Scout#34,

``ARe you being sarcastic or what? This Great Society was dumb enough to be overtaken by the British and partitioned into bits and pieces. There`s nothing high and mighty about that``

scout, tahmed was being ironic and sarcastic. No disrespect, but you fly off the handle too easily, your post was hilarious! How could you take his post at face value?

God bless you though scout, you have fire in your belly at least.

when I have more time I would like to respond to you with regards to the paucity of originality in Indian art (especially with regard to the novel in English... that is one area in which desi culture is original and distinctive.....)

regards

Harpreet

Karim Shankar,

I am not surprised. You come across as a very liberated person. More power to you and your friends!

... for once young scout, of biblical fame, is right – this vile and cowardly attack on our gastronomical honor and haute cuisine cannot be treated flippantly .......

this is absolutely the last straw .....first the hinge-using idlee-eating hindoos humiliated us by gobbling junagadh and hyderabad; then the dossa-loving scoundrels, in cahoots with the despicable bania-lover mountbatten , stole kashmir - while nehru was stealing edwina; next the bhaji brigade separated us from our fish eating brothers and now .......now they have the gall, the guts and the gonads to claim that they have better food in that hell-hole on the wrong side of the border ......this is yet another horrible, malicious and pernicious little lie designed to demoralize and belittle us ..... laholaywalakuwat !.....if their food is so damnn good why did gandhi-ji resort to regular enemas and take along a goat and a niece to milk it ? ......and if you guys knew how to make a decent lassi, or kashmiri chai , poor old morarji desai wouldn’t have had to subsist on recycled body fluids ! ......oh, I know some of you are going to say that that is a low blow, but this ultimate insult deserves the wrath and fury of a wronged momin and pakistani ....... next thing you know the dastardly indians will be claiming that the courtesans of some no-name bazaar in delhi are more beautiful than the nightingales of lahore’s heera-mandi - raised and bred on Phaja’s world-famous paye ........

.......and yes ,phaja who sits at the crossroads to the bazaar where the sub-continent’s most beautiful women practice their trade, has the best paye in the world ......it is a work of art ......the paye, singed not skinned, are still intact as they are dumped into the gelatin rich shorba that will set a vegetarian clutching at his dhoti.......never have I seen a paya emerge so intact, yet so tender, after being cooked for twenty or more hours – a true miracle ! .....the sho of tibbi thana who, in those days, paid two lakh rupees for a one year stint, the business men from liberty market, the landlords from toba tek singh and the lowly students from uet all agreed with bashira the pimp as he twirled the garland of sweet smelling motia wrapped around a limp wrist and said, “ these paye are the food of angles “ .......let no man disagree !

........and let’s not even talk about nihari , unless it is about haji waris shah’s ( RUA) nihairi from undroon bhati gate ........flakes of beef and marrow floating in pure desi ghee that can clog the arteries while still not past the throat …… drivers and other minions representing supreme court judges, construction thekaydars, LDA directors and other scum that inhabit the ante-rooms of the gymkhana wait for hours to get a plate of the heavenly nectar for their masters.....

......and what about the fish from mozang chungi and the kat-a-kat and shahi murgh cholay from abbot road ........they tell me that now lahore has a place called “food street” where you can sit and order manna from any of the hundred places in and around laxmi chowk and abbot road …......i wonder if that little ras malai place at the end of beaton road is still there ? ......there was a time when you could buy a fifth of that horrible fire-water, vat-1, through a little window, set in the middle of a big door, in the middle of the night, and have a feast fit for a king with the best karahi ghost and chcken tikkas right there on abbot road ........

........and let no infidel ever mention the word tikka or karahi ghost in our presence ......no one, not even the taliban, can make a lamb karahi like that made in the bazars of landikotal – lamb and lard with a pich of pepper , a little salt and nothing else .......tikka ? what is a tikka ? it is a skewer with one boti of mariated lamb followed by one piece of fat cooked in namak-mandi peshawar which might be the dirtiest place on earth but still has the best sparrows and batairs........yes sparrows, cooked slowly in a daig, or battered and deep fried, or marinated and grilled on a charcoal fire ......oh sure, gujranwala has sparrows too, but peshawar is the place for this delicacy .......

