I be sober?.... reawakening?... as in the effects receding .. as in...shame on you for making the sawdust the desert plant chewed for nourishment ....you wince ... hear that .... you wince... the ugly one will chuckle or the chuckly one will uggle.. and tomorrow I will be sober....but still a mcp....oh. fate!

A good line from Casablanca:

....``Hey Reeek you must be thinking that I am a real lowlife``.

(may not be exact quote)

Rick(deadpan):``I would.If I gave it a thought``.

or

---(broom in hand)--``O Georgiay!yeh loag kyaa mangthaa haaayaay?``

(Muslim league procession.Slogans`` lay kay rahaingay Pakistan`` marches through)

...``O Stephanay!Yeh loag azaadee mangtaa haaayay.HUM naheen daitha!``

Being the one having more exposure to mathematics than poetry I think you have used the mathematical ``metaphors/similies`` very nicely (and probably very fist time). May I suggest that you write a short post explaining the terms like integration, differentiation, and calculus etc.

Yes, I know it sounds ridiculous; it is like explaining your joke to your audience who didnt get it the first time.

I liked it. Thank you.

Arif:

Quite nice. Autobiographical?

Or merely descriptive.

Cray ball love, rebounding from surfaces...

nice.

Another worthy effort. Not as good as your ``Taxicab Hiccups`` but symbolic enough to deserve a title.

temporal... actually, the poem is called ``Angles of the Intersection.`` I share your distaste for untitled thoughts. I`d just scribbled this down on a piece of paper, and it was sent off before I could come up with the title. :) I`m not going to say who sent it off :).

Karim... Yes, it`s quite autobiographical and the journey itself is quite exhilirating.

Urstruly and everyone else... thanks :)

arif

p.s. so when we do get into a discussion of pakistani mathematicians v. indian math wizards? :)

What the ...., Arif!!!

Poetry for the Mathematicians???

What good is it if it`s accessible only to a few esotric brains??

hmmm.. no trouble in Paradise I hope? Known to produce works of art such as this ;-0

Did E.L. Doctrow`s ``Come with me, compute with me`` inspire you?

i wondered why the phrase `the geometry of love` sounded to familiar until i remembered that calligraphy is called `the geometry of line`, implying that the proportion of the letters (including all the curved strokes) are governed by mathematical proportions. love is a curving word. i suppsoe it has its very own rules too. its a pity you couldnt learn them before you attempted to draw those lines, infinite as they sometimes seem to be. you cant learn the rules by breaking them, you just find newer, more innovative ways of breaking them again and again. and then are you any better than any other repeat offender? i dont know, but its still a haunting line, a huanting thought.

I have to say that i can`t help but agree with Urstruly :)and here i was thinking that only song writers in the pakistani film industry could come up with terms like geometry of love not to mention Reema and Shan dancing madly to the tune .

Dear Sir,
I read your poem. It is indeed very good. I am sorry that I read it in a hurry. But I will come back again to read more.
