This is very elegantly written, I love it!

You want to contribute to Pakistani society? Write more, please! :)

Re : Waheed

``Jeez, Asim, lighten up. Aren`t you giving me YOUR version of right and wrong. There is nothing wrong with 16 year old female virgins sticking their fingers for it in a place full of 35 year old sexual retard Men who don`t know the A.B.C of sex.``

Dear Waheed,

Its great to hear from you.

Mian you seem very charged(no pun intended). :)

Okay hear me out. Mahir`s aspiration in her earlier article, which happened to be in Spanish(not French, Non e bella lingua italiana, not saraiki) hovered optimistically around trying to contribute to Pakistan society. ...``trying to define a way to contribute to Pakistani society and by this poem am shaking hands with Chowk and all its readers, who will learn to hate me in the coming months.``

Now, I had made some ``reservation: about her earlier work, in relation to the heroic aspiratiosn as per above;i.e. contrary to her belief by writing in spanish, she is never going to fulfil her objective of reaching out the masses and contributing. Despite the ``foreign`` language the last poem had some merit, contrary to the current debacle.

Its a bit like our national poet Mr Iqbal; He disparaged and was disdainful of the use of urdu vis-a-vis the sublime ``Farsi`` as a suitablke medium. He seemed rto be under the impression that the sophistry of the country could appreciate the farsi better as oppsoed to the ``pedestrian`` urdu during his metaphysical exploration days;thereby indicating his full passion for two petty snobbishness and class consciousness. Later when he turned ``socialist``(and i have no idea how and why did he have to let go of his ingrained superiority complexes), he became a people`s poet.

Frankly, I fail to see any semblance of literature in this poem. I know Oscar Wilde, and DH Lawrence both indulged in the ``intimate`` scenarios, and why is it their rendition of such themes was much more poignant, graceful, and potent, as compare to the current dabblings of our friend. Not to mention the fact that the poem appears to have been ``abridged``, thereby taking away its potency, if it had some.

My comments about 16 yr old virgins were written in jest, more like a satire on current 16 yr old female ``virgins``(now that is hopeful thinking alright), in the glorious Islamic Republic of Pakistan. I am all for sexual experimentation. Its just i dont think an average reader is interested in my findings from my adolescent days, or for that matter yours. On the contrary I strongly believe that these 16 yr old Pakkistani virgins could perhaps give ideas to our erstwhile noble writer I take it, you and others are clear on where i was coming(no pun intnded yet once more) from.

Read up Farzana Varsey`s treatise on sex and religion. She has my complete support for breaking hell loose here with her salacious insights. Now there is a lady who is unbridled, who is passionate, yet not restrained, and who knows how to maintain a stand and argue for it, and who knows the importance of sex and religion to entwine the two, without any reservations. She comes all the way unlike halfway, half hearted, withing realms of acceptance Mahim.

Break all rules!

Sincerely,

Asim

Re: Jawahara

``Asim, why is it so hard to digest that 16 year old virgins are *gasp * sexual creatures too? It`s a fact of life. Or is that only reserved for 16 year old (and up) guys who can leer at, touch and violate others. Better self gratification than molestation or even actually having sex at that age.``

Hi Jawahara,

Perhaps i should have put a large smiley next to my observations about the corruption potential of 16 yr old virgins from the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.

You are absoluetley right. That is not to say that these ``creatures`` dont already do all that and more.

Sincerely,

Asim

P.S My friend, a female doctor, told us how one such girl from Kinnaird College (naturally), broke a bottle of coca cola inside of her and had to be brought to the emergency in a Lahore hospital, where the shards of the bottle had to be painstakingly removed.

oh glorious leader farangicushion...

please unveil yourself in all your 2`` glory so we insults to female chromosomes can prostrate ourselves at your feet and beg to be taken into your harem like the doormats we are. we all apologise, together, again and again, for having offended your delicate sensibilites and beg to be taken in and reprimanded in a suitably sadistic fashion. in desperate need of some discipline..

shandana (i have seen the light at the end of the tunnel, and i now know it is the tubelight in f-k`s rectum) minhas

Urstruly #16,

Whoaaaaaaa, easy there buddy.

#13 was a JOKE not a fantasy

However, the description of your ``blubber`` invokes

fantasies of halal jello, vanilla pudding, and twinkies....

Human fat looks like a deep yellow vanilla pudding anyway, let me know the date of your liposuction surgery, I`ll be there with a straw and napkins.

yummm

There just was not enough to this poem to actually analyze it or dissect it in any meaningful way.

Hello fellow Chowkies,

1.This is my second submission, not my third.

2.It is a complete poem, not abridged.

3.Channel 40 is scrambled porn on Canadian Cable.

4.Everybody wanks off, including girls.

5.Men have come into Jinnah Hospital with coke bottles broken up their rectum.

6.Sex in this society is girted round with taboo.

7.This poem in no way encourages sex, it is about

masturbation.

8.Not all poetry is about Jihad.

9.This poem was shortlisted for the Irving Layton Creative Writing in Poetry Award in March 2000 at a Canadian University. And it has been read at various venues to open audiences there, which included plenty of Muslims/Pakistanis.

Thank you for all your interactions, your comments are helpful, even the scathing ones. I joined chowk for the interaction.

Thankyou to the chowk staff.

Love Mahim.

[...Fahmeeda Riaz is an insult to female chromosomes, let alone urdu poetry...]

A poet bares his/her soul. They may those immediately around them, or the world at large with their words. Whether the poet is effective or not, good or bad is decided subjectively by the reader. The objective test is Mother Time. The great ones live forever and the rest are thrown in the landfill of history. Based on this the jury is still out on Fehmida.

Your words are demeaning to yourself. Please reconsider.

Asim Hayat #18:

[...Okay hear me out....]

Yes, I will if you do the same:)

How do you know Mahim does not spend every single hour available after work in a leper’s colony there? Or volunteering at some local hospital at the expense of social life women her age have? Or donates a substantial portion of her salary to Edhi?

Easy, yaar, don’t be in a hurry to be so judgmental.

For me this is a tongue in cheek rendition of basic human instincts. My friend Saqi has coined a word for it in Urdu ---’khood-was’ali’.
We can interpret this one of two ways.

This may be a minor poem, indulgent and indulging. The reader is led to share a moment -- that moment of self-awareness and release with the poet.

On another level (with some minor re-write and am being subjective here) this can be very introspective and thoughtful. What makes men poets get away with carte blanche. And why do we impose a different morality on women poets? What is it that we (desi males) take unusual and sometimes logic defying stance on discrimination?

Us vs. them. India vs. Pakistan. My Islam vs. your Islam. My Allah vs. your Allah. Desis vs. the West. Sindh vs. Punjab. Deobandis vs. Barelvis. Ahle-this vs. Ahle-that.

And finally men vs. women? Is that male chauvinism or is it in our desi genes to always think of them from the lower extremities?

regards,

temporal
PS: What say you now, B?

Mahim # 27

I object to your point # 8. Are you implying that there are two catagories of poetry, Jihadic and indecent. You be careful here at Chowk. Dont get sucked up by the rantings of:

-Quadianis
-Christians
-Hindus
-Pseudo-Liberals and
-Gays

Be yourself. You dont need to prove anything to anyone to show that you are one of the gang-unless this is your original agenda.