.......and what is chicken saji ? .......it seems to me that, at least in pindi and islamabad, it has supplanted the ubiquitous chicken tikka as the bird of choice to be consumed with bootlegged liquor ........a whole bird marinated and then slowly ,very slowly, cooked over an open charcoal .....and pindi is not the gastronomical wasteland that it used to be .......apart from the silly italian pizzerias and pretentious bistros there is a lot of real food to be found – food that even a lahori will have an hard time finding fault with ....... who has the best handi saag or handi daal ? usmania, lasania or jehangir ? - I vote for sogo 2000 in blue area ........

And no self respecting pakistani will ever touch spinach-paneer or vegetable thali or idlee or dossa with a ten foot pole ......nd don’t tell me a dossa, a glorified rice cake, with something called sambar is real food ......oh, and coconut is a fruit – it is not a vegetable to be put in curry and salan – it is something you use in deserts ......and what is that red paste those darn hyderabadis always insist of serving – is it a relish? is it a desert ? .......and what the heck is this horrible bikharay baigan stuff – tastes like something gone bad ......the only thing more disgusting than hyderabadi food is watching a hyderabadi eat it.......even the most uncouth of our tribal afridi and shinwari brothers have better table manners ..... no one balls the rice and gravy in their fist before plopping it in their mouth and licking the palm all the way from the wrist to the tip of the fingers ......disgusting! Stop it !

.....as for the most beautiful courtesans – that can be the subject of another discussion......

P.S. after watching an episode of ``kaun banega crore-pati``, i can say with great confidence that the gulf between us and dar-ul-harb is widenening .....i could not understand half - okay, forty percent - of the words that that white-bearded wonder with a raven-black head of hair was using ........ what the heck is all that hindi crap ? what happened to language that decent folk could understand....... simply horrible !..... is this part of some rss inspired conspiracy hatched at the kumbh-mela to kill the urdu language ?

Alil #19:

It probably comes as a surprise to you, pal, but almost all of my friends ( the majority being Hindus) have gone to Karim`s next to Jama Masjid and / or Nizamuddin. and no, they aren`t relatives of mine - hard luck :( . And yes, it`s one of the best places to eat on the planet - since i`ve lived for too long in the wasteland of South Delhi, I kinda know what Veeresh is talking about.

Unfortunately, what with Delhi being smack dab in the middle of the cow belt, I dont think it`s easy to get nihari and / or haleem there - however, in more civilised places like Calcutta, Bangalore and Hyderabad, it`s still available.

anNy # 26 : when are you writing again?

tahmed #38,

You should know better than to joke around about such serious issues. Our countries are going to the dumps, and all you can do is joke about it?

You should be ashamed of yourself and to call yourself a Pakistani. Don`t try to emulate others interactors and lose your individuality.

Your individuality is your originality.

Your copy of hamidm`s sarcastic interactions is testament to the point I`m belaboring: the lack of originality of desi people! Please think before you post such messages again.

Maybe you will now realize the stupidity of your post.

scout #34 the only part of your post where you got it right was when you wrote ``You can`t be serious?!?``

Of course I was not being serious. That was a joke, for crying out loud. The whole post I wrote was a joke. God!!!!

Veeresh,
I don`t know the significance of your flight being on time but this is the SECOND time on CHOWK that I`ve become very hungry during the reading of your articles.
I still want to challenge you to visit Burns Road in Karachi (If Sabri and Malik are still around with their Nihari) or the Old Sections of Lahore which possibly have the best Mughlai cuisine in the world (along with nearby entertainment).
Anyway, any writer that can be as deliciously descriptive with food is alright with me. And
next time if you Indians want to discuss Kashmir
over a meal with any of the many dishes that Veeresh has mentioned here, I`d like to join in.
Anyone out there want to give me their best
location for ``Khata Khat`` in Karachi? Maybe Veeresh could be filled in on how good it is...

Ras

PS: ``uske baad dikhayenge in Angrez aur Americans ko, ek saath``. Blood of my brother, I think``
You better believe it!

shankar #33,

Despite the examples you provided, the balance of originality clearly lies in favor of the West.

Have you seen the kinds of independent films made by students in theater schools here? I suggest you do.

Don`t tell me the greatest movies every made in Hollywood were copies as the ones in Bollywood are?

And Pakistani movies are the worst, they copy the copied Bollywood ones.

It`s sickening.

tahmed321, #32, `` please stop complaining about the lack of originality in India and Pakistan.``

Please don`t stop me from complaining about it, cause we both know it exists. Who are you trying to fool?

``Where do you think the name Hollywood came

from?``

Who cares where a name came from. My parents gave me a name that came from the Bible. So what?

I`m talkign about arts and entertainment here, whole ideas and concepts blatantly copied.

``Do you know that the defense establishments the world over would give their right arm to learn about the scientific and technical breakthroughs that made it possible.``

Do you honestly think building a nuclear bomb while half the country starves is a huge accomplishment? Don`t get me started on that.

``Also, how about the breakthroughs made by Pakistan in building a progressive society?``

I hope you don`t mean the installation of MTV Asia into the homes of middle class Pakis in Karachi?

Oh yeah, that`s really progressive. While I`m sure many Pakistanis are progressing, we still have a longggggggggggggggggg way to go. Our progression is leaning more towards cultural prostitution than technological/social/economic advances.

``Wait till the movie makers in the west learn how to make the classy soaps that Bollywood and Lollywood are famous for.``

You can`t be serious?!? I would agree with you on some Pakistani dramas, but trust me, even All My Children is better than what Bollywood produces.

``I bet there are a number of political scientists in the US who would love to have originated the deep philosophy underlying the Great Society we have come up with.``

I can`t believe you just said that. ARe you being sarcastic or what? This Great Society was dumb enough to be overtaken by the British and partitioned into bits and pieces. There`s nothing high and mighty about that. This Great Society that you talk about has innocents dying in Kashmir, not to mention the ones dying of starvation and bad living conditions.

We don`t have much to be proud of, no matter how hard that fact is to digest. And some of us think copying the West`s bad habits makes them more ``modern and chic.`` Desis are terribly stupid.

scout #31 please stop complaining about the lack of originality in India and Pakistan. Where do you think the name Hollywood came from? I bet you dont know that illegal immigrants from California wrote home about the magical kingdom of Bollywood, thus giving ideas to US movie makers ideas on what to call their movie making center. And where did Bollywood come from - from Lollywood in the cultural center of the world in Pakistan. Wait till the movie makers in the west learn how to make the classy soaps that Bollywood and Lollywood are famous for. While I am on the subject - what about the nuclear bomb that makes India a Great Power? Do you know that the defense establishments the world over would give their right arm to learn about the scientific and technical breakthroughs that made it possible. Also, how about the breakthroughs made by Pakistan in building a progressive society? I bet there are a number of political scientists in the US who would love to have originated the deep philosophy underlying the Great Society we have come up with.

I hope you have by now realized the foolishness that led you to make your earlier posts!!

scout,

Not to belabor the point, Americans are not that original either. ``Who wants to be a millionaire?`` is an adaptation of a British show. Famous sitcoms like ``Three`s Company`` & ``All in the family``, not to mention the ``reality tv`` craze are all foreign shows that are adapted to the US audience.

alrite alrite, didn`t know you guys were so touchy about that tv show....

i still have a problem with the lack of originality in south asian entertainment.. that includes India and PAkistan...

one doesn`t even need a big budget to be original... if there is one thing we can learn from the West (among many others) is the utter sheer creativity and originality of most of their work...

Veeresh: This must be a new writing style in English that I am obviously not aware of. Your grammar is interesting as you do not follow the usual order of putting subject, object and verb. As a result, it is quite a bit of work to fully fathom what you intended to convey. Is it me only or somebody else in Chowk is also at a loss with this piece? I better read some contemporary literary work!

Kaun Banega Crorepati is a licensed adaptation of ``Who wants to be a millioniare?``. Nobody is claiming its original - its just something that people enjoy - original or adapted is just the vanity of snobs.
